What the never-ending September has to do with this is a little mystery. In the first years of September it simply was not a problem, since the server would not keep years of history anyway, and even if it did, you probably would not let your client show years of history as unread. Furthermore, most clients would be able to show threads as branching, so that years of history, when you chose to read it, would not be one meaningless and linear stream of posts.

In short, user interfaces have been degrading quite a lot over the past 25 years. We should blame UI developers rather than the lusers.
