Character development

Remember that he has to be a loser

Novus Main takes mages that other Covenants do not want.

Edit to clarify his flaws. Snakes added in and his favors explained further. slight change in Arts.

Bernhard started with his name and his master liked the sound of it, so he ended his gauntlet with it also. He was born somewhere in the Normandy tribunal, the exact location is unrecorded and not remembered by the Magus. His parents were travelling to a new home near ??? when a group of bandits attacked killing all the travellers, leaving only the child Bernhard alive. He too would have perished, but for a Jerbiton Magus from a local Covenant stumbling upon the unfortunate waif.
The budding Gift was evident. And so the Mage removed the 6 year old boy from the presense of his dead parents and from the attentions of a mundane snake that had roamed into the area. The death of his parents and his feelings toward snakes are intimitately linked to this day. Two years later, and various exchanges of favors lead the boy, now eight years old to his final destination, House Bonisagus. His extreme intelligence and communicative skills became evident at the very beginning of his tutelage. He was the envy of many a Magi. As he grew in stature and knowledge of the arcane, his inquisitive nature lead him to the study of Intelligo and a fairly diverse repertoire of forms, though nothing surpassing his talent for Intelligo.
He devoured as much knowledge about magical phenomena as possible. Becoming an avid student of such happenings.
After his gauntlet he was determined to not live out his existance in a safe established place, rather wishing to push out to the outskirts of 'civilized' mage areas. He ended up picking the his original home tribunal of Normandy mainly as a whim, and after a little research(very little if the truth be told) and some drunken conversations with a certain Tytalus he settled on the covenant of Novus Mane as his destination. The Tytalus was named Reginald and a member of the Cabal of the Lance. Favors were exchanged and he set out to discovered the mysteries of the Magical world.

OOC: I think he is pretty rounded and I want him to be a good writer. He is very interested in solving mysteries, big or small.

Quick Question who or what are the Knights of the Thorn and why do you owe them a favour?

Sounds cool, I like the concept . More so, this is just the kind of asset we lack  He would surely be welcome to Novus Mane, as our library is lacking, to say the least

A question at a glance, though (no book or else before me): Are you sure he can learn "peering into the mortal mind"? I seem to recall you need In (10) + Me (6) + Int (5) + MT (4) + Aura (3) of 30 or 31, while it is only 28. What am I missing?

I will substitute 'Cabal of the Lance', as that was what I was trying to remember when I wrote that. I should lay off the alcohol. I think Knights of the Thorn is a old M:TG card. :stuck_out_tongue:  I was intending this as another reason why he would be heading to a covenant of Novus Mane's newness. He basically owes a favor to a member of the cabal and they sent him to Novus Mane to be of aid to the Magi there. I thought it made sense. From my reading to the adventures at Novus Mane, you met a Tytalus from the Cabal. It sounded like something he might arrange. I am willing to change this if necessary.

Ok, I am rusty but after consulting ArM5 pg.48 for Puissant MT(bonisagus) and pg. 29 for the character spell selection on detailed char creation, it is

In(10) + Me(6) + Int(5) + MT(4+2 for puissant=6) + 3(don't think this is aura, bonus to the total YMMV) or 30. I'm probably gonna be taking a fatigue everytime I cast it, especially out of an aura. I think I may shift some more toward Me. I have editted the above character submission. clarified some backstory in regard to his flaws.

IIRC, aura 3 is the standard for character creation (the famous "average aura"), that's why I used it. Once in your covenant, of course, you use your covenant's aura

That makes perfect sense. I stand corrected.

If your character is nearly ready to go , then I would like to introduce him in the story before I push events on and make it difficult for new characters to join in

I think I'm pretty much ready. I was kinda in a holding pattern, wasn't sure what to do next. I probably still have a few holes in his background, but I can fill in stuff as the need presents itself. Thanks again for including me. I'm rare'in to go.

Just added your arrival at the covenant

Once you are ready put the character sheet in the right forum.

