confusion re: Firefox browser update

I apologize. I cannot figure out where to post this.

I am getting a warning banner that my browser will soon be incompatible - “soon” being July 2025. I use Firefox. The message says that the minimum version necessary will be v128 (July 2024). On August 19 I updated my Firefox, to v115.27.0esr (August 2025). I am told that this is the most recent version and the system will not “update” further. This all seems contradictory. Do I need to take some sort of action or not?

Thanks.

I use Firefox and the most recent version is 142.0.1 for the “release” version.

There are several ESR (Extended Support Release) version. 115 and 128 reached end of life for support in Sep 2025 (115.27 and 128.14). The current ESR is version 140.2 which will last until Oct 2026.

Serious question, is there some reason you are using the ESR version? ESR is mainly for businesses that don't have the time and/or manpower to test new features of the browser to make sure everything works with their setup every time there's a new release (every 6 weeks). This is for places that have hundreds or thousands (or more) of computers to maintain. The normal release is stable and reliable for all other uses, including home users and small businesses.

As a home user there is no advantage for you in using an ESR. The Release version will stay up to date automatically, is more secure, and compatible.

There is one reason to use the ESR version - if you are still using an old version of Windows.

115.27.0esr is the newest version of Firefox that works on Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1

If someone is using those old Windows versions it is probably a very good idea to update, but that might not be possible for everyone.

Thank you for jumping in, Troy and Erik T. I was at a loss!

Okay. This is very weird. Without any specific prompting on my part (although I do have it set to update automatically), my Firefox JUST (i.e. this morning) updated to v142.0.1 (I’m running Windows 10, BTW)

I have no idea why a significant change seems to have taken place, but I should be in the clear now, correct? I’m not getting the warning banner anymore.

Thanks for the help.

You are now on the most recent version of the “Release”, so as long as you have it set to auto update you should be good. If it upgrades in about 6 weeks to the next version then you know your good.

[Extra Info:
ESR versions automatically update to the next ESR (xxx.2.0) when they are end of life, unless that is disabled by an Admin setting or your OS is incompatible. Since both 115 and 128 are end of life, as long as your system is compatible (Windows 10) it should have upgraded to 140esr.

Some setting seems to have moved you to the Release channel rather than the newest ESR, most likely in the control on if to upgrade to the next version at EoL. I would have had to look at the boolean in your browser before the update to tell you for sure though.]
