OOC Discussion

I can take over playing Theodoric, if that's OK with everyone.

I'm going to say go for it, at least until everyone gets back to the covenant. Hopefully by then Trogdor should be back from his holiday, and we can discuss who plays who from then on.

Works for me.

Scott

I'm back from vacation. It was lots of fun, with absolutely no rain, despite being in Alaska and Seattle. Now I'm trying to clear off my desk at work. But I'll do what I can to catch up in the game.

Welcome back.

I was reading the thread about the barrows and came across this example of ceremonial spontaneous casting:

Subject: Chapter 2: Somewhere, Under the Barrow...

I was trying to see if I understood the rules for ceremonial casting, and I can't quite figure out how Patrick got to 47 + Aura + 1d10 to do a ward against ghosts.

Looking at his character sheet I see that he has Re 14, Me 8, Sta 2, Artes LIberales 4, Philosophia 3, and a minor magical focus for wards.

That gives me: 14 (Re) + 8 (Me) + 8 (Me again for magical focus) + 2 (Sta) + 4 (AL) + 3 (Philosophia) + Aura + 1d10 = 36 + Aura + 1d10

But I don't see where the extra 11 points come from. Am I missing something? I only ask because don't want to short myself with spontaneous castings.

Part of it is Patrick's Hermetic Geometry mystery virtue - this gives +3 to any ring or circle spell, and an additional +3 when such spells are cast ceremonially, so there's a +6 coming in there.

I think you've also miscounted slightly - by my maths, 14 (Re) + 8 (Me) + 8 (Me again for magical focus) + 2 (Sta) + 4 (AL) + 3 (Philosophia) = 39, not 36.

The remaining +2 is probably loud words and exaggerated gestures (although maintaining those over 75 minutes of casting would be impressive).

You've obviously never watched my wife. But then, she's Italian and Polish.

Scott

Quite right. I can't do simple math. What would my ten-year-old say?

I've been beginning to think about the next adventure for Gregorius.

The obvious first question is whether you have anything you want to spring on him?

If not, I think he's got two main things he's interested in doing:

  • Boustaphan has instructed him to investigate trade in the area - he'll probably work through grog intermediaries in the first place (as he doesn't speak the language, has no particularly relevant skills and wants to spend time studying), but something could well happen to draw his personal attention.
  • He still wants to track down the local hedge wizards - he's been fishing for information on this for a while, so possibly something comes upt o make him think he's finally located one/some?

Plus anything relating to the destruction of the previous covenant that doesn't involve hedge wizards, of course.

In terms of timescales, I'd really like to get at least one season of solid study in, preferably more, but at the same time there's a limit to how long you can sensibly delay some of these things.

To add, there's one other thing he'd be interested in, and that's what's happened to Tasia - however, I'm happy to just handwave that once if becomes clear she's missing, he spends a non-distracting amount of time trying to work out what happened to her and it doesn't end up with a returned Tasia - unless there's something you want to run based off it.

Oh, you're not handwaving that one.

See, the big problem is, Tasia has disappeared during Spring. Spring is also when the Aegis is cast, and Tasia is the only one who knows how to do it. So that's something you might want to worry about....

I'm guessing you'll want to deal with this before worrying about the other ideas you mentioned.

Scott

You've got a level 25 Aegis of the Hearth lab text in the library. Someone just needs to take a season to learn it. Being a Rego specialist, Stephen would be happy to do so. But I'm guessing that you don't want a visitor casting the spell.

He's also a Cautious Sorcerer, if that matters.

Fray would be open to learning it too, same issue as Stephen though if that matters. By extension, perhaps a few Magi knowing it would be useful. Getting a degree of redundancy in casting of the Aegis is desirable imo.

Yes, there's a lab text in the library. But you don't have an entire season--you're already in the middle of Spring.

Scott

Ah, I haven't been paying close enough attention to the season,

Can you spontaneously cast ritual spells? (I can't find anything that says specifically that you can't.) If so, Stephen could manage a spontaneous level 18 AoH without much trouble, with each +1 making it increasingly more difficult.

Ah - I'd assumed it had already been cast for this year.

Failing finding Tasia, it looks like we need a casting tablet in a hurry (and it'll have to be Viola who uses it, as Gregorius' Waster of Vis flaw and the constraints of casting tablets means he won't be able to use it except in the unlikely event they find a casting tablet written by another Waster of Vis).

But I assume that looking for Tasia is the first course of action - and this will be another Spring adventure?

Indeed.

Scott

And here I thought we'd finally advanced all the way to Summer.

Okay. Do you want to start a new thread for it, establishing how long it is since she headed off, and until we need her to cast the spell?

Bah. We can't be having with any of this linear time nonsense.
