When Marcus was born in a small town in Sicily, his mother died in childbirth. When he was eight, his father died in an accident. After that, Marcus was sent to live with the monks of a local abbey. They accepted him, and when he was old enough, he took his vows in the order. The monastery was famous for it's books, and Marcus was trained in the process of making and copying them. In particular, he excelled in the art of making inks.

However, all was not right in the monastery, however, The treasurer was corrupt, and the prior old and going senile. When Marcus discovered the treasurer's sins, he brought what he had learned to the prior. But the treasurer was silver-tongued and turned the accusation back onto Marcus. Despite his innocence, Marcus was found guilty and expelled from the monastery. He could have possibly returned if he repented what he was accused of. But the former monk refused to offer repentance for a sin he did not commit.

Marcus was able to get a little bit of work in a nearby town, and he remained a deacon in the church. But his reputation preceded him, and he was always under a cloud of suspicion. Eventually, he sold everything he owned and bought passage from Sicily to one of the Italian states, hoping to escape his terrible reputation. However, the ship he was on was chasd by pirates and was forced to find safe harbor on Malta. But even that was not enough. The pirates chased the ship into port, and took her. Most of the passengers, including Marcus were able to flee, as the pirates were not slavers, and cared only for the goods in the ship's hold.

Unfortunately, that has left Marcus in a bad position. He's stranded on Malta with no money and no prospect of getting off the island any time soon.

Here's an idea for an ink-maker. He's a former Sicilian monk cast out of his monastery for putting the spotlight on some corruption.

He's left as a Pious Christian, but one a bit disillusioned with the church itself.

This introduction is very simple-
The archbishop of Sicily has received a request for a priest to serve at the newly chartered city, and has none to spare. He would like for Marcus to serve in this capacity until a proper priest can be found or raised. The archbishop realizes this is not exactly the life you signed up for, but it could be a good temporary position while the situation at the monastery is being resolved. Given the fact this city was chartered on nominally Christian lands managed by a Muslim Noble, the Archbishop would like you to send regular reports of what occurs there. "hopefully your observation and curiosity which uncovered problems at the monastery will do much better service to yourself personally as well as the church here."

Sounds perfect.
