I'm making a spreadsheet of virtues for my own use, and I've reached a point where I have everything laid out pretty decently, but I've run into a problem. While there are a number of virtues that are duplicated almost exactly (Ceremony has been in 4 books, with different flavour text dependent on the topic of the book), there is at least 1 virtue that has different rules text entirely across its two appearances.
"Cursing", for Folk Witches, is a lab activity that targets people through Arcane Connections, and they take a season to prepare. For those who use Holy Magic, it's more like a Form or Technique.
Are there other known cases of this in the books that people are aware of? In the table I plan to just put "(Folk Witch)" and "(Holy Magic)", but if there are multiple cases of this I'd know now instead of having to search and check manually (unless I've missed some, I have the total number of virtues at 762, although this is before deleting duplicates - I'd like to consolidate all the versions of Ceremony, for instance).
The four different versions of the Ceremony ability are quite different in the details. The virtues are not much different, since they just say you get the corresponding ability.
There are also Summoning which appears in several different variants.
We have Goetic Summoning, aka (Spirit) Summoning, we have the Elementalist version of Summoning, which is one ability but three different virtues. And there is (Faerie) Summoning.
Sihr exist in at least three different varieties.
Solomonic Sihr
(Exotic) Sihr
The variant used by the Irish Corrguineach tradition.
With the DE I think the two different versions of Offensive/Inoffensive to [Beings] have been consolidated
There's also the Terrae Cult's Summoning (The Sundered Eagle).
Described to function basically like Goetic Summoning, with the following alterations:
Can only summon creatures with Magical Might (thus is untainted)
Within that category, it can summon any being aligned to Terram
Scouring instead creates Earth Elementals of might equal to half your Scouring total.
It is unclear if you can substitute the Summoning and Magic Lore scores for your Rego & Terram arts for these totals, or if it allows you to take a Terram Spirit (or any Terram magical being?) for a Familiar.
There is another difference: it is not Goetic. As those two things (ReVi substitution and Familiar) are due to Summoning being Goetic, they do not work with this. The necromantic Summoning in LotN, however, is Goetic.
The lack of taint was noted. Far as ReVi substitution goes, was that not due to the Magics of Tytalus being largely integrated into Hermetic Magic and supporting a lot of their capabilities?
"Magi who have studied the Ars Goetia may adapt them to Hermetic magic, and
this is actually a fairly simple conversion, since the Techniques and Forms already
support summoning and controlling spirits with the Arts of Rego and Vim."
We know that Tytalus used the Goetic Arts. We don't know how much of his magics got integrated into Hermetic theory by Bonisagus, but it seems like a reasonable assumption that much of the spirit summoning and controlling parts of Hermetic magic came from him.
This is not a Goetic Art, therefore the special rules for Goetic Arts don't apply. Notice how this is a rule for Goetic Arts, not a rule for how Summoning itself works. It would be a very reasonable OR/Integration thing to pursue, though.
