1260:OOC

The character? The character is a girl who fled her noble family for a life of magic and adventure. Didn't want to marry the person they decided on, didn't like all the rules yada, yada. And she did something about it! She became a witch! Not just any witch a Faerie Witch! Anyway there are more details in her thread on that department.

However, we also need the rules to figure out how to modal all that. That said, if you are unhappy with that focus power. I can totally change her focus power to a different set of virtues. (Will change it.) Or I could make a more complete change if someone really wanted.

You talking about the Becoming qcipher as the Merinita who are good at certamen?

There is a line of Merinita that actually have the focus of Certamen like the Tremere do, they're a recent development.

Neat! Now we have two groups of magi with an utterly unproductive magical focus. Hey, did you plan on having your character run the becoming?

The benefit of their focus is debatable, I've used alternate versions of the certamen bonus so that the focus remains open. But considering how far certamen can get you, I wouldn't just throw it out as worthless.

As for the Becoming, haven't decided yet. I'd want to get more power first, because you do stagnate quite a bit once you go through the rituals.

Eh, you don't need to do all of them, and they get harder the more power you get. Especially transforming the Soul. And what stagnation? You can still learn spells, arts and what not. Transforming the Mind I guess is an issue if you want a new ability which can lock you into one place, but transforming the Soul and transforming the body don't cause stagnation. Unless I missed something big...

Once you stop being human, it gets much harder to change and gain experience. Especially if you become a Fae. They are fairly stuck in a story.

I like the Mysteries that he has now, the other Mysteries didn't appeal as much. Now, what I have to do is make some spells that use the Merinita specialties. They could help the Oppida a great deal possibly.

The until duration can be quite cool. Like a cheap enchanted item. Actually a really col trick with the until duration is using it to sustain spells. (ReVi). Now any spell you want can have a permanent extension. And dear God the Aegis can be targeted with one.

Actually no, not the Aegis. Well, not if you meant making a Aegis with Until duration. It's still not well integrated in Hermetic theory, and the description says that inventing one with different parameters would require a major breakthrough.

You might be able to target the ritual Aegis spell with an Until ReVi spell, which would end up being 3 magnitudes higher than the Aegis spell. It seems like a dangerous thing to do to me, since you don't know when the Aegis might fail (between the until condition and the caster dying or going into Twilight...)

The Year and a Day has some appeal for that, in that it's a true year, you don't lose any days (going through 4 Solstices). The real issue (for all of these), even if he could tie an Aegis to it, he's the only one that could logically cast it, meaning it wouldn't be too strong or have a high Penetration. No one else (I assume) would be able to do a Wizard's Communion unless they had Faerie Magic.

Some spells that might be worthwhile (for the Covenant). A bargain spell, to help ensure that it is kept. Bloodline, to aid/tie a family in service to the covenant. Any number of defense spells that affect the roads leading to the place. The Until of course has a ton of applications, Warping could be an issue depending on the target. One that I want to incorporate would be with a duration of Fire, and cast an Animae spell. Basically change a fire into a fiery faerie. It lasts until the fire goes out, and hopefully it has a will to live, so it would try its darndest not be put out. Until works well with Animae magic also. Could keep them loyal.

I was thinking of a until version of sustain the demanding spell. Cast it on the Aegis.

You'd probably want an until condition like "until the underlying spell is dispelled". You CAN have conditions involving a dispel. Its impossible to dispel otherwise. Then just double up on casters and hopefully they won't both pop at the same time. Still its a risk. Of course, normally someone could just repeatedly cast "unravelling the form of vim". It might take a few tries, but eventually you'll get a big enough explosion. (You'll want a spell mastery). If you are really paranoid you could have a Aegis in a waiting spell, so you can throw a temporary one right back up. (The waiting spell should have a trigger of no Aegis.)

Big initial investment for sure, but hey it might save some cash in the long run.

Also fire? THAT'S A FREAKING AWESOME DURATION! Any creo ig spell works great with fire duration. As does Mu Ig. Or both in succession. Or even better when you turn the fire into something. Creo Ig to make a Fire Faerie? Lasts as long as the Faerie does. Yeah its limited, but its awesome for what it works for.

Edit: Does Wizard's Communion require a concentration roll for the caster? It seems like it shouldn't, but I can't find anything explicit for the notion...

With regards to Zoltan's list, I (and Zoltan) fully understand that things will need to be hammered out, we don't expect everything will be agreed to.

This book is a Summa and not a Tractatus right?

By RAW only summae have levels.

That's what I thought.

I should probably come up with a list like that. It will include some "understandings" and the like. (No taking up all my time with writing!)

