When Sim was born, his parents ran a tavern and Sim's early childhood was spent mostly helping out. When Sim was 12, the tavern burned down. Luckily (not really) his family was taken in by Mac Coole, a local crime boss, who installed them at another tavern that he that he runs. Sim, and his family, are what you might call simple, and it probably never occurred to any of them that Mac Coole may have actually burned down their business. As is, they figure they owe him and the whole family works out of a sense of debt to the man.

When Sim started to gain some bulk, he showed a talent for dealing with people that were problems at the tavern. Catching the eye of Mac Coole, he was recruited to fight in the local pit-fighting games to help earn back his family's debt sooner. He was a natural and quickly became adept at knocking skulls in the ring. I'm sure he earned Mac Coole a decent sum. Eventually, Mac Coole arranged for Sim to throw a fight in return for which his debt (not his family's) would be 'paid'.

Once Sim earned his independence, he still worked for the tavern with his family - he had nowhere else to go. Besides, there is still his family's debt to take care of. Someone must have been watching his fighting career though because not long after his thrown fight, he was offered a job to join the new covenant by [PC? NPC?], who had seen enough to want to stop Sim being taken advantage of. [PC? NPC?] explained his new role and duties, and Sim is grateful to have direction and has assimilated to his new live rather well. Mac Coole sometimes still asks for 'favors' here and there - for 'old time's sake', and Sim cheerfully abides - after all Mac Coole has always been so good to him and his parents. (This is how his 'favors' flaw manifests.)

Someday Sim might figure out that Mac Coole isn't a friend, but that'll take some doing. He's just lucky that he has new friends and bosses at the covenant that look out for him (he needs it).
