Background: Galan was born Gareth, son of a powerful Gruagach practitioner named Eithne in the north of England. Eithne, was grooming her son to become a Gruagach in his own right when the boy was kidnapped by an unscrupulous Bonisagus magus named Xantheus who claimed the boy as his apprentice.

These early years were difficult for Gareth, as Xantheus was neither skilled nor kind, and wanted little more than a free laboratory assistant. Gareth received minimal instruction and was treated very poorly.

Things might have continued this way for a long time were it not for the fact that five years into Gareth’s apprenticeship, Xantheus was Marched for killing another magus outside of a Wizard War. In the ensuing divvying up of Xantheus’s belongings, Gareth was given into the care of a kindly magus named Stephen, who completed his apprenticeship.

When he was gauntleted, he took the name Galan, that of an ancient king of the Picts, out of deference to his original upbringing.

The idea is that it's a surprise to him when he learns it. It's like having an aptitude for music but not picking up an instrument until later in life.

I'll move that until later. It's relevant later in development, but with all the juggling of spells I was doing in figuring out a build, I didn't notice that I was giving him the spell before he had the transformation.

The lack of ReCo spells with that being his specialty and highest combo is a bit much, too. Wizard's Leap should be a slam dunk choice for this character to have at gauntlet. The problem with the mMF surprise is that it doesn't pay off in any story sense. It's a wrinkle to the background. Stephen could have taught Wizard's Leap because it's a good spell to know and also because of his strength in ReCo and the. It's discovered.

Oh, and let's start a new thread regarding the Mystery cult, because if it's not in the book, we need to flesh out what it looks like, and while it's mainly for this character, it's also beyond this character. If, you're interested in just initiating one particular virtue, without the MC, and that virtue is Philosophic Alchemy, I think I can manage that, too. Although it will involve favors, a Quest, Sacrifice and an Ordeal... Getting an Initiation Total of 21 is always tough.

I'll swap out Voice of the Bjornaer Magus for Wizard's Leap.

In the specific case of Galan, I do want to point out that his build, in terms of virtues, doesn't really align with the idea of extracting mass quantities of Vis, his apparent goal for being part of a Mystery Cult. And while that's not a bad thing, it is an incongruity between the player and the character
The affinities don't line up with vis extraction, which is an important part of the development. Teleportation as an mMF seems odd, as well, as it doesn't speak to the nature of the character. Personal Vis Source of Corpus, indeed personal vis source in this saga, generally, is not a good virtue to take. I see many other players have taken it, so my next stop will be in the HR & CD discussion thread. Vis scarcity isn't really a problem in unsettled territory, Hermetically speaking. Hunting it down and securing the sources, though... Unaging, also, if we adopt OGC seems to be a waste of a virtue, and it does for a magus, generally, anyway, but we can possibly come up with some other alternative virtue at that step.

This character feels min-maxed, it it comes out in the flaws. In fairness, due to a vacation and my extended illness, I haven't given the other characters as tough a looky-lou, but that's coming for them. How is he going to repay favors to the Gruagach when he's no longer local to them? More specifically, how are they going to make sure he knows they need him to repay the favor. Martial Block, for this character is a flaw without consequences, IMO. And lastly, there's Deficient Auram. While it's not, technically, wrong it just smacks of min-maxing. So, if you want to keep it as a flaw, you will have to reconfigure half of your XP spend allocated to Arts to Auram, which by my reckoning would be 60 xp, although I'd drop it to 55 to make it a round number and get the Auram score to 10.

My comments are as follows.

Reason for joining the mystery cult: I'd like to have a more nuanced reason for joining the MC than simply wanting to extract lots of vis. (As a player I'm interested to see how Philosophic Alchemy plays out, but it's not a monomaniacal goal for my character.) Now that we've settled on the OGC as the relevant MC, I can cater Galan's motivation to conform with what they stand for. The Order of the Green Cockerel is said to be "a learned society that studies advances in the new science of alchemy, attempting to reconcile them with Hermetic theory." Presumably that's an overarching goal for him. I'm guessing that would involve xp in Philosophiae (natural philosophy) as well as in various Arts. (It seems like most of the Arts could have something to do with alchemy.) Though I have to admit that while that seems a valid goal, I'm not sure exactly what that translates into in game play. I'd love to give my character 'alchemy' spells, but I'm having trouble thinking up some good ones. Even Touch of Midas doesn't seem like an alchemy spell since it's creating gold from nothing rather than changing lead into gold. (And a Muto spell couldn't really achieve that, since it can't make a permanent change.) I'm left with healing spells and spells to improve attributes, but while those are all very good spells to have, they don't translate into fun play. Back to the spell guidelines. :slight_smile:

Art Affinities: As for extracting vis using Philosophic Alchemy, any Form is relevant. If you want to extract Corpus vis, you need a good Corpus Art. With PA, it's not all about Creo Vim. So I think having an Affinity for Corpus is perfectly reasonable. Would you feel more comfortable with the character if his other affinity was for Creo? Muto? Something else? I was figuring that the OGC draws adherents with many gifts and that a Rego-skilled magus might be just as interested in joining as a Creo-skilled magus.

