A Strange Serendipity (Winter 1239)

"I've always lived in the woodcutters shed, and mom should be at home now. I've never had a dad. What do you mean how was I captured? I was in town trying to buy some eggs like my mom had told me, and some of the kids were teasing me, like they do, and I was in the middle of convincing them not to do that when suddenly everything disappeared and I was in the next room over there." she points to the door of the room where she was released from the sack. "By the way, where are we, and why was I abducted? I mean I like the food, but my mom will be worried that I didn't come back with the eggs."

It appears that we have a serious situation at hand here.

One which I will deal with latter after work

Umm, I guess I'm not needed here since you guys are just going to talk to each other then? even though Carmen can't speak to nor understand Clotide?

I assumed Selim did as he was asked, but he would obviously be present if he has any questions or comments of his own...

We were just being expedient. My apologies

See, this is the problem. Should I have assumed Rilcheaux would do as he was told in the Surprise Visitor thread? If Selim were a grog, I would totally understand, but he's not. Yes he would have basically asked the same question, but likely worded it differently since the way it was worded he knew he wasn't going to get anything useful regarding where she is from. For example, he wouldn't have asked how she was captured. If you guys didn't want another player involved, you shouldn't have waited around for another player to jump in.

Edit: The other problem is that Selim can't directly translate. He can't just switch back and forth between Clotide's language and Latin, because he doesn't actually know either language. He has to basically have the full conversation with Clotide before turning to Carmen to let her know what he found out.

Selim shrugs, "I have no idea how you got here, that's what I'm hoping to find out, and to help you get back home to your mom. What's your mom's name? And what town were you in trying to buy eggs?"

"My mom is Valeria, and she told me we live in Vila Real." She concentrates for a moment with her brow furrowed "Is this Santa Marta?"

Dude, chill. It wasn't like that. We just both happened to be online at the same time and were taking shortcuts. In my defense, I myself wasn't actually waiting for another player to join in. I was waiting for Silveroak to throw me a grog that spoke Galician. And I was waiting on Solomon. Selim just happened by, and in the interest of trying to move forward I went with it.

And that has me confused. I thought he did, or had Gift of Tongues. Instead he has Faerie Speech, and I have no idea what that does or how it works or anything.
And, truth be told, I as a player am not concerned with immediate information. It will all come out eventually. Mostly, I as a player, would like to sweep past all of this and have Carmen meet with Solomon and hold council with the magi about the situation.
However, Selim can be quite useful in this. For another reason.
Selim. I am leaving the girl in your care. Find out everything about her that you can. Make sure she is well fed and kept comforted. Find out where she lives, and if here in Arans, send a messenger to her parents letting them know where they can pick her up. After we are done questioning her.
I am off to find where Solomon is wandering about.

Sorry, it was one of those days. My frustration was that I haven't gotten to use Selim much (very much my fault I know), so I tried to get him into a story and then he was suddenly shoved to the side. Definitely an overreaction on my part.

It's actually very similar to Gift of Tongues. Basically, once he hears a language spoken, he can speak it. But the problem with direct translation is that once he speaks to Clotide, the only language he can speak is Galician, until someone else speaks to him. If Carmen then asks him a question in Latin, he can respond in Latin, but then he can't talk to Clotide again until she speaks in Galician again. So it's easier to just let him gt everything he can and then relate it.

Selim shakes his head, "No, this is not Santa Marta. We are in a castle near Arans, do you know where that is? Why were the children teasing you?"

An attractive young woman named Maria[sup]1[/sup] that Carmen has seen around the covenant comes up to her, "Pontifex, I understand you are looking for Master Solomon? He is currently in Arans, but we expect him back shortly."

[sup]1[/sup] Maria is the daughter of Alexandrus, Solomon's shield grog, and is 18 in 1239. She's been in the covenant since Solomon (uncle Solomon to her, I just never wrote her up) and is Unaffected By the Gift, has Hermetic Experience and has a Magical Fascination. Her goal in life is to marry a Magus and have a Gifted baby. She's also training to be a shield grog against her father's wishes.

