Character Development

The Tremere companion would work very well. Though I should warn you, Tremere in this saga is based on Paul Briscoe's supplement "De Domo Tremeris" which is a 500ish page PDF. You'd have to go through the PDF if you want to play a Tremere

A Venditor would be fine, and I'm sure callen would appreciate one, but the character could not be from Ungulus because that covenant has no Verdi. The Verditii of Stonehenge are:

  • Cuprincus of Duos Flumen (Rhodri's pater)
  • Fabricor filius Desiderius, of Libellas
  • Aurelia of Nigrasaxa
  • Junius of Semitae
  • Desiderius of Voluntas
No PCs should hail from Nigrasaxa or Voluntas, but any of the other covenants would be fine. Though the dragon hunter aspect wouldn't really work... the dragons of Stonehenge (and their hunters) are all accounted for

I'd probably go with the Venditor rather than read a 500 page pdf. Regarding Ungulus, does the covenant still exist? It had (possibly past tense) a line of Verditius that produced all the items it allegedly has. I presumed with the character concept that there may have been a Veriditius left, or that magus had recently perished, left, or gone into Final Twilight. Is that a possibility? The concept I made had to do with the reports of the dragon that supposedly plagues Ungulus. If the Verditians and/or Dragon have been gone for awhile then I'd have to retool the idea for the companion (when you mention that dragons/hunters are accounted for, he couldn't be one of them?). Maybe his leaving the previous Verditian has to do with a Vendetta?

Ungulus does not have a line of Verditius in this saga, nor have they had any problems with dragons.

That settles that. I'll work on the Venditor concept still, does the vendetta idea have appeal?

I have a new Companion idea, but his Story Major Flaw, the way I have it worked out now, could easily (if not done right) overpower the game's balance/attention to him, and need some help tweaking it.

Basic Concept - "Two" trick pony Bow Master (well, for his age) Teacher. Currently searching Covenants for a magus who can cast a powerful Longevity Ritual for his Supernaturally Aging True Love wife. Knows about the Order of Hermes and magi's powers due to being a Failed Apprentice. He's a very perceptive pessimistic screw-up. She's an overly optimistic and steady possible Stablemaster.

He came into his apprenticeship late, having already started training as a Welsh bowman legionnaire and was "acquired" at 15. He met a young maid, Anwyn, who was the daughter of the houndsman. They quickly formed an everlasting bond with each other due to their stature. They had little else in common but surprisingly became inseparable and called it Fate. However, early into his apprenticeship to a Tytalus, he impetuously thought he could cast a binding ritual he had read in the library. Staking out a clear field surrounded by mushrooms, he built a bonfire on Beltane under a moonless night and tried to combine the binding ritual with a private/personal handfasting to Anwyn. He did not pay attention to the number of grevious errors he was committing (new moon, Beltane/solstice, circle of mushrooms (clearing full of mushrooms), etc). In a spectacular mistaken botch, he managed to knock himself unconscious, mystically bind himself to Anwyn, and was promptly cursed by the Faerie King of the Wood. In an effort to save his life, Anwyn bargained with the Faerie King for Kai's life, and accepted several punishments that she has never let him know about. The Faerie King strengthened the bond betwixt the two lovers, stripped Kai of his Gift so he would not commit such an error again, but left him with the side effects of the Gift and tainted him. Finally, he took Anwyn's maidenhead and empowered her to absorb what she wished from Kai to "ease his suffering".

Anwyn kissed Kai on the cheek and, in a tearful embrace, took upon herself his now broken Gift (and its effects), the taint (so she basically has the effects of the Blatant Gift without the Gift) but her inherent nature could not turn against itself so she remained Inoffensive to Animals, while Kai remained Offensive to Animals. However, in an effort to save him from any bodily harm from all this, she also managed to take in his aging and leaving his body even untouched from the harm of time and effectively doubled her own. The Faerie King felt no need to correct this mistake and sealed their bond, performed an impromptu "marriage" ceremony, and left Anwyn to comfort her unconscious new husband.

