Lucas of Mercere - Autumn 1241

Lucas was born into House Mercere of the Order of Hermes, and was destined to become a Redcap when he grew up - a fine fate for anyone. But destiny took over when he was seven years old and it was discovered that he was one of the few in his house with the Gift. From that point on, his future was set. He would be a magus of House Mercere, a symbol that magic was not lost to this noble house.

His apprenticeship began when he was ten years old, that being considered an ideal age to begin magical training. It progressed well, though not without its own peculiarities. First was the true gentle nature of Lucas’s Gift. It was clear to all who knew him that Lucas had been blessed with a Gentle Gift, for his presence inspired none of the uneasiness that usually comes with the Gift. But beyond that, Lucas seemed able to practice his magic without the need for strong gestures, and without the need to speak incantations. Aside from his wizard’s sigil, the faint smell of parchment or books that appears whenever he casts a spell, there was generally no indication that he was the source of the magical effects he generated.

Also of interest, when Lucas was just seventeen, only halfway through his apprenticeship, he fell in love with Cecilia de Mercere, a fellow apprentice, though one without the Gift. Generally marriage while serving as an apprentice was not permitted. But in this case, when Lucas asked it of his parens, his request was granted. There were few enough members of the house with the Gift. And it wouldn’t be long after his gauntlet that Lucas would start taking a longevity potion, and be rendered infertile. Although a married apprentice was unorthodox, House Mercere was willing to allow anything that might lead to another Gifted member of the house. Alas, this effort proved to be in vain. But most in the house think it was worth trying.

The last interesting occurrence happened as Lucas was entering his last year of his apprenticeship. At this point, his parens told him that he had shown great promise, and that as a result, he as being offered membership in the Milvi Antiquiti, a group descended from Mutant de Mercere, one of Lucas’s direct blood ancestors. The Milvi Antiquiti, or “kites of old,” his parens explained, were a group of Mutantes and their companions who sought to preserve and distribute knowledge throughout the Order. Upon hearing the goals of the Order, Lucas was proud to accept this offer, which lead to his parens teaching him certain techniques in his last year that were developed by the Order.

Ten years ago, Lucas finished his gauntlet and found himself a full-fledged magus. The following years were filled with study and family, leading to a total of four children before he first went through his longevity ritual. After that, he started to feel like he wanted to move. While he could certainly stay in his current covenant as long as he wished, something was driving him to get out and see some more of the world. As it turned out, his knowledge of the language of Catalan made him a perfect match for a new position the House wanted to fill in the Covenant of Andorra. They wanted a Mercere magus to help support a Redcap living there, and Lucas was offered that position. He quickly said yes and began to pack his family up for the trip.

Change an item made of animal material — silk, wool, or leather — so it cannot be cut or penetrated by weapons. A simple cloth doublet becomes the equivalent of armor with no Load and a +3 Soak bonus. Armor made of quilted material or any kind of leather improves its Protection by an additional +3. The magic does not make the armor better at absorbing shock, so this +3 bonus is the limit that can be bestowed without changing the material into something completely different. At the storyguide’s option, the bonus given by this spell may not apply against strictly blunt weapons like clubs and staves.

Transforms a set of clothing into different clothes. The substance and color must be preserved, but the shape and number of the garments can be altered. Thus a peasant’s woolen smock can become a woolen dress, wimple, and cloak. An Intelligence + Finesse roll determines the quality of the new set of clothes; an Ease Factor of 6 is sufficient for a simple change, although the Ease Factor is 3 points higher if the new clothes are dramatically different from the old. The spell assumes that the clothing is in the main of animal origin — wool, felt, fur, leather, and silk — which is usually the case. A casting requisite of Herbam is needed to transform garments that are partly of plant origin, but items made solely of plant matter cannot be affected. Accouterments like wooden or metal fastenings remain unchanged.

The spell is very forceful, and has an equivalent Strength of +5; if the object is being held by someone else, then make an opposed Strength roll. If the caster rolls higher then the item is lost to its holder.

The heavier the object is, the slower the unseen porter moves. If delicacy is required, high Finesse stress rolls (12+ or so) are needed. The spell can only carry inanimate objects, and cannot carry you. It also cannot lift things more than 6 feet above the ground. Casting requisites of an appropriate Form for the target are required.

Lucas’s laboratory is located in the first layer of a regio overlapping Lucas’s manor house and surrounding grounds. In particular, it is located on top of the old watch tower overlooking the sea. The regio’s first layer contains a copy of the ancient Roman temple to Hecate that used to stand where the watch tower is today. Lucas has taken over this temple as his laboratory, and has been accepted by the magical servants, who have been waiting for centuries for someone to serve. Unfortunately, some of these servants have escaped into the real world, where they cause trouble in the manor house and the grounds associated with it. The watchtower contains a shadow lab that appears to be dedicated to natural philosophy, particularly to studying the birds of Mallorca.

Lucas and his family have settled into a small estate on the outskirts of Palma along a busy road into the city. They live in a small manor house with an olive grove, an orange grove, and a vineyard attached. The the vineyard and the groves are of moderate size and bring in about 30£ a year.

The manor house is located on the site where an ancient Roman temple once stood. In fact, a watchtower overlooking the sea is built precisely where the temple was, even to the point of using some of its stone in its construction. Having the regio has caused the place to experience certain peculiarities (including magical pests) that have given it a reputation for being haunted. In fact, that’s how Lucas was able to get the manor house in the first place. Lucas has placed his laboratory in the first level of the regio, where a copy of the original Roman temple still stands.

A manor house was built many years ago for a very well-to-do fence who dealt with local pirates. The man had chosen this location because the rumors of hauntings kept others away and made moving stolen goods easier. This fence had a secret and secure basement room installed that he used to hide items to be fenced or people on the run. Lucas has converted this room into a safe room for his family to go should there be any trouble in the manor.

BTW, for what it's worth, I like lucas. He's not a combat monster, but he's a very useful guy to have around, with a wide range of abilities (and tethered/harnessed magic). And he and Wirth seems quite similar in some aspects.
