Wisdom of the Desert: A 5th edition Levant Tribunal project

An adventure about the Muslim scholar teaching young Frederick II (and perhaps in his old age the Order of Hermes) is Sub Rosa #20 Franciscan Doubts.

It's under the Open License, so the answer is almost certainly yes, if it's any good. If the original authors don't put it up for sale, someone else will. (It won't be me, obviously, but given that it is both legal and ethical, someone will do it. I'm rather counting on that for my project β€” if something happens to me and I don't manage to get a final version on sale, I hope that at least one of the patrons will make it available.)

Getting people up to speed on a project and them keeping them working together is a lot of work. I had a rule for Ars Magica books of "no more than four authors", after RoP:M, which almost fell apart due to the logistical problems of coordinating everyone.

One of the theoretical benefits of the license is that you do not need to worry about that. Suppose someone else writes a brilliant covenant that contradicts something in @temprobe's project. And suppose that I love both temprobe's project, and that covenant. I can take both, make edits to make them consistent, and release them. (I should note that I have no plans to do that sort of thing, partly because if I did I suspect that people would start expecting me to produce a canonical version of the open material, and I certainly do not have time for that. But anyone can do it.)

Certainly at this stage of the open project, I would advise people who want to write material to just write it, without worrying about what other people are doing. Once things actually exist, people can worry about fitting them together β€” and the people doing that worrying do not have to be the original authors.

If you need help with anything, like stating creatures / magi, please ask away :grinning:

If it can help, I can ask my colleagues if they can translate :crossed_fingers:

Don't worry David: we all plan to use your starter magi. You're the new Serimita.

(No pressure...)

Ensuring that projects don't disappear from the internet for sure is ethical. And I wouldn't see a problem with someone publishing an alternate version of covenant XYZ, or using a magi for an adventure in the Levant, why not. Actually that sounds fun. But we're also a small community, and how we treat each other as creators is what will make or break the value of the open license. If I publish an alternate 5-page version of Dankmar... I won't do so in the middle of a 144 page Guardians of the Forest re-release with no other alterations. Your patreon was partly a test of how the community would behave, as I recall.

I do appreciate the advice, and yes, I think limiting the number of authors is wise. Too many authors also has the risk of higher inconsistencies. I'm open to submissions, however, and we've begun collaborating with at least one author (whom I'll talk about later :grinning: )

We do have some planned content for Mesopotamia down the road, yes.

This is true, and the reason why I take it to be obvious that I'm not going to publish your work.

However, as creators we should not be assuming or hoping that people will not use the permission we are giving them, including the permission to sell our material without making any changes at all. I think my requests to my patrons not to release the material until it is actually finished are about the most we can reasonably ask for. Given the permissions we give people concerning our material, we cannot expect to keep it restricted long-term.

My question about the community is whether there are enough people willing to pay for a "public good" (scare quotes because we are talking about Ars Magica supplements, not clean air or world peace) to make it viable. Preliminary results are promising.

Anyone publishing under the license should accept that their work will be made available for free download at some point, and that they have given permission for that. Given that, the best way to stop other people making money off your work is to put it up for sale yourself, because the argument that people who are paying for something should pay the creators is one that almost everyone finds very convincing.

To be fair, I absolutely plan to use David's magicians for a thing I have on the back burner to do with a saga set in Cheshire. I won't steal them so much as say "You should buy this other thing!"

Part of the Mythic Europe Magazine idea is to scope out what works as a publication. Different issues may be different lengths or themed vs miscellaneous to just see what support people give.

Feel free to use them however you wish; that's the point of the license. The current versions are first drafts, however, and might well still have mistakes in them…

March 9th update:

What's new:

  • The next step towards the Master and Archmagi version of Hajar has been released. This file should be seen as a progress report - it will be amalgamated with other files later. There are two more steps to releasing the Master's version of the covenant.

Collaboration updates:

  • Antomonio (a Discord user - I'm not clear whether he has an account here), who worked on the Levant revamp in the scriptorium has transfered the material he was working on to us for the purpose of advancing our project. Which elements we will take on at this point is unclear, but we will acknowledge his contribution in the relevant articles where we adapt what he wrote.
  • @Red-Shadow-Claws of Games from the Holy Land will join us to author some Levant material as part of the Wisdom of the Desert content. He has submited his hedge tradition I was talking about earlier for review. Additional content is being discussed.

