I don’t know, since almost all of italy is coastal, having exploration phases in the form of raids into North Africa to try and get some vis doesn’t seem out of place, especially in the southern half of the country, or with some kind of magical transport, into the tribunal-no man’s land parts of Asia Minor.
There is also the option of getting entangled in real world politics, plus there are some very interesting ancient sites- the Hypogeum in Malta, for example should be very magic rich, and lacunae in Rome which tie back to the Roman empire could potentially be resource intense. These massive treasures are not likely to be lying around for everyone to partake in, but the possibility of lost works, research into ancient traditions, the amount of knowledge that is lying around forgotten could be incredible, all you have to do is try avoiding interfering with the mundanes while they are busy with wars and politics all over the place and don’t tend to be the live and let live type- so they either think you are powerless and try to oppress you or think you are powerful and try to draw you into their intrigues. Because when the pope and the holy roman emperor are plotting at odds with each other they do not take no easilly.
That’s a good point; with magical transport, and ignoring portals, Italy is fairly centrally located to quite a lot of Europe, Africa, and not terribly far from the Holy Land.
I had not seen all these comments here. Was too busy finishing our Ars Magica content.
But I am super happy with it.
One thing I would want to comment: Our setting is not in the 1200’s but in 1492 (The Straight Way Lost) or 1507 (Serenissima Obscura). AND we have changed history a bit after the occurrences in 1492. This is the Magical Renaissance and the world is becoming more magical by the Aumento. So: everything is possible. ![]()
