Folio submissions

One of my player characters was a member of the Collentes Arcanorum, and so received a copy of the raw submissions to a Bonisagus folio. This ended up being a fair amount of (fun!) work to prepare as a GM, and so I'd thought I'd share the full list now that the forums are back up.

Some of the submissions are from canonical magi, some are references to PCs in other games, and some are bad puns.

Submissions to the Folio of 1234

1228

The only submission is from Astutia ex Bonisagus, a hermetic descendant of Conciatta. The tractatus describe her current work in allowing vim spells to affect multiple realms without penalty, providing 5 points towards creating the relevant new guideline for Perdo Vim might-stripping spells or 1 point towards the creation of any other realm-agnostic Vim guideline. The spell is a variant of Demon's Eternal Oblivion that affects magical and faerie beings (it hasn't been tested on infernal beings).

  • Wrath of the Magus, PeVi 5, Voice, Mom, Ind. This spell can remove 5 might from a magical or faerie being if it penetrates.

  • Notes upon Expanding upon Conciatta, Q5 Vim and Q5 Magic Theory.

1229

Submissions from Rosalind, Neozoogenes, and Aerie.

Rosalind submits a tractatus and a spell text. The tractatus describes a new way to write lab texts, which effectively gives the benefit of Adept Laboratory Student if followed, i.e. +3 to the lab totals of those who study your spells. You must spend a full season reading the tractatus to gain this benefit. The spell text is an example using the new method.

  • A Modest Proposal on the Structure of Laboratory Texts, Q9 Magic Theory
  • Lab Text on Bronze Hand of Cleanliness, PeTe 24. Touch, Sun, Room, 2 uses per day, environmental trigger. Must be enchanted into a bronze glove to work. +3 to lab total due to the clarity of the text.

Neozoogenes submits two tractatus outlining how Corpus and Mentem could be integrated into a single art. This is just a theoretical proposal, and provides no bonus beyond XP.

  • Body & Mind, Q6 Corpus and Q6 Mentem.

Aerie of Bonisagus submits a variation of Winds of Soaring Wings. Unlike the standard spell, the winds created by the spell will gently lower the magus to the ground.

  • Enduring Winds of the Soaring Wings, CrAu 30.

1230

Submissions from Ricardus Caespuus (the greenhouse keeper at Durenmar) and Gunther of Iceland.

Ricardus submits a spell text and a tractatus. Both are very hard to follow, and require the reader to halve their lab total or study total. The spell has a useful side effect, and the tractatus talks about how this can be bred into plants. The tractatus is very badly written however, meaning no practical insights can be gained except XP (all 2 of it...)

  • Conjure the HelpfulVine, CrHe 5. As per the standard spell, but the vine will obey simple commands.
  • On the Cultivation, of MAgical Plants, Q4 Herbam.

Gunther submits two spell texts. Both have the side effect of not requiring words or gestures. The accompanying note implies this is an area of ongoing research but no further elaboration is given.

  • Black Thought PeMe 40. As per Black Whisper, but the wizard does not need to speak..
  • Silent Study of the Mortal Mind InMe 30. As per Peering into the Mortal Mind but no words or gestures are required.

1231

Submissions from Occultes, Periculum Minimus and Acraephen of House Bonisagus.

Occultes submits a spell text for Eyes of the Eagle, with the side effect that it doesn't have to penetrate magic resistance. It's accompanied by a tractatus on Penetration, which shares some insights from his studies in Second Sight.

  • Eyes of the Piercing Eagle, InIm 25. As per the standard spell, but it ignores magic resistance.
  • Lessons from Second Sight, Q11 Penetration.

Periculum Minimus submits a spell text for Pilum of Fire, which is less prone to magical mishaps (i.e. it reduces the number of botch dice you roll). His cover note says that he developed it by accident, and is submitting it in case its of interest to others in the Order.

  • Measured Pilum of Fire, CrIg 20. As per the standard spell, but the caster rolls two fewer botch dice (to a minimum of 1).

Acraephen submits a lab text for a ritual spell to create a magical plant (i.e. extending the guidelines for creating a magical animal to herbam), and an accompanying tractatus about magical plants and their cultivation.

  • Creation of the Spun-glass Rose, CrHe(Te,Vi) 55. Create a magical plant, using the same guidelines as creating a magical animal. In this case, it creates a rose with glass petals.
  • Magical Plants and the Cultivation Thereof, Q6 Magic Lore

1232

Three related submissions from Andrus of Bonisagus (Murion's filius and librarian for the Great Library). He's been researching into what hermetic base guidelines can be lowered, and which ones can't.

  • Group Leap of Homecoming, ReCo 35. As per Leap of Homecoming, but with Target: Group and no increase in level. Andrus's notes explain that this is the result of a failed attempt to lower the base level of Leap of Homecoming.
  • Rapid Movement of the Unsupported Body, ReCo 15 (Pers, Conc, Ind). This spell successfully lowers the base guideline for 'move a body rapidly' from 15 to 10.
  • Inherent Limits in Hermetic Theory, Q10 Magic Theory. The tractatus draws on the two spell texts to begin a way to find out which guidelines can be lowered, and which ones cannot be, and what this means for hermetic magic.

1233

You get four submissions from Cornelia of Hibernia. Her notes make it clear that her research is inspired by the non-hermetic traditions of Hibernia.

  • Insights from the Familiar, and their Application to the Talisman, Q6 Magic Theory. Once learned, personal powers imbued into the talisman don't warp the user (just like powers in the familiar bond).
  • Stories from the Hearth, Q6 Magic Theory. A series of insights from the hedge witches of Ireland, this means that the supernatural abilities of apprentices can be preserved if the Intellego Vim lab total equals the target, rather than doubling it.
  • Gift of Borrowed Health, MuCo 45 (Touch, Moon, Pair). This spell demonstrates a new guideline, which allows a light wound to be transferred from one person to another. When the spell ends, the wound returns to its original location.
  • Twin the Living Trees, MuHe 50 (Arc, Sun, Ind). This spell magically links two trees in the same forest (you need an arcane connection to both), such that they count as a single tree. Another new guideline.
  • Pass through the Twins, MuHe 20 (Touch, Diam, Ind). When used on a twinned tree, this spell creates an opening in both trees. If you pass through the opening, you appear by the other tree (i.e. you can teleport). A spell to demonstrate the potential of the new Herbam guideline.

And here's the selected submissions from my game. We played out a session to select the contents, with the other players taking the role of different Bonisagus with conflicting political goals (though the contents were selected purely on academic merits of course).

Accepted Works

  • A Modest Proposal on the Structure of Laboratory Texts, Q9 Magic Theory. Gives anyone who reads it the Adept Lab Student virtue.
  • Lab Text on Bronze Hand of Cleanliness, PeTe 24. Touch, Sun, Room, 2 uses per day, environmental trigger. Must be enchanted into a bronze glove to work. +3 to lab total due to the clarity of the text.
  • Measured Pilum of Fire, CrIg 20. As per the standard spell, but the caster rolls two fewer botch dice (to a minimum of 1).
  • Creation of the Spun-glass Rose, CrHe(Te,Vi) 55. Create a magical plant, using the same guidelines as creating a magical animal. In this case, it creates a rose with glass petals. Reading this allows any magus to learn a new guideline to create magical plants.
  • Magical Plants and the Cultivation Thereof, Q6 Magic Lore.
  • Silent Study of the Mortal Mind InMe 30. As per Peering into the Mortal Mind but no words or gestures are required.

This is great stuff. Thank you for sharing.

If you find it helpful, the first issue of Peripheral Code has a Bonisagus Folio, assembled from submissions made here on these forums.
