The late Hilbert ex Bonisagus

"[...] It is fundamental to understand that what people call "the diversity of
magic" is in fact, inexistent. All spells we know, in fact stem from very
few, basic operations. When one throws a ball of flame, for instance, by
using Creo Ignem spell, what happens is that first, a spell that summons
essence in existence. This spell, of course, is not complete by itself: it
ignores the nature of that which should appear. It is also fleeting, because
there is no knowledge to make it last. And therefore, it is not observed.

Then, a spell describing the nature of that which appears is created. Because
the Creo spell has been waiting for such a spell to appear, they combine and
magic which was intended, happens. [...]"
extract from Hilbert's gauntlet summary, magicus atomorum

Hilbert is mostly interested in higher-order magic, that is, spells which manipulate spells.

After some years

Hilbert was born to a Waxchandler from Lübeck. He spent his early childhood around his father's parlour, and listening to conversations with the hanse aldermen, aswell as foreign merchants. This privilege, however, was cut short when he proved unable to keep things to himself. He was instead apprenticed in his father's workshop. While he was quite decent with his hands and did his work properly, no one really liked him. Around the time he reached the age of reason, his father got a visit from one of the guild's business relations, which negociated for Hilbert to be taken as a pupil by a remote scholar. It was a relief for him to leave the solitude of the candler's workshop.
