Labs

Haha, create a vis extraction farm fueled by apprentices, I like it.

Uh... I'd have to double check: are we using the rules from RoP:M? Would we quickly destroy our aura if so?

Probably, it's also really unnecessary because of out large vis income.

"Two foci"? No, I don't think so. Foci aren't marked for multiples, though I suppose technically a Major Focus and a Minor Focus are not the same. You can give it multiple specializations, up to 6. No more than 2 activities and no more than 2 Techniques.

Right. I was thinking specializations.

I am curious how the bonuses for the free virtues are or are not being applied to the lab characteristics.
For example, all the labs (http://praesidiumorae.wikidot.com/labs) are listed as +1 for all characteristics except size, and all posses the Superior Equipment virtue. But that virtue includes +2 Upkeep. Combined with Superior Construction, there should be a +2 total for Safety. Am I missing something?
I ask, because I was thinking about lab updates for Taurus' activities in 1100, and I want to make sure I understand how the rules are being applied ...

Also, none of the labs have a Health characteristic listed.

Okay, I am trying to re-read the lab rules in Covenants for the umpteenth time, and they are still not making sense to me. Also, the labs listed under resources do not include the Refinement characteristic.
Could someone please walk through how the current scores for Taurus' lab were calculated?

Also, I was planning to have Taurus update his longevity ritual, as it has been a while, and was thinking about specializing his lab for Creo and Corpus to start. I would need to spend a season installing an appropriate virtue or feature to get a specialization bonus, right? The box on pg 112 states that a lab specializing in Creo will be brightly lit, clean, and contain growing things, but the virtues that would seem to accompany this appearance (Superior Lighting and Pot Plants for example) don't include a Creo bonus. I think I need a little guidance here ...

What part of the lab rules are you having trouble with?

Right I see his page, basically the only really important ones are General Quality and Specialisations.

So Taurus has +1 Gen quality which applies a +1 bonus to all activities undertaken in the lab and +1 Vis extraction Specialisation, which is an additional +1 to all vis extraction totals in the lab, the gernal quality value in added on top of them.

Safety doesn't matter as long as it's positive.

So your base safety is Lab Refinement - Occupied size, and occupied size is basically how many virtues and flaws you have, Major virtues count for 3 points of occupied size, minors for 1. A flaw will offset the occupying size of a virtue by an equal number of points.

The available space you have for virtues is Refinement + Size, Refinment always starts at zero unless your have less than 3 Magic theory, in which case it is Magic Theory - 3, to increase refinement you must spend a season refining it, your max refinement is magic theory - 3. During a season of refinment a stress die of Magic Theory + int is rolled vs ease factor 12, if that succeeds you gain the highly organised virtue.

Aesthetics is literally a reputation statistic, upkeep tells you how expensive the lab is in the wealth and poverty section.

To sum up, Taurus has a +1 lab total on all lab activities from his lab virtues, except for vis extraction where he gets +2

For Taurus lab- it currently has no levels of refinement.
Superior construction gives +1 safety and +1 aesthetics
Superior equipment gives +1 general quality, +1 safety, +1 vis extraction- the upkeep is waved since we have a glassblower with craft skill 6
Spacious gives +1 occupied size, +2 safety, +1 aesthetics
Empty (required because the available space is 2 larger than the occupied space) gives +1 upkeep and -1 aesthetics
The lab size-refinement gives a base safety of -3, plus 4 due to virtues for a +1 total.

Putting any minor feature in your lab after game start will eliminate the empty flaw. Putting in a major feature will also take out the spacious virtue...

Thanks for the clarification. I think I was mostly missing the base safety calculations ...

In the meantime, I am having trouble thinking about why a Clan Midusulf Bjornaer has chosen to reside in this well-settled tribunal. That has been another reason for my delay in determining seasonal activities. A couple questions, and then my plans:

  1. Is any of the vis from our sources distributed to the magi on a regular basis?
  2. Are there any wilderness areas within a couple leagues of the covenant?

Plans (which I will put in the spreadsheet shortly):
Spring: Develop Area Lore: Locri as an ability, possibly with Gabriele, if that is allowed, in order to identify some suitably "wild places".
Summer: Study the Corpus Summa
Autumn: Study the Intellego Summa (stretching the senses)
Winter: Refine Lab

This looks fine until the very last line. The occupied size is just +1. So the base Safety is Refinement 0 - Occupied Size 1 = -1. Then you get Virtues for +1+1+2. So the Safety should be +3.

You're right, my mistake.

Aurthor will copy Ouragan and Taurus in having a large, spacious lab. I've updated the wiki.

Hi all!

silveroak, I am a bit confused about Andros's lab. It started out as a +3(+1), with Spacious, Superior Construction and Superior Equipment (and Empty), yes? Or just +3(+0) with Superior Construction and Superior Equipment (and Empty). The Lab does not show Upkeep (should be 1) , and has a Safety of -1 (should be +2).

Also, a disaster in experimenting on the spell Ironhide in 1103? Not familiar with it.

It started out as 3(1) with spacious, superior construction, superior equipment and empty. Then in 1103 Andros installed a major feature (antechamber) which removed spacious and empty, resulting in the stats you see now. Upkeep score is currently at 0, since the +1 upkeep came from the empty flaw.

Andros refines his lab in 1104 (sorry, posted this in OOC discussion):
Spring 1104 he Refined his Lab to 1, Size/Occupied is now 3(2), roll for Highly Organized (1+5+ _: 1D10 = [5] = 5 = 11. miss by 1! Since it's seasonal can't use Confidence, bah.
Roll for Spotless, 1 + 5 + _: 1D10 = [4] = 4 = 10, not even close.
+2 MT exposure

Lab now has +1 Safety, yay.

silveroak, where is the spell Ironhide from?

I daresay that's its an expansion of the spell "gift of the bear's fortitude" which is some like like +3 soak as your skin is made more resistant to damage.

Hi crawfs!

Makes sense, it's level 35 MuCo, a +5 Soak is Base 25 +2 Sun (Per., Ind) = 35. And it has to fall within Andros's mmF for him to be able to invent it in 2 seasons, but then the casting totals are wrong, it should be +1 Sta, +28 TeFo + 14 mmF = +43.

Thanks!

Exactly this- it gives +5 soak, but otherwise is like "Gift of the Bear's Fortitude" I may well have made an error calculating the casting total...

Query: when Markus teaches classes, is he using the Teaching lab? Or is someone else using that room?

Thanks!