Unaging: I took that because I wasn't sure exactly where the ruling was going to come down on mystery cults, and I wanted the virtue. I thought it was safest to add it into the character build, with the idea that I could always swap it out if it turned out that an initiation was possible. As it stands, I'll probably swap it out for Cabal Legacy.

PVS: I'll drop that in favor of something else, likely Planetary Magic.

Favors: I added that flaw in when I wasn't sure if the MC aspect of the character was going to work out. I'd been working on another angle of maybe trying to go for a breakthrough with Gruagach magic. Now that the MC seems to be a going concern again, that aspect and this flaw are inappropriate, I agree. I'll want something more appropriate to a MC character. I'd thought of Favors to the OGC, but really, he'll be doing enough quid-pro-quo for them with initiations that Favors might be gilding the lily. In fact, I start to wonder how Favors would work out in general as a flaw, given that we're so far removed from everywhere. How would you feel about him replacing Favors with Dependent - his orphaned nephew whom he's had to take care of when his sister and BIL died? (FYI, I may modify his background given the current changes. So don't go with what's written above.)

mMF (teleportation): Part of it was that I didn't want to make a one-dimensional character. I didn't want him to be all vis extraction, all the time. So I was going for a little breadth. If you'd prefer a character with a narrower focus, however, I can accommodate.

mMF in general: If I have a mMF must it be related to alchemy? If so, what sort of mMFs would you consider appropriate? I'd considered mMF (perfection of the human body) as a possibility, but I wasn't sure what that would include, or whether it would be interesting to play. I don't want to get a mMF that doesn't apply to anything particularly relevant to the saga. He could take a mMF with vis extraction, but (a) I don't want to break the bank with vis, and (b) as I said, I don't want to have a singular focus in vis extraction. Your thoughts as to what you'd approve for a mMF would be appreciated.

Deficient Auram: That was, in part, to represent that his awful original parens commited the low crime of improperly opening his Arts. However, given your new requirements, I'll probably swap this out for another flaw. Out of curiosity, though, does the requirement to have a 10 in an Art apply to any Deficient Form or Technique?

While we're talking about Dependents, I wanted to flesh out my own proposed Dependent Flaw.

What I'd like is for Galan, in his wanderings, to have come across a young boy out in the streets, living on his own. (Raised in the Gutter flaw) The boy had nowhere to turn to for help and no one to support him. Odds were pretty good he might not survive the next winter. Galan sees in the boy a spark of potential, and maybe a little bit of himself as a youth and his natural compassion (Compassionate flaw) takes over. He takes the boy under his wing, essentially adopting him as the son he'll never have. Of course the boy has been living on his own for at least a few years and probably has some strong opinions about how he ought to live. And he's used to doing what he wants, so he may be prone to getting into trouble. All the standard potential stories for a dependent.

Now, if having an apprentice be your dependent is allowed (I'd naturally assumed it wasn't, but would be glad to be proven wrong), the story works just as well (maybe even better), if the boy was Gifted and that's why he was out on the streets. He was tossed out by his family and shunned by others on the street. He really can't catch a break because the Gift keeps getting in the way. Everyone thinks the worst of him, so he's behaved accordingly. It would be the perfect situation for Galan to take an apprentice and gives him an apprentice with character.

That having been said, I'm good with either decision on how Dependents works. If the boy is just an adopted ward, that makes for good story too. There's all sorts of potential with a headstrong street kid trying to fit into a covenant. And an older magus trying to come to grips with a new ward.

And FWIW, the boy would be at the start of his apprenticeship at saga start, which would definitely put him down on the "relatively weak" scale for some time to come.

I'd mentioned the Dependents flaw some time ago, and asked if it was okay. I just wanted to get my tent stake in the ground about the details of it so it wouldn't seem too much like a "me too" flaw.

That's a very good question, and the main reason I'd originally assumed that an apprentice couldn't be a Dependent. As near as I can tell, there is no difference.
