Magi

This thread is for the posting of completed magi characters- changes to a character should be made by editing, and only the characters should be here, not animal companions, familiars, labs, etc. Each magus will be one post which will be edited as the game progresses, you will have a second thread for development where the history of the character can be discussed.

Personal Vis Source: At the end of his apprenticeship, Maximilian was given the rights to an Herbam vis source in the Buraïcus river gorge, which is located about 30 miles east of Patras (in Morea). The source yields 8 pawns per year and needs to be harvested during the summer (details to be added).

Favors: Maximilian owes many favors to Aition of Criamon, the magus who realized that the boy had the Gift and brought him in. Maximilian's mater was a metoikos (resident foreigner) at the time, and it is Aition who arranged for her to take Maximilian as her apprentice. He also acted as an outside mentor and, when Maximilian completed his Gauntlet, transferred ownership of a vis source to him (see above). Aition wanders through the tribunal visiting oracular sites and searching for visions. He occasionally asks Maximilian to perform tasks for him. Some of the tasks are quite mundane and without consequence; others involve crafting charged item for some specific (but unnamed) purpose. Occasionally, one of these tasks will lead to a story. In the past, these tasks have not been too difficult to perform nor did they put Maximilian in danger. They have sometimes been beneficial to him, although some seemed a complete loss of time. Those that might require the loss of a season probably won't happen more often than once every few years.

Possessions:
5 Tribunal tokens
26 pawns of Herbam vis
1 pawn of Vim vis
Enchanted wand (total capacity 15 pawns, used 4 pawns)
[list]* Description: The wand is made of hornbeam, with its handle forming a mesh of wood over a small capsule of silver containing a few drops of mercury. Any further enchantment into the wand has +3 to the lab total because of the Verditius Runes carved into the wand when it was opened for enchantment.
[*]Enchantment: Pilum of Fire (R:Voice, D:Mom, T:Ind, deals +15 damage), 24 uses/day, +30 Penetration

Personal lab texts (not translated) to enchant the following effects:

  • Invested Item, CrIg 40: Pilum of Fire (R:Voice, D:Mom, T:Ind, deals +15 damage), 24 uses/day, +30 Penetration, to be enchanted into a wand
  • Charged Item, CrIg 60: Cleansing Bolt of Fire (R:Sight, D:Mom, T:Ind, deals +20 damage), +60 Penetration, to be enchanted into a wand tipped by a ruby

Agapitus

Born as the third child of five to his parents in Italy, Agapitus was one of two gifted children born into that set of siblings, the other being his youngest sister. His parents were completely overjoyed at their luck, though they were still attentive to all of their children. Agapitus’s father was a Redcap, and his mother was a member of the Milvi Antiquiti within house Mercere. Though his mother was originally planning on not training her own son, but the moment he showed any capability in Mutanum Magic, her mind changed quickly, and she began training him very early.

Given the boy’s age, his education was split up a bit to make things easier to digest. After a few years of training, the boy worked to aide his mother in her work to diffuse knowledge through books to all who requested it. He was mostly a librarian’s assistant when he was young and his mother’s apprentice. During this time, his mother also noticed the boy had a special affinity with animals. Agapitus seemed to naturally adore any sort of cat, dog, horse, and many other creatures, and they seemed unbothered by him. The only creatures the boy seemed to reject were snakes and lizards, which his mother felt was a fine trade off.

During his apprenticeship, Agapitus’s free time was filled with reading and stories mostly. His view of the world was somewhat limited, as this had basically been his life as long as he could remember. And as time went by, his view of the world became somewhat romanticized, having odd theories of love and adventure. He was not used to dealing with people outside of his own family besides business transactions, so Agapitus became tended to be shy around other people.

These tendencies frustrated his mother and other Mercere a bit. They were trying to encourage him to start having children to continue the line, but between his slight delusions and his introversion. Agapitus successfully completed his gauntlet, Agapitus was encouraged to leave home to live in the Thebes tribunal and set up shop for the Milvi Antiquiti there. Though this was partially true, it was more to get Agapitus out of his shell, so he would properly continue the Mercere line.

So Alair headed southeast to the Thebes Tribunal, and quickly began trying to find a place to work from and adapt to the area, unknowing of the actual reason he was there.

Background:
The child who would become Liberius was intelligent but frail. His parents were repulsed by his Gift, and were relieved when a strange old man offered to take the child to an environment where he would be more comfortable.

Liberius's master, Emygdius of Bonisagus, was brilliant but erratic, and would sometimes neglect his apprentice for seasons at a time. Liberius spent these seasons in the covenant library, becoming fascinated by the magical world described in the covenant's books. The library contained a few books in Greek as well as books in Latin, so Liberius taught himself Greek in order to read them. While not in the library, he would entertain the covenfolk by re-telling stories he had read in the books, and by the end of his apprenticeship he was an accomplished storyteller.

Liberius approaches magic as something to understand rather than something to do, and during his apprenticeship he focused on the art of Intellego in order to better learn about the world. He made it his life's mission to write a book that would become famous throughout the Order of Hermes. He is still undecided what that book should be about: one of the Arts, or Magic Theory, or perhaps even an enchanted item in the form of a book, which is magically filled with whatever knowledge the reader desires. He knows he is not experienced enough to begin writing his book yet, although in a sense he has already begun, since he thinks of his entire magical career as research for his eventual great work.

