I'm not sure you can kill other magi outside of a wizard's war. It would have to be self-defense.

I got the impression they were companions / grogs? Still questionable.

The corebook has 12 "example" starting magi, one per House, with some notes about how they may be customized. I am not particularly fond of them: to me they seem both less capable out-of-the-box, and less interesting in terms of long-term growth, than the average starting magus designed at my gaming table.
