Prelude: The Gathering (Clement)

Procella says, "I have a better idea. This decision must be handled as all Hermetic disputes are handled. An arbitration has no legal standing, and can be argued ad infinitum by the losing side, but Certamen is binding. Ferilan, I challenge you to Certamen, and I choose the Form of Rego as the Technique for the contest, and the winner of the contest will be the Guernicus representative to Grand Tribunal."
Ferilan looks stunned by the challenge at first, but then looks around the room and his eyes lock with Clement for a moment, "Very well, Procella, I accept the challenge, and name Clement as my champion. I will allow him to choose the Form of his own."
Procella looks stunned by the maneuver and seeks to find some way around it, but the Traditionalist has been undone by her hidebound traditionalism.

Roll for initiative
Choose your form for attack and defense, and make the attack and defense rolls, as well and post the results.
I'll roll Odds for Technique and Evens for Form to attack, and you can make your decisions as you see fit, as I'm going after you.
You'll need to decide earlier than normal whether to weaken or carry the advantage over to the next round.

Clement stands and takes his place. He chooses the form of Mentem and a figure that looks like the representation of Guericius appears between them. They each try to control it to come to them.

init -1 + 3 +certimen init (1d10=2) = 4

Form is Mentem

Attack:Pre 0 + Rego 24 +24 (focus) + certimen attack roll (1d10=1) exploder + certimen attack roll exploder (1d10=3) 7 =55
Defense Per 4 + Me 27 + certimen defense (1d10=4) = 35

If he wins he will carry the advantage
resistance: param 4 + stam 1 = 5

Procella attacks with Rego
Initiative=12
Procella Attacks, and explodes, 14 + 37+2=53
Defense total of 38.

Procella attacks first, and applies a lot of effort and pulls the doll strongly towards here, and her attack is used to immediately weaken Clement. Attack Advantage 53-35=18
She attempts to weaken Clement: 18 +2+4=24; Clements Resistance is 4+1 (24-5=19) inflicts 4 fatigue levels upon Clement, and he wobbles as the representation of Guernicus moves towards Procella.

Attack Rego 4 + 24 + 24 + certimen attack (1d10=9) -3 = 58
Defense Mentem 0 + 27 + certimen defense (1d10=9) -3 =31

Will try to weaken this time.

First, at -4 Fatigue levels you're at Dazed, -5. And she has initiative. Clement would realize this and probably switch his approach to ensure he can get off some attack, otherwise if she gets through, and she's fully fresh, she's going to take Clement out, and if we play it that Clement has a chance, he might be able to take Procella out, but that's not assured.

he will flip them but it is a forgone conclusion at this point.

Not necessarily.
The below quotation is edited to update the correct fatigue penalty.

She will attack with Mentem for a total of 26.
She will defend with Rego for a total of 39.
Her attack against Clement's defense is completely ineffective.
Her defense is 39 against an attack total of 47 (29+18) carried over from the previous round; weakening total of 47-39+1+2=11 .
Her resistance total is 4, which drops her two fatigue level; she's now at -1 for all actions.

((Had we left it as it was he would have had an attack to total of 74 to her defense of 39 which would have gotten me an advantage of 38 which would have ended the certimen :frowning:

As it stand now he will have to gamble to do any damage to her. She can use vis and Clement can not.))

She has initiative, though. Like I said, the best you could've hoped to achieve was a draw.

(( it is a gamble in any case. If she does not get a good attack roll then it is possible that Clement could have only taken a single fatigue level where she would have taken 6+. He blew his attack advantage that he would only ever get once. So he will now have to play defense and hope. Should have gone with Imaginum like I thought :frowning: ))

Mentem attack 0 + 26 + certimen attack (1d10=3) = 29-5 = 24
Rego defense 4 + 24 + 24 +certimen defense (1d10=8) = 60 -5 = 55

Build advanatage

If you want to redo the combat with the rolls, and do it as Clement would've done, realizing he was completely overwhelmed by her first attack, and make a weakening in the first round we would have:
A weakening total of 18+1+2-5=21 vs a resistance of 4, which would be 12, or a loss of 3 fatigue levels giving her a -3 to future actions, and Clement a -5.

Clement would still have to play defense, though, or he risks getting knocked out by her. I'm fine with giving her a -3, rather the minus one. It doesn't affect the second round, as the total would be 29 attack total vs. her defense total of 36.
We'll retcon that she is at -3. That's reasonable.

Now is also an excellent time to pick a school... Given Clement's low speed a defensive school is probably a good one...
I'll wait until you've picked one, but I won't retcon the match to take advantage of it earlier.

I'll leave it up to you. She got a great roll and those are the luck of the dice. She could still lose concentration

Yeah, I thought about concentration checks. I'm fine with it being a -3 for her and a -5 for her and moving on. It's like both sides unleashed with everything they got, and found out that they were better matched than expected. It's a good story.

I like Velitus , Gladiatrix ( which fits Clement) but Hoplomachus may be the best for a defensive fight. Not a fan of Provocator. What do you think?

Well, you have to pick one school of fighting, and that's it. You'd have to work with another.
The Hoplomachus is the school I'd choose with the negative quickness. Velitus is an offensive rather than defensive approach.

Gladiatrix is about uncovering information, which does make sense for a Quaesitor thematically, but rarely can one challenge Certamen when a Quaesitor is conducting an official investigation.

Hoplomachus it is then. Would have made my tactics different but...

Procella adopts a similar defensive posture using her best art to defend, her attack Total of 33
Her defense is an exploder, and so therefore doesn't matter.

Clement and Procella appear to be evenly matched. Procella let lose with a devastating attack, much as Clement did, but in the subsequent rounds of the contest, after not knocking the other one out, it appears that the two are closely matched, or simply playing a defensive game waiting for the first one to fail.

Mentem attack 27 + 1d10=3 - 5 -3 = 22
Rego Defense 4 + 48 + 6 +certimen defense (1d10=8) - 5 = 61

Clement will have to take a chance and flip Rego to attack soon.

Procella's attack is rebuffed by Clement's significant defensive posture.
Clement's attack is ineffective against Procella's defense.

The pair continue to struggle, with Procella holding the figure of Guernicus slightly closer to Clement and unable to move it closer.
