Table Talk - Development

No idea about the wards. I have lost count of so much stuff in this large ranting stage that I dunno what "ritual wards" would stand for, since I talked none about those.... I was referring to personal and circle wards. Your ward thingy was circle as well. No idea about ritual wards here.... I must have lost that bit of stuff here.

I have to say I only skimm lightly over the posts, to get a general idea of what the magi will look like when finished and that's about it. Once finished, I will read each character thoroughly. I love having everybody posting their character concepts and development, but I have to work and other stuff of that kind to prevent being fired, so I do not have enough time to read everything you lot are posting! :stuck_out_tongue:

So no idea about the wards. I like those that we use IMS (that are not my original design, BTW: our bonisagus made that breakthrough at 4 AM in a pub and we liked them), but you are the SG, so do whatever you fancy  We find ours work, but yours can work perfectly fine as well, I guess.

Cheers,

Xavi

In the same boat!!!!

Huh? I just went back and looked at the library again, and the highest Quality is 13. In fact, I don't think a quality of 19+ is even possible under the rules. Where are you getting those numbers?

JeanMichelle, were you using the ArM4 book study rules, or something?

Scott

There is a quality 15 creo book and I think a Q19 animal book.

Ah, true--though I'm pretty sure Q19 isn't possible under the rules, since the maximum level should be Communication + 6. Even if you had, say, a bonus from a Virtue and maybe 3 points from the bonuses available using the optional Covenants rules, you'd need a Com of +8 or something like that to get Q19.

In any case, Marie had multiple seasons of getting 20+ XP's from books.

Scott

I do not remeber the specific Animal book in question, but the highest quality possible is...
3 + Com 5, +3 if Strong Teacher, +1 if you have Mythic Communication, +3 for Well Bound/Well Scribed/Well Illustrated, +3 for resonance & clairificarion,

For a running total of 18 before adding the bonus for a low level.

Here is the full write up of the bbook in question. The high quality is because of the low level. Lodessa was a filia of Bjornaer herself, who was very old when she wrote it.

Dominion Over God’s Creatures
Animal Summa, Level 10, Quality 19
Author: Lodessa of Bjornaer (Com +3, Animal 40)
Features: Well Bound, Well Scribed, Well Illustrated, Glossed, Minor Age
History: This primer is considered one of the Roots of the Arts, and is a famous and widespread text. It was originally written by the venerable Lodessa of Bjornaer in 953 AD. Lodessa had a Magic Focus in Controlling Animals, and any magus that also has this focus can also read this as a Rego Summa.

Ah, OK, I was misreading how the low-level bonus worked.

Scott

Well, I first wanted him to be inhuman, first idea being a Dhampir, but these usually aren't magi, and I didn't want to be buirdened by a dark secret or any tremere association.
So I just took the sidhe template.
The idea is that he's in some way frightening and inhuman (fanged teeths, light green glowing eyes...), but has a very powerfull presence that make people obey and fear him.
The 2 effects somewhat cancel each other out. Like, his appearance gives him -2 to all presence-based rools, his "aura" gives him +3, thus the +1 presence from sidhe blood.

But yes, it's cool to be different^^

Well, you've made an error.

The 40XP/year apply AFTER apprenticeship.
You should design your magus normally (15XP per pre-apprenticeship year, plus the 240 for apprenticeship), and then advance him with these.

By giving him 40XPs per post-infancy year, you're giving him an awful lot more XP than any other character.

Hum... This is unclear, and I am very concerned.

My first idea was that I'd have to "create" my enchantments using either lab texts or my own talents, spending starting vis and seasons on it.

Am I right?

Once more, I apologize for all my shortcomings (Mr. Rhett Butler)

Marie Noris filia Amelie, ex Tytalus

Marie was born into a Nuremberg (German) shopkeeper family. Because of her gift, she was an unpopular little telltale. So everyone breathed a secret sigh of relief when a weird woman took her away. Mistress Amelie ex Tytalus, a rather incompetent yet overconfident generalist started to teach her the arts. Early in Marie's apprenticeship, Mistress Amelie decided to explore the fate of Tytalus the Founder. She didn't succeed of course, but was turned into a woodlouse by a mighty Fairie (is it that what happened to Tytalus?). 9-year-old Marie inadvertently makes a deal with the fairie: She loses her two hands but gets her Mistress back. The damage cannot be undone with any known spell, but Amelie keeps her, because it's a challenge and also because she is grateful for being saved. She's not quite up to the challenge: Marie learns less than a normal apprentice. Towards the end of her apprenticeship, Marie announces that she wants to join the Merinita-dominated Elder Gild, which is a very creative, and typically Tytalus way of giving Mistress Amelie the finger. Master Greenleaf, a good-humoured Irencilla magus becomes her mentor, and uses the gild training to correct Amelie's botched teachings. He also uses his fairie connections trying to find out if Marie can be cured, but the best he gets is the hint that Marie should fight at the side of the knights of Seneca.
Marie passes her Gauntlet by outsmarting Amelie and departs for Catalonia the very next day.
There she sets up a lab and travels Iberia. Once in a while, she gets back to Germany to meet with her mentor.
Marie has only shoulder-long dark brown hair and cunning hazel eyes. Her physique is rather lissom, apart from her thin arms that end in brutal stumps, which spoils the amiable impression. She's not a young girl anymore, but has the confident smile of a woman who has seen worse.

Lab texts for longevity potion (31: -7, Mag Theory 4)
Lab text for Glove of Vigor (Magic Theory 6), Gift of Vigor (ReMe20), unlimited uses, level: 30.