Liberius's focus on learning from books led to a flaw in his spellcasting process, which his master did not notice until it was too late to be corrected. Liberius cannot cast a spell without reading words of power from a book or scroll. It's not that he can't remember the words, it's that the act of reading is an essential part of his spellcasting process. He carries with him at all times a large scroll containing the words of power which he needs to cast all his spells and which he can combine to cast spontaneous magic. Given time and writing materials, Liberius could recreate the scroll from memory, but without it he is entirely unable to cast spells. The need to hurriedly combine written words when casting spontaneous magic also means that doing so is always an effort for him. He has recently had the idea to partially get around his restriction by creating enchanted items (for example, a magical torch so that he always has light to read by), but he has not made any yet.

In the last year of Liberius's apprenticeship, Emygdius died in a laboratory accident. One of the other magi of the covenant finished Liberius's apprenticeship and administered his gauntlet. Emygdius had not finished with his apprentice, however, and on the day of Liberius's gauntlet he returned as a magical ghost to deliver another session of tuition. Emygdius continues to return at sporadic intervals to teach his apprentice new lessons, but death has rendered him even more eccentric than he was in life, so both his lessons and his teaching methods have become bizarre and possibly dangerous.

During his time in his home covenant library, Liberius became fascinated by tales of ancient Greece and its lost magical secrets. Now that he's passed his gauntlet, he has headed to the Thebes tribunal in the hope of discovering ancient magical secrets (and write a book about them).

Appearance: Omphalos is a regal young man, his form is robust without being muscular. His hair is dark and curly matching a set of soft blue eyes. His clothing tends to be simple while his voice is a mixture of charm and command.

Background: In the early days of his youth the boy that became Omphalos was the third son of a merchant living on the vast olive fields that contained their livelihood and crop. Even from the earliest age the boy set people at edge, his precocious intelligence he asked questions that often didn't have easy answers, or even more were incredibly unsettling. Even on the night of his birth terrible storms raged over the countryside where normally the complacent weather stood its vigil. The boys staggering intellect set him apart and the budding gift made the boy an absolute pariah even if his face was handsome and his words perfect. He followed his father wherever he went on his business as a young child and misfortune of the gift followed behind them, until Lysandra of Jerbiton was conducting business near to the village of the boys farm, and heard tales of the touched boy, all sort of silly myths surrounded the child, that he stole shadows, or caused nightmares, but the intrigue drew her closer. What she found was a young boy who was utterly brilliant, enduring and charming, and well traveled even at a young age who latched onto everything he heard.
He was picked up after Lysandra after noting such a child a bright child could bring misfortune, that and a lump of gold produced by the touch of midas removed any question about profitable business. In a matter of moments his life moved to Polyaigos for the first two years of his education he trained in language both classic greek and latin both which he quickly picked up as he studied under the mentors there. However one of the other students even at a young age took a shine to him, causing issues with the patron when he grew jealous of her childish affections for him...which luckily was cooled down before being smashed with a rock. From there he was brought unto Delos, for the inspection...he never made it past the initial look through just as soon as Myria of Bonisagus had caught sight of him after a short interview she pressed two tokens into his hand and took the right of her House unwilling to bear a chance of losing such a bright mind. He was presented and then returned back to Polyaigos to study under his parens during this time, his natural prelediction for the magic of the sky became manifest, with his arts opened the call of the sky became palatable and in come cases resonant with the waters below. His blood called back to the great god, the king of Olympus somewhere in the long line of his family the power of Zeus pored through his veins. His mentor accepted no less of his skills, making him cast under combat conditions to perfect his technique drilled into him how to control his ability, though it came at the cost of speed. The greater his power became however came at its own cost, as some of his power originated from the gods it put him within their grasp as well weakening his ability to resist them on anything but a fair playing field. He spent years aiding his master in the lab working towards her own studies to find his desire to surpass her even at such a young age, the heremetic limit...the failings of Bonisagus became his greatest enemy a desire that with such a brilliant mind, that the founder of the order had created Parma Magica, with no such breakthrough since..it was inexcusable.
His study continued with plenty of time in the lab though as part close tradition he traveled from his home covenant to Durenmar the heart of the order to be trained for two years by a close Magus Erismina who was trained by the same master as his parens. He spent two years solidifying his knowledge in latin, the inner secrets of teaching and exemplifying how to teach the hermetic principles. However there after he spent two solid years assisting in the lab long grueling work, that his masculine and attractive form caused a dalliance by Erasmina...that ended in a post coital lab accident, while he managed not to cause any physical harm his ability to channel external sources of magic such as vis were saturated requiring far more for him to control its power. In return for his time however his own master was graced by the presence of her apprentice whom took a very overzealous attraction to the young apprentice, that bordered on obsession. Causing no sheer end of frustration and problems after two years he was rid of the apprentice and in the end made his way through his gauntlet, a brutal affair of magical theory and context easily passing. In the end he took up the name Omphalos, the navel of creation and the stone that replaced Zeus when his father came to swallow him. After his gaunlet he chose not to return to Polyaigos instead taking interest in the institution of a new covenant where he may better have the time to perfect his study and change the face of the order of hermes by shattering its limits, as well as communing with his birthright as son of the king of the Gods.
