Remind me,
In the enchanting section, a "ring" is restricted to a finger ring, not an earring, nose ring, arm ring, or other sort of ring?
IMO, it gets the bonus to constant effects because rings are often worn constantly, and it's a symbol of the permanent state of marriage. If other rings are worn constantly, they should probably get the same bonus. So I'd say "yes" to an arm ring, but "no" to ear- and nose-rings.
I think OP should ask his troupe rather than us. Whatever feels right to them should be a valid interpretation.
I agree with your premises @neilnjae but I get to the opposite conclusion. An armring is usually loose, and that feels less constant to me. Ear and nose rings are piercing, and even more constant than finger rings, in the sense that they are more cumbersome to take on and off. Hence, I would be inclined to accept the bonus for nose and ear rings, but not for bracelets. Is there a difference between arm rings and bracelets?
There is another aspect of the ring, namely the closed circle, which symbolises eternity. I would be inclined to require that the ring be a closed circle to give the bonus, which is not always the case even for finger rings. This may be difficult to achieve for ear and nose rings, which may mean that I should reject my previous inclination.
Please let us know what your troupe thinks @lvgreen
Given the shenanigans that players seem to get up to with the Circle Target I'd expect that enchanting a large "ring" to deploy effects comes up fairly often. Such as affecting your entire lab by enchanting a ring around its circumference. They would surely expect the "Ring" Shape & Material Bonus to apply.
Is there a qualifier that that the size modifier to the shape of an arm-ring/bangle might be enough to require extra Vis to enchant?
Then again some historical episcopal and signet rings for the finger were uncomfortably large and elaborate.
I tend to consider magic as highly symbolic, thus I enforce the spirit of the rule more than the word of the rule, so "ring" as enchanted item refers in my game to "finger ring". It might be possible that the ring worn by a giant becomes an arm ring or even a crown for a regular human, but if it was initially created as a ring, it will remain a ring for magical purpose.
Also ring (as finger ring) has strong symbolic power, whereas earring or nose ring much less. In fact, ring is a regal symbol whereas nose rings are more slave/herd animal symbols, so definitely not the same kind of shape/form bonus.
Both royalty and slavery are constant conditions, so what's the relevance to the bonus on constant effects?
I was more answering to the initial OP's question, why I would differentiate ring from nose ring, arm ring and so on.
Earring is not ring most of the time, but a broken ring. I would given the bonus for a permanent unremovable ring on ear.
Actually that was not the case on 13th century. The persisting slavery without chance to get free was invented later.
I was more wondering if there was any differentiation.
I mean a ring or annulus shape embodies the Circle Target and/or Ring Duration.
I'd allow any unbroken circle to be a ring in terms of shape: arm band, finger ring, circlet. It might affect their size, and there could be different applications in terms of crossover (a circlet might have qualities similar to a crown, but weaker).