Sigil: unseen hands seem to be involved
Definition: Telekinesis focus. Telekinesis covers all spells that move an object or person (not thought, sensation) that was there before (a stone, person, weapon, cloud; not a Pilum of Fire) by mental control (D: Concentration/Moment, or some other obvious concentration element) along a clearly visible course (not: Leap of Homecoming!) through the air or the water.

New spells:

  • Transported by God's Hand (ReCo(Im)20)
    R: Voice D: Con. T: Ind.
The target (up to size 1) feels like it is gently taken by two invisible hands at the waist and moved about slowly in any direction the caster wants (like rising smoke). This allows the caster to fly, or to grab somebody, lift him and drop him somewhere (a Finesse of 9+ roll is required to drop the target onto something or somebody, modified by the size of the size of the object or person you want to hit. Damage for the person moved and the person she gets dropped onto is falling damage.

Items:

  • Glove of Vigor: An fine brown leather glove for the left hand (man-sized). If the wearer touches another person's brow, they swap their fatigue if the person touched is more fatigued than the person who wears the glove. Marie makes incompetent grogs use this glove to reinvigorate her [Gift of Vigor (ReMe20), unlimited uses, level: 30, 7 pawns of vis].
  • Rowan Crown: The Rowan Crown is a delicate tiara made from Rowan-wood. It is beautifully carved with Rowan leaves, flowers and pornes (berries). Seldom is Marie seen without her tiara. Not only does it protect her from evil magic, and facilitates magic that controls people but it also helps her cope with her disability. If the person who wears this tiara looks at an object and blinks twice, she can move it around. If she loses focus the object doesn't fall, but stays in mid-air. Marie uses this spell hundreds of time every day, and even though she could easily cast it herself, it is more comfortable for her this way. People often think that Marie's eyes are failing because they don't know why she blinks so often [Talisman: Shape – crown, material: Rowan, opened for: control people+3, +4 protection against malicious magic (From GotF p. 33), contains 4 pawns of vis: enchanted for 2 pawns filled by a level 20 effect: ReTe(He)5: Unseen Arm, unlimeted uses +10, +5 maintains concentration].

Yes, you are correct. Note that you can obtain Lab Texts from Yair's Spell wiki (or post them there then use them  )

The starting vis is what you have after all obligations are met, bbut before spending it on stuff.

I have the wiki saved as a bookmark, I forget the URL. Any help?

addednum:

  1. the mastery abilities for Marie are incorrect in her apprenticeship
  2. I forgot to recalculate casting totals (I added Magic Theory in the old version, ups!)

Jean Michelle,

I don't think you'd get Exposure XP's while learning a spell--Exposure is for when you're not learning anything else, I think. I understand that you're not earning XP's when you learn a spell, but you're still learning, and so it's not the same as labwork or doing a job.

Scott

loooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
Laughed out loud there, I missed this one

I really hate this immunity too, which is the main reason why I proposed to use Xavi's rule for personnal wards, knowing that I wanted my character to use wards.

Note that, with this rule, you're trashing a lot of the school of ramius (not sebastian as I wrote before) and the entire mage-knight concept, which relies heavily on personnal wards to engage ennemies in mundane battle.
Now, me (and any ramius) either wait for the opponent to dissipate our wards, or we attack and lose them.

Are you really sure you don't want to use it instead of this?
It appears much more coherent, elegant, and easy to adjudicate

Also, You haven't answered me about item lab texts:

I quote p.163: "Hermetic laboratory activities grant exposure experience". "A character may gain exposure experience in...seasons in which he does not gain experience from any other source." Spells and enchanted items are not experience points!

Yes he does, post apprenticeship that is. You get 2xp exposure from labb work, usually in MT, but it may bbe spent on one of the Arts involved or mastery for the spell.

Mind you, you cannot gain exposure xp in any season you use another source, such as an adventure or a text or a tracher/trainer.

Thanks for the lab texts.

I'll do what I said then, using them for reasonnable variations on basic concepts (like Ignem spells), and creating original ones.

And the wiki:
arsmagica.pbwiki.com/

IIRC, you're right about this.

I must have missed something in societates then. No matter what ward rule I use, if you have a CwaD and you wrestle a demon, the ward breaks.
I will re-read Ramius tonight, but I always felt that only girl Flambeau magi use wards  (just ribbing ya!). Societates also states that an animated skeleton can attack you with a spear and not worry about MR. That is just wrong. An animated sword must penetrate, but if I instead animate a gauntlet to weild the sword, then I am clear? Or if I just animate the hilt and not the blade?

Nope. Spells are labwork. No one ever lears spells unless through Training. All spells, even if you have a text, are original inventions.

Mark

I need to meditate. Give me a copy as she has been modified. I would
rather tell everyone to chill than have you using Diedne
magic. Using Diende magic = "Short Lived Character" around here

Scott

Nooo...she doesn't have literal Diedne magic. But everyone seemed
to agree to using the same mechanics, with the /2 without fatigue as
Innate Spontaneous Magic and the "Focus" as Potent Spontaneous Magic.

!!! I was not paying attention then. I specifically told everyone that I greenlighted the character as she is. I would rather you put it back the way it was, as I totally do not want Potent Spontaneous Magic either. The version I gave you has bbeen playtested by my frein Scott Johnson (aka Newyn of Merinita). I know it works, and I know what to expect.

Your call though. Put together the character as you est feel she should be. I authorize you by the power of my Silver Hammer!