Added it to the wiki, too

Since I'm not sure exactly what degree of "undesirable" I should be, here are some ideas on why Viscaria Lynchis would be a cast-off:

  • As a fae-blooded magi, Viscaria longs to learn Faerie Magic, and somehow became politically inconvenient due to her pursuit of that goal.
  • Infamous Master, which gives her a negative reputation (which she will probably live up to)
  • Her familiar is a female Giant Trap Door Spider of Virtue, or some such, and the covenant she comes from doesn't want her to spawn any children in their covenant
  • Her previous covenant was threatened/nearly destroyed due to her lab experiments
  • She is accompanied by a small village's worth of gypsy midgets (dwarf-blooded outsiders), a few of whom count as her forge companions (the rest are just flavor to add to the covenfolk description and have no mechanical advantage). In the previous covenant, these gypsies effectively constituted the Divided Loyalty Hook, and were eventually exiled.
  • Some or all of the above

Here are the V/Fs she has:

Virtues
The Gift, Hermetic Magus. Verditus Magic (Casting Tools - carved stones)
Strong Fae Blood - Dwarf +3
Imbued With Spirit of Terram +1
Affinity with Craft/Silver, Terram +1 +1
Pussiant Terram +1
Inventive Genius +1,

  • Hermetic Alchemy, +1
  • Minor Philosophic Alchemy +1

Flaws
Dwarf, general-3 (Size -2, Str -1, Sta -1)
Magical Animal Companion, story -1 (Giant Trap Door Spider, Size -3, Might 13) (to be a familiar later)
Faerie Upbringing, personality-1
Infamous Master, hermetic -1
Difficult Longevity Ritual, hermetic -3
Spontaneous Casting Tools, hermetic -1

Notes on VFs
Judging by the wiki, you guys have been in play for about 7 years in game. Assuming I get to create a character with 5+ post-Gauntlet years, I'd really like her to pick up Major Philosophic Alchemy and possibly even Numerology and Geometry by then. Depending on how many mysteries I can take post-gauntlet, there are some other virtues I'd like to start with instead (Free Expression and either Elder Guild Trained or Skilled Parens).

Depending on what flavor of undesirable we're looking for, some of the Flaws may need to be adjusted.

I was planning on having her pick up Prone to Chance in exchange for a Mystery, which is the flaw that means you always experiment. Problem is, Alchemy can't happen in a lab where you experiment. Can she have a second lab where she does the Alchemical Vis Extractions? It isn't clear to me from the rules if that is even kosher.

Proposed concept for my Bonisagus longevity experimentalist:

It's always been the nature of Bonisagus magi to experiment, to attempt to push the bounds of the possible. Unfortunately, some magi take things a little too far. Marcus' pater, Alphaeus was one such magus. Obsessed with aging, he reasoned that the youthful might hold the key to reversing it, and carried out a number of experiments on his young apprentice. These yielded little fruit, and much harm - by the time Marcus was gauntleted, he had already been thrust into twilight twice, and emerged permanently scarred by it each time, leading to an abiding fear of warping in addition to the direct magical effects.

Gauntleted, many magi's response would have been to eschew experimentation for ever, but not so Marcus. He would experiment, but he would do it better than his pater. No such stupid mistakes as Alphaeus had made; he was good, and would be careful, and nothing would go wrong. Inflicted by both accelerated aging and a susceptibility to twilight by his pater's bungling, he hit upon a plan that would help him against both - he would invent a method of creating a longevity that didn't warp its recipients, by enchanting it into the familiar bond.

Proposed Virtues:
Hermetic Magus (fSS) 0
Puissant Magic Theory (mG) (House virtue) 0
Affinity with Magic Theory (mG) 1
Cautious with Magic Theory (mG) 1
Cautious Sorceror (mH) 1
Affinity with Corpus (mH) 1
Puissant Corpus (mH) 1
Minor Magic Focus: Aging (mH) 1
Inventive Genius (mH) 1
Self-confident (mG) 1
Personal vis source: Corpus (mH) 1

Proposed Flaws:

Age Quickly (MS) 3
Twilight Prone (MH) 3
Driven: his research (mP) 1
Overconfident (mP) 1
Infamous Master (mH) 1

Currently room for one more virtue and flaw. I'm considering swapping out Self-confident and Personal vis source for Flawless magic.