Lets see what would be a good opener for the explicit writing:

  1. The right to perform mystery rites shall have the same protections as laboratory work or study.
1a) Juno shall be considered part of Eve's magical power.
  2. House Tremere shall have first opportunity to purchase any books, vis or magical items that Eve wishes to sell or gift. Eve may not accept outside commissions.
2a) Magical items shall have standard House Verditius prices.
2b) The price of a tractus, not under and restrictions shall be twice the number of pawns Eve could extract in a season. Tracti or silver may be required instead of vis. In this case a sound tractus is considered to be worth 2 pawns or more, and 15 pounds of silver is considered 1 pawn when accounting.
2c) The price of any books also includes up to two copies provided to Eve. These copies at the buyers option may be placed under the Oath of Calf and Cow for 49 years. Furthermore, any works that Eve writes that are sufficiently similar a magi would find no additional insights by studying the second work are also under the Oath of Calf and Cow for the same time frame. Eve may not sell these tracti or rent them. She may lend them or gift them.
2d) Tracti Eve sells are NOT under the Oath of Calf and Cow.
  3. Eve shall have access to space for a regular laboratory and sufficient funds to maintain the laboratory at normal expense, and pay her servant Juno. Eve will have access to resources to replace equipment in her lab in cases of catastrophe.
  4. Eve shall have access to sufficient writing materials for herself, her familiar and one assistant to write and copy and correspond. They shall have access to a bookbinder, and illuminatior and scribe to complete any writings produced.
  5. A measure of Vis in equal parts with other magi at the Oppida of Heviz
  6. Full access to books and study materials as allowed to full members of the Opidda of Heviz
  7. The right to participate in Aegis castings, and the right of her familiar to participate in Aegis castings that cover her sanctum.
  8. Any books that Eve writes as part of her duties, shall have two copies made. These copies at House Tremere's Option may remain under Calf and Cow for up to 49 years. In addition during this same time frame any works that Eve writes that are sufficiently similar a magi would find no additional insights by studying the second work are also under the Oath of Calf and Cow for the same time frame. Eve may not sell these tracti or rent them. She may lend them or gift them.
  9. Eve maintains all ownership of her existing Vis Sources. Eve owns any vis she personally produces.
  10. Required Original Research Projects shall not require work on effects of more than two magnitudes.
  11. Resources required for required services shall be provided by House Tremere.

Special Duties:

  1. Eve shall maintain a correspondence with [spot for name] by writing at least two reports a month on the status of the Oppidiums endeavors.
1a) These correspondences shall be dictated through a scribe. This scribe shall not be Juno.
  2. Eve shall provide one season of service every 13 seasons. This shall not take her beyond her sanctum.
  3. These special duties may not be constructed to abridge other duties.

What Eve can do that is really cool: Eve has a couple of rare abilities. Namely her writing and those fancy mysteries. Items of Quality allow for fairly large bonuses, non-magical bonuses, to a wide array of abilities. Most interesting to House Tremere will probably be the various "ascendency over the masses type" ones. Not actually magical. No worse than Aura of Ennobled Presence. Her Elder Runes allow her to open huge items, and give a huge bonus to whoever enchants it after her. Not to mention any item she opens will have a nice vis discount and a decent shape and material bonus. Writing is self-explanatory.

The basic understanding is while yes, they could be jerks and chase her out of the tribunal with excessive requests they won't. Eve is running from that. Instead they do get the benefit of Eve's work, but not constantly. Eve will absolutely hide behind Tremere when it comes to handing out blame for why she can't write a commentary for some important magus's summae, and for why she hasn't sold enough toys. There is also the understanding that Eve likes to adventure and get out of the lab. She doesn't really, but she has a history of it, and no good explanation other than "Its fun".

Now my thoughts and logic behind all of this: Ten pawns of vis for an excellent tractus you can copy is a great deal. Plus the free season of service they can get every few years. (Eve expects to be negotiated to fewer downtime seasons.) Eve wants the extra copies because she wants to make sure and covenmates (or Oppidum mates in TV) can benefit from her little library. She also wants a second so she can send it too the Great Library eventually. Its good work and the Order should benefit at some point.

So anything that would horribly insult House Tremere in there? Any tips for clean up? Line one and two are the lines Eve is least willing to budge on. But even then details can be quibbled over. Line one since you know: Driven. Line two since Eve is using House Tremere to hide behind. Yes, ONLY House Tremere was intentional. Yes, including gifts was intentional, I figure at least one arrogant jackass figured it would be an honor to write a book for free. And I do mean just "1" and "2", not "2a-d" or "1a". Eve figures she probably won't get all of the sub-requests, just that it will end up good enough. But hey, shoot for the stars.'

Ooo: I just figured out you can spec magic theory in enchanted items. I changed her specialization in magic theory to that. That okay jebrick?

Not sure how Juno would be part of Eve's power. If the Tremere were to agree, I would think they would need to know why. Ophelia's grogs are part of her magical power, in many respects.

Her plan was to say lab/mystery assistant, and she plays a near essential role in helping copy and scribe. (Presumably Juno is familiar with Eve's shorthand in lab texts.)