"Because I'm big and have no daddy." She also has the blatant gift, but apparently she doesn't realize that. "I never heard of Arans. Mom says there are a lot of places she never heard of, far away. I guess it is probably one of those. That would explain why you are the only one who speaks like I do." She looks for a moment like she is on the verge of tears...suddenly her glass shatters down to dust, spilling her drink everywhere, and she grabs another roll and stuffs it in her mouth.

OOC: I had her roll (with dice at home) for turbulence- this she wasn't actually using a supernatural ability but finding out she was far from home and didn't know the way back was very emotional...

"I..." he begins when the glass shatters, "It's okay, we'll get you home to your mom. The masters of the castle, like the the woman Carmen are very powerful and they will get you home."

:unamused:
Well how shortly? I have been waiting on him since morning and it is long past noon?
We need a better communication system. And i just had a brilliant idea. It
may be a bit complicated at first, but once it gets rolling it will be simple to build upon. I'll need help. I can farm part of the project out, but I will need lab assistance. Perhaps it is time I found a Familiar. Or an apprentice. Or maybe both.
hmmmmmm......

Clotide smiles "Do you think so? I'm sorry, I had an accident, I think I need a new, maybe a cup?"

Carmen becomes frustrated and goes looking for Solomon.

Solomon leads Lucien back to the barn where Gabriel is waiting, "Gabriel, this is Lucien, he will be joining you as an apprentice." He then turns to the monks, "We are ready, if you still wish to accompany us to the castle."

Selim nods, "I can't promise anything, but I know the masters here are quite powerful, and should be able to get you home. And yes, let's go get you a cup," he says as he leads her to the kitchen.

Remembering what Brother Solomon said, and taking everything the man says very seriously Lucien nods and tries to smile at Gabriel; unlikely to any great effect except to show he's following as instructed by the powerful Brother. Lucien also looks apprehensively at the Monks, hoping they too are anything except brothers from his old home. He's very nervous - Monks with strange powers, learning to control fire, being saved from an endless road...Out of the frying pan, to perhaps another frying pan?

Gabriel looks suspiciously at Lucien. There was something about the other boy he didn't like. He just didn't seem like a fellow you could trust. But then he'd promised Solomon that he'd be good and do what the older man said. So he sets aside his distrust of Lucien and simply nods. "Hello Lucien," he says as politely as he can manage.

The monks, for their part, indicate that they too are ready to go up to the castle.

Solomon leads the small group slowly up the mountain to the castle. It will definitely take a while with Solomon's pronounced limp, so I will leave it up to one of our SGs to decide how long it takes to make it back to the covenant.

(I was hoping someone else would jump in...but)

After a bit of a journey, made even longer by Solomon's pronounced limp that severely slows his walking speed, the group finally makes it to the castle. With a nod and raise of his staff, the grogs on watch open the gate and let them in. Turning to the nearest grog Solomon asks, "Please go find Carmen, I have someone she may want to meet."

He then turns to the monks, "Welcome to our humble home. Could I offer you something to drink," he asks as he ushers them to a receiving room near the entrance.

I really need to pay better attention to threads that don't already involve my characters.

Winter of 1239? Vibria is about to give birth, or has just given birth, to her son, Artur. And it's winter, so she'd be unlikely to be out and about even in the best of circumstances.

Guiverna? She's doing lab work...so she could be out and about for a little study break. And one of the off-duty guards hanging out just inside the gate would be just the thing she would love to study (and be studied by). So, she's there, dressed in something warm and trying to snuggle up against the grog, putting her 2 Occitan (+1 for her Specialization in Seduction, for a total of 3) to good use, with her Parma extended over him if he lets her.

(Per 1 + Awareness (Men) 3 + die roll of 7 = 11)

She spots Solomon and Gabriel out of the corner of her eye and turns toward him,her hand trailing down the grog's arm.

"Good afternoon, my dear," she greets him in Latin. "You're looking rather...delectable this afternoon. I hope you came to see me?" She grins playfully.