The virtues offset the flaws to an extent. This isn't intended to be an exercise in munchkinism, but rather part of the character. He's trying to overcome his problems, and he thinks that he's succeeding; however, the virtues only partially offset the flaws, and every now and again, things are going to go wrong.

Ideas for suitable projects for his research include longevity rituals, the bronze cord, and enchanting appropriate effects into the familiar cord (probably things like bonuses to wound/disease recovery rolls). The character was largely inspired by the line in the book "A magus would have to be insane to enchant his familiar by experimentation, as a mistake in any season of binding or instilling powers could taint the deepest bond he has. Still, some magi are insane."

I'd like to advance him a little bit past gauntlet; in particular, I'd like to have him pick up a familiar. Not fully sure what animal yet - it needs to be Creo Corpus suitable, but also prepared to have him experiment on their familiar bond. I'm considering a Weasel of Virtue, but other suggestions would be welcome.

I don't see any problems there. Most of the magi of the covenant are a few years out of apprenticeship now so 3 or 4 years should not be a problem. Looking at creatures with links to aging I could only find the Elephant and the Eagle, there may be some problems with an Elephant Familiar

Weasels are really more medicinal than aging. The other aging related familiar I could think of was a tortoise (see Aurulentus' familiar in Magi of Hermes), but I just couldn't quite reconcile tortoise and "mad experimenter" in my head.

I weasel does not really seem right but I cannot think of anything else

Questions:
How much vis does the personal vis source give? My understanding is that the covenant has 25 pawns of seisin vis, so is three pawns a year reasonable?
What are the rules and source qualities for post gauntlet advancement?

Quick Answer my personal vis source gives 4 pawns a year

I'll use standard chararacter advancement for three years.

Year one:

20 xp Concentration -> 4.
9xp Creo -> 9
1xp Parma Magica -> 1 (1)

Year 2
One season spent finding his familiar
One season spent experimenting binding his familiar.
One season spent experimenting instilling Purification of the Festuring Wounds into the familiar bond
One season spent experimenting to stabilise his discovery

Year 3
One season spent experimenting on a longevity ritual for one of his covenant mates (had been intended to be the previous year, but Marcus put it off whilst attempting to stabilise his research).
One season spent experimenting to stabilise his discovery.
9xp Perdo -> Perdo 4.
1xp Parma Magica -> 1 (2)

Results of experiments:

Binding his familiar

Using a +2 risk modifier. Lab total is Cr 9 + Co 15 + MT (Corpus) 8 + Int 3 + Aura 3 + Inventive Genius 6 + simple die 1 = 45 (Simple die roll for addition to lab total for familiar bond (1d10=1)). Marcus chooses to assign the bond scores as Gold Cord 3 (30), Silver cord 1 (5), Bronze cord 1 (5).
Die roll for experimentation is Experimentation on Familiar Bond (1d10=2) +2 for risk modifier =4 for no extraordinary effect.

Instilling Purification of the Festuring Wounds into the Familiar Bond
Using a +2 risk modifier. Lab total is Cr 9 + Co 15 + MT (Corpus) 8 + Int 3 + Aura 3 + Inventive Genius 6 + arts aligned with cord 10 + simple die 5 (Simple die for addition to lab total from experimentation on Purification of the Festering Wounds (1d10=5)) = 59
Die roll for experimentation is 9 (Experimentation roll for Purification of the Festuring Wounds (1d10=9)) +2 for modifier = 11 (modified effect), which can have a -1 applied to give a discovery.

Modified effect is die 8 (Modified effect for PotFW (1d10=8)) + risk modifier +1/+2 = +9/+10: effect of experiment modified.

Power instilled is Base 5 + 1 touch + 2 sun + 3 environmental trigger + 1 two uses per day = 24. Was originally intended to give a +12 bonus to wound recovery rolls; however, has a modified effect that needs to be determined.

Attempting to Stabilise Discovery

Lab total is Cr 9 + Co 15 + MT (Corpus) 8 + Int 3 + Aura 3 + Inventive Genius 6 + arts aligned with cord 10 + simple die 2 (Simple Die to add to lab total for stabilisation of PotFW (1d10=2))
Die roll for experimentation is 8 + 2 - 1 (applying risk modifier in the same way as before) = 9, special or story event. (Attempting to Stabilise Purification of the Festering Wounds discovery (1d10 + 1=9)) So discovery is stabilised.