As part of their "curse", any physical pain or exhaustion felt by one is also felt by the other and both parties suffer the same penalties. Kai, however, does not know it is bi-directional. Anwyn only told him that the curse made him feel any pain she goes through, so he is not burdened with the knowledge that any wounds he takes she takes also. Having lost his Gift and no longer viable as an apprentice, Kai and Anwyn made their way out into the world for a short while. He does not understand everyone's reactions to his beautiful wife (Unaffected by the Gift) and why they keep calling her harlot, slut, thief, and other evil curses. When the Unaging/Supernatural Aging finally became apparent, they made their way back to the Order and the Covenants, selling Kai's services as a Bow Teacher for progressively powerful Longevity Rituals. Anwyn is worried and not sure if Kai will also die if she does and will sometimes privately look into ways if the link can be broken, or lessened, or turned uni-directionally, which usually gets her in more trouble that Kai must rescue her from. The last rumor said that Leona ex Bjornear had created a breakthrough in the development of her Longevity Ritual, and they have come to Galleus Florensis (sp?) to seek out the veracity of the rumor.

Notes:

  • Music uses communication and more social interaction skills use Com than Pre; how you have your characteristics is fine but from how you've described your character I just wanted to be sure that's where you want things.
  • You may be interested in Sling of Vilano. It's a lv 15 (I think) ReTe that works much like Crystal Dart, only because it requires targetting (based off of Per+Finesse) it bypasses magic resistance.

I'll switch my social stats to +1/+1 then, since it makes sense to be good at my social skills I put points in. As far as Sling of Vilano, it's something I will probably look into once I gain some skill in Rego. Despite it being rather equalized for now, I'm planning on specializing in Muto as my technique, and Auram + other elements for my Forms.

Background:

Private letter from Aurelius to Murion, Primus of House Bonisagus:

The Order of Hermes is dying.
Yes, that's right.

Few amongst us recognize it to be true; fewer still believe it can be avoided.
But consider, each passing decade sees Magic fading across the land. Vis, so abundant at the age of the founders, is dwindling year by year while encroaching humanity and the power of the Dominion are slowly eroding the strength of magical auras everywhere.

An ever widening gulf separates all of humanity from the ideal perfection which is Magic.

It might take centuries, but ultimately the art could no longer be practiced and the supreme realms of ideas, patterns and forms will become forever barred to us, spiraling all of humanity into an age of barbarity never witnessed before in the annals of history.

The petty squabbling amongst the great houses and across the tribunals will intensify as Magic continues to diminish. Now might be our last good chance to avert a disaster.
I beseech you; give me the aid that I require to further my studies. My research on magical auras will save our order and usher in a new golden age which will assure the dominance of the founder's house for centuries to come.

With humility,
Aurelius Bonisagi

Born to an affluent merchant from Cologne, David was brilliant and quick minded even as a child. His father paid for him to receive the best education possible, and so the young boy found himself in the hands of Daria la Gris – a stern Tremere Maga from the covenant of Triamore. Excelling in his studies, he soon found himself claimed by Occultes, a Bonsigus magus from Durenemar. Having demonstrated his genius numerous times during his apprenticeship, he quickly gained the respect (and enmity) of his soldas which only continued to fuel his growing arrogance.
Having completed his training, the young magus has set up to continue his studies of the art of magic (and Vim in particular) in Durenemar for several more years before setting off to find unique auras and regios which will assist him in furthering his research - a research he believes that would one day change the future of the order.

fixed. swapped creo study with terram to make sure lab total is high enough for magus sanctum. removed unbroken silence and updated unconquered lust so it can be researched in a single season as well.

honestly, couldn't think of any idea for a spell sigil for a vim specialist  will give it another go sometimes. regarding warped magic - i will like to keep the shadow gift effect. it doesn't have to be so severe if it only lasts a few minutes/hours - duration will be up to you to decide, depending on the magnitude of the spell.

Please choose something less drastic. A minor flaw should never be able to accomplish something that normally requires a third magnitude spell.

i'll just replace the flaw with stockade parma magica from true lineages.

Luminus de Libris, Veridtus enchanter of books.

Confraternity of Irene the Younger (painters and sculptors of Imaginem and Mentem effects). Luminus is deeply engaged in the technological revolution of illumination and illustration. He is a research enchanter, seeking to break the boundaries of the ability to transmit and store knowledge on paper.

Curiously, as I am away from my books, it is not clear to me yet if Luminus actually writes books. He may just illuminate them.

He is a fairly adventurous magi, with a Carouse score and conversant in The Art Of Memory, allowing him to depict the stories told to him while men are in the cups. He keeps a chapbook which he fills with journal entries and sketches of his experiences.

