dispel magic

Hello,
I'm a game master at Ars Magica. We're based in Libourne, near Bordeaux (France). Our alliance is located at the Abbey of Saint Martin de Canigou, in the eastern Pyrenees. The saga began in 1184. I have a question:
Can a magician end a spell he's cast? Can he dispel his spell that has just created a wall of stone or a wall of thorns? When a magician blinds a person, with the spell "Milky Eyes" (Ars Magica, 3rd edition, page 214 in French), thank you for your insight.
sorry for my broken english

Serfs Parma, but there are a few way to dispell a spell you've cast.

  • Cast a dispelling spell
  • Drop concentration if it uses that duration.
  • Tethered magic from HoH:TL lets you cancel any spell you've cast by concentrating, but this requires either a virtue or (I think) a Mastery.
  • Some spells have built in ways to end them early, such as some shape shifting spells.

No, magi can't just end one of their spell at will, unless that have a specific virtue.

Except for a spell with D:Conc, where they can just stop concentrating.

For spells with an ongoing duration, they can use a Perdo or Rego Vim spell to suspend or dispel the first spell.

For spells with a Momentary duration, there is nothing to dispel since the magic has dissipated. Any by-product of the spell (such as being burned by a fire spell) remains. Perdo spells with a Momentary duration causing damage to a target (such as Incantation of the Milky Eyes) are permenant. BUT Creo spell may be able to fix that damage, either by accelerating natural healing (no vis required) or through instant healing (which makes the spell a ritual requiring vis).

Vim spells that target only the magi's own spells have a different guidelines than those targetting any spells, and their guideline makes it easier to affect their own spells.

Otherwise, Arthur replied to your question.

Perdo Vim: Dispel effects of a specific type with a level less than or equal to the level + 4 magnitudes of the Vim spell + a stress die (no botch).

Rego Vim: Sustain or suppress a spell you have cast whose level is less than or equal to the level + 2 magnitudes of the Vim spell. This, and the similar guidelines below, cannot make a spell last longer than it could have naturally, and so the sustaining version is only useful with Concentration Duration, among the standard Hermetic Durations. Similarly, a spell that has been suppressed still ends when its original duration expires.

Notably, you have no special ability to destroy your own magic, at least not in the main guidelines, but you do have better control.

Bonjour,
je vous remercie pour vos réponses. Nous jouons ce soir, nous en parlerons autour de la table. En tant que maitre du jeu, je comprends un peu mieux la subtilité de la dissipation d'un sort.