What the team is working on:

  • Lothindil is working on the Archmagi version of a second Hajar magi - Naadhira.
  • The apprentice and magi version of Aedes Veritatis are essentially complete after a few adjustments. It is missing a small element I asked to be included in the file. Apprentice, magi and maps to be published shortly.

Errata:

  • Hajar greyscale and color maps for the 2nd floor were tweaked and reuploaded as we realised a door was missing. This also means the magi version of Hajar was updated.

What's new:
The apprentice version of the Aedes Veritatis covenant has been released. This one includes a story flaw for one of its gifted residents.

What we're working on:

  • The Archmagi version of Naadhira has been received.
  • The full version of Sharaf has been received as well. It is undergoing edition before incorporation into the Magi version of Aedes Veritatis.

March 23rd update

What's new:

What we're working on:

  • Lothindil is working on the third full magi from Hajar: Hamdi the sahir.
  • She is in her early stage of detailing the social life of Hajar and the companions / specialists.
  • We've done some brainstorming and are planning some additional Jinns for the Damascus regions.
  • I plan to work more seriously on the review of Itzhak's hedge tradition while Lothindil works on Hajar.

Would love some feedback on what we released so far!

It's great! I am very impressed with how rapidly you are getting this stuff out with such high quality. I look forward to seeing Egypt.

April 5th update:

What's new:

  • The Archmagi version of Naadhira ex Jerbiton - a former Transylvanian Tytalus who relocated to the Levant after changing House;
  • The Archmagi version of Hamdi ex Miscellanea - an Hermetic Sahir Seeker. Both will be included in the Archmagi version of Hajar once released.

Non-Levant:

  • Lothindil's medieval heraldic shield generator app is now online. Non-subscribers can access a free sample of the app here. We think heraldic art has value for home campaigns in the ars setting. Master and Archmagi subscribers get the full version of the app, which has a lot more options than the free version. The CC license used doesn't allow for commercial use of the heraldic shields generated, but Lothindil may consider case-by-case requests from subscribers to include such art in open license products for the ars magicka line, if there's an interest for that. Feedback welcome on the app and its use in your home games

Errata:

  • The magi version of Hajar Almaealij has been re-released to fix Naadhira's reputation and twilight scars, which matches what we did with the full magi version. I'm not updating the Stats file for Master since it was a progress report and Masters can access the magi version either way - the fix will be compiled into the Master's version of the covenant when it gets released.

What we're working on:

  • I've given a first thorough read, review and commenting of Itzhak's hedge tradition, the Mashawa Al-Badiya. It will take some time to work with Itzhak on the lore and mechanics balancing, but there's some clear story potential with it. I had given it a first review a year or so ago, which Itzhak had taken into account in this draft, but commenting as a peer and doing a review as an editor doesn't require the same set of eyes.
  • Lothindil has submited two documents touching on the History of the Tribunal to me, and one document touching on the 1220 Tribunal politics. These will feed into future articles touching on subjects such as the Peripheral Code and customs of the Levant. I anticipate we'll publish elements on the current 1220 situation first, as there is a lot more to review in terms of 5th edition canon for material touching on what happens between the tribunal's founding and the 1220 timeline. It's anticipated the first such article will be published in the next few weeks, for Apprentice and up.

April 21st update

What's new:

Errata:

  • Hamdi for Archmagi has seen a correction on Warping. This did not require a correction for Masters.

What we're working on:

  • Work on the Mashawa Al-Badiya hedge tradition is still ongoing. Some sections are finalized. It will take some time before it goes out - there is some balancing to do, and I've requested additional elements and clarifications from Itzhak.
  • Lothindil has started work on a Jinn linked to Damascus.
  • In order to simplify future Jinns, we're working on a checklist of standardized things to be included in all Jinns by Realm, as we find cross-referencing and editing to be tedious.
  • There are some ongoing discussions on an upcoming article on politics to be done prior to publications.
  • I wrote an article on Slavery in the Levant, mostly because I'm unhappy with the Slave and Slave Owner virtue and Flaws from Guardians of the Forest in light of the paragraph in RoP:D as far as how things worked in the local setting as opposed to Europe and what we've researched for our home games. We're mindful the subject is delicate and for now I've shelved the document until I decide whether there's a clean way to deal with the subject without opening a can of problems, or whether we should just deal with the issue on a character-by-character basis or whatnot. I'm leaning towards the second option at this time, with a possible side bar dealing on game mechanics only, rather than writing about the social aspects.
  • Additional magi from Hajar will be published shortly.