Warping points from the stabilisation process: Magnitude 4 effect (before uses per day and environmental trigger) - die 2 (Simple die for number of warping points to add (4 - 1d10=2)) = 2 warping points.

Check for twilight: Ease factor = Warping Score 2 + Warping Points Gained 2 + Aura 3 + die 5 = 12 (Stress roll to give ease factor of twilight avoidance (1d10=5, 1d10=9))
Avoidance roll: Sta 0 + Con 5 (avoiding twilight) + Vi 1 + die 4 + confidence point 3 = 13. Twilight avoided, subtract one confidence point. Also add an additional 2 warping points, 4 breakthrough points. (Twilight Avoidance Roll (1d10=1), Exploding die for twilight avoidance (1d10=2))

Creating Longevity Ritual for Covenant Mate
Using +2 risk modifier. Lab total Cr 15 + Corpus 9 + Focus 9 + MT 8 (corpus) + Int 3 + Aura 3 + Inventive Genius 6 + die 1 = 54. (Simple die to add to lab total for longevity ritual (1d10=1))
Die roll for experimentation: 8 +2 (discovery) (Experimentation roll for Covenant mate's longevity ritual (1d10=8)). No need to adjust further. Marcus' covenant mate isn't best happy with his insistence that he needs to spend another season experimenting on him to stabilise the discovery.

Stabilising Longevity Breakthrough
Using +2 risk modifier. Lab total Cr 15 + Corpus 9 + Focus 9 + MT 8 (corpus) + Int 3 + Aura 3 + Inventive Genius 6 + die 1 = 54. (Simple die to add to longevity ritual (stabilisation season) (1d10=1)) An 11th magnitude ritual.
Die roll for experimentation: 7 + 2 +0 =9, discovery successfuly stabilised. Special or story event.
Warping points gained: 11 (effect magnitude) -4 = 7
Ease factor for twilight avoidance: Warping Score 2 + Warping Points Gained 7 + Aura 3 + die 6 = 18 (Stress dice for ease factor for twilight avoidance i.r.o. longevity discovery (1d10=6, 1d10=8))
Twilight avoidance roll: Sta 0 + Con 5 (avoiding twilight) + Vi 1 + die 12 = 18. Marcus gets very lucky. (Twilight avoidance roll i.r.o lr discovery (1d10=1), Exploding die for Twilight avoidance for lr (1d10=6))
Add 7 warping points, 11 breakthrough points.

End results of experimentation: +9 warping points, +15 breakthrough points, 45 Bonisagus House Acclaim points (3 per magnitude, magnitude 4 familiar enchantment, magnitude 11 longevity ritual.)
Total Bonisagus House Acclaim: 45 from experimentation, + Magnitude of Familiar's might, capped at 2 for time to spread (as only gained in second year).
Total warping points gained: 15 (9 + 2/year).

His initial experiments went surprisingly well; however, bad feeling developed between him and one of his seniors in the covenant when he first put off creating a longevity ritual for him whilst he finished his research, and then insisted on spending a second season experimenting on him. His sodalis agreed, barely, but Marcus soon found is desirable to find a more congenial covenant, a place with a fairly wide definition. Unfortunately, his master's reputation meant that very few would have him, and he found himself writing to Novus Mane.

Research Progress - 15 breakthrough points
Successfully instilled a variant on Purification of the Festering Wound into his familiar bond to produce a discovery.
Sucessfully experimented on a covenant mate's longevity ritual to create a discovery.

Questions and Comments:

  • He was more successful than I'd expected in his experimentation.
  • Does creating longevity rituals for different people count as a different experiment for the purposes of discoveries? I.e. is there any point in him continuing to experiment on them now?
  • Am I treating the risk modifer for experimenting correctly? My current understanding is that the roll on the extraordinary results chart when experimenting is stress die + risk modifier +- up to risk modifier, based on the example on page 27. This doesn't seem to be be consistent with the example on page 30, however, unless the "rolled" result already includes the modifier (which wouldn't fit with the stabilisation example). It doesn't actually affect his number of discoveries either way.
  • What's the modified effect for Purification of the Festering Wounds?