Questions: 1) Should he have Craft:Illumination or Craft:Painting(Illumination) ? I've already asked Arya, but the way she phrased her answer leads me to believe its open to discussion, especially since we're talking about "the new and exciting breakthroughs in illumination technology."

  1. What should his Storytelling skill be? Craft:Authoring? Craft:Stories? This is his skill at creating compelling narratives. Whether this actually aids in Source Quality is debatable, and possibly the subject of magical research.

  2. Do other players have any other fun suggestions for his development?

Excellent questions.

Serf's parma:

  1. I'd say one or the other seems logical, especially if he's going to make magical illuminations or paintings.
  2. IMO, take a "storytelling" specialties to your language skill to tell known stories of your culture. Craft: Stories would help you devise new stories, very probably helping navigate the faerie realms, but nothing else IMO... But you could very well unlock some faerie secrets and become the house expert on these matters.
  3. You may want to instead design him as a merinita bend on unlocking Folk Mysteries, especially Story Magic.

Folk Mysteries is an interesting idea. My original take on them was that the rules were broken and ineffective, but that was from a very general point of view. I'll go take a look at them now and think about how they might apply specifically to this character.

After re-reading the Folk Mysteries, I feel like my original opinion of them has been confirmed. You have to spend much more time in the lab as you add charms to spells, and for very little gain. However, now I'm thinking that playing him as a Merinita makes some sense. I wanted to give him Mythic Blood (son of Mnemosyne, mother of the muses), since I don't see that sort of thing in play very often. Would that be an acceptable virtue for the Merinita's fae-tainted requirement? I'm so used to playing a Verditus that it's hard to think outside of the lab.

Here's what I have so far:

(will be fairly standard, with emphasis on Creo, Imaginem and Mentem. Notably, he will also have The Art of Memory.)

(And once again, I wish that MetaCreator worked on a Mac)

Luminus de Libris is the son of Mnemosyne, mother of the 9 muses, and a wandering warrior-poet named Alexander. The sell-sword was struck by the view from atop a mountain, and composed a poem about it on the spot. Mnemosyne was nearby, and favored the poem so much that when he wrote it down, the words leapt from the page and turned into the treasure he had always wanted -- a son he named Vellum.

His future pater discovered the boy after hearing stories of his birth, but Alexander would not leave his son. The magus quickly offered to let the man join his covenant's turb, though some detailed discussion was had regarding the nature of an apprentice's life. However, Alexander's life as a sell-sword had been much harder on him that the life his son was to endure as an apprentice, and in the end, he thought the bargain was a good one.

As they traveled to their new home, the covenant of ______, Vellum had his first encounter with one of his sisters, Terpsichore, muse of the dance. Terpsichore introduce herself and requested his help -- an infant Siren in a nearby fishing village was about to be drowned by the terrified villagers. Vellum convinced his new master to aid the child, and in doing so earned him a great gift of vis from the grateful muse.

After that, his supernatural family started showing up far too frequently for anyone's comfort, always with some errand for the apprentice which happened to coincide with his pater's plans.

Vellum grew up to discover a deep and profound love of books. He loves them not like a bookworm, but like a father loves his children: watching them grow in capacity and wishing to teach them more. Some whisper that he is the Muse of Books. His interest in pushing the boundaries of modern book-making techniques, particularly in terms of illuminations and illustrations, does little to dispel these rumors.

(I'm not finding the rules on char gen for this saga, so I don't know how much past-gauntlet he can be, so his bio ends here).

For rolled characteristics, you pick one die to be the high die, and the other to be the low die, for all four rolls.
2d10 β†’ [6,1] = (7)
2d10 β†’ [2,9] = (11)
2d10 β†’ [4,6] = (10)
2d10 β†’ [2,9] = (11)
For this roll it's most beneficial to pick the second die as high. That would give you: -5, +7, +2, +7.

Mythic Blood isn't Faerie; if you're descended of Mnemosyne and have Mythic Blood, it would be a Magic version. You could still be initiated into Faerie mysteries with a point of warping inflicted.

Ah, I thought that was a little too good to be true. So the next question becomes, is Craft:Painting a Com or Dex based skill? If it's not dex-based, then the -3/-2 will go to the Dex/Qik. Otherwise, I've got some thinking to do about character concept.

Gonna go with Communication. Even though it isn't verbal communication, it's still a matter of how one conveys concepts to others.
