Aetherius ex Mercere

I don't know if I could ask for help without giving something away about the setting...

I am ready to wait, then :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The following are being added in this version:

  • Adopted some of your formating

Aetherius ex Mercere
durer-self-portrait

Background

  • Aetherius is the eldest son of a redcap father from Fengheld and a mundane mother from Magdeburg he met on a trip. His first few years were growing up in his mother's city, whom his father would visit from time to time, before he decided to marry her and bring her back with him to the local Mercere house. It is on site that his gift was discovered. As a descendent of House Mercere, he was refered to his parens, Xavier ex Mercere of Durenmar, a magi of some experience who soon took him as an apprentice.
  • His parens was a member of the societas merceris - the milvi antiquiti - who had setup shop in Durenmar, feeling the Great Library of the Order was a worthwhile successor to the Great Library of old the lineage came from. His interest in the conservation of books would be passed onto his filii and enable his parens to achieve a worthwhile role in Durenmar in the archives.
  • Aetherius on the other hand, opted not to stay at Durenmar for long. His youth rather drove him to find ancient sites and lost manuscripts that might reveal the wisdom of old.
  • Gauntleted in 1175

Post-Gauntlet background

  • Joined the covenant together with Okeannetis ex Tytalus
  • Has been involved investigating a local lost temple of Mercury
  • Involved with a seeker's guild in Egypt - a group of treasure hunters.
  • Took care of the covenant's mail with the local Mercere House in Cairo and acted as the caretaker of some texts for copying, including a number of texts related to Egypt and Northern african magic lore, Islam and Suffism.
  • Has found a fertility relic at an as-of-yet undisclosed location.
  • Had an apprentice of unknown name who left the covenant after his gauntlet. (Aetherius doesn't know this yet)

Description
Aetherius is of mixed origin, part italian, part german. He keeps long flowing hair and a beard which leaned towards the blond in his youth, would turn more and more brown as he aged. He wears comfortable clothes, compared to the robes of some magi, tending to prefer clothes made out of silk or vellum. He is somewhat handsome, but his reserved demeanor tends to create a barrier with others. He stands 5'7 and is rather lean.

Description: The Ibis is a magical water bird, once venerated by the egyptians as a symbol of Thoth. His first memory was in the presence of a priest of Thoth, suggesting perhaps the ancient egyptian priesthood had a role in birthing, creating or awakening Aetherius' familiar. He has no memories of being bound as a familiar.

List of short-hand unlearned lab texts from previous life:
Leap of Homecoming (ReCo 35), Twinning the tome (CrAn:50), The Transformed Folio (MuAn:35), Hunter’s Lethal Arrow(PeAn:40), Shape of the Ancient Kite (MuCo:40), The Tireless Flight(ReCo:20), Sense of the True Path(InTe:15), Reveal the lingering spirt (InVi:20)

Notes on insight for the potion of creation- a level 25 charged item (CrCo) which will cause any fertile woman who drinks it to conceive a child with the next man she engages in the appropriate activity with, if done within a sun period. The insight was obtained from a grey stone statuette carved to look like a woman with huge breasts and a massive, pregnant belly.

Seasonal materials regarding a lost temple of mercury.

A small jade statue of a scarab beetle found outside of Morocco - uninvestigated but magical.

I've went back and recalculated what the virtues and flaws give:
Vile Surroundings (Free): -2 Health, -1 Aesthetics, +1 Perdo
Spacious: +2 safety, +1 Aesthetics
Specimens: +1 Upkeep, +1 Aesthetics, +1 Vim
Greater Feature - Antechamber: +2 Aesthetics, +3 Experimentation
Lesser Feature - Maps: +1 Aesthetics, +1 TBD
Lesser Feature - Astronomical Equipment: +1 Aesthetics, +1 TBD
Lesser Feature - Mirror: +1 Aesthetics, +1 TBD

Then I added refinement into the safety calculation. Assuming a base size of +2 and no hidden flaws, I come up with +6 aesthetics, not the +4 you are reporting; +8 Safety, not the +6 you reported, and 2 missing specialization points from the lesser features (total 3, 1 of which goes to intellego). Could you please review and clarify before I update my lab stats?

I did appear to forget to enter the statistics for the mirror and atronomical equipment, aesthetic and Intelligo should each go up by 2.
Remember when calculating safety t subtract the occupied size, which is 2.

You're correct on safety. Lab details updated above.

Spring:
Aetherius reads Co16q14 +5 Book Learner / Study Bonus Q 19 * 2/3 = 12.3 xp. I've added 12.

Do you think you could provide the missing details on my familiar?

Is there a reason you're updating my experience points, but not adding the expanded character sheet in the first post?

What do you mean by the expanded character sheet in thi context? Likely the reason is that I am editing multiple characters and juggling other things outside the game as well and didn't notice it needed to be done.

This was added right below the spell section:

The insight was obtained from a grey stone statuette carved to look like a woman with huge breasts and a massive, pregnant belly.

For one thing your "expanded character sheet" proposes powers for your familiar that they do not have.

They are based on the below plus the ongoing mental communication from other posts.

If they are incorrect, can you correct them and provide the missing stats for the familiar?

I will make corrections and append- essentially the enchantments do not cover the divine or infernal realms.

my calculations show you have a lab total of 31 and shape of the ancient kite is a level 40 spell, so you would not be able to re-develop it at this time.

For the summer, I get to 36:
Int +3 Magic Theory 5 + 2 + 1 for spec in Muto Aura 8 which is base lab total 19
Muto 7 + 3 / lower of Animal & Corpus 7

I had planned on 43 factoring in my magical focus in self-transformation forgeting this is a touch spell, and while I should be able to apply it while casting on me, I can't apply it to the lab total.

Reviewing my seasonal activities as such:

  • Summer studying Muto (Q 16 + 3 + 2)
  • Fall studying Corpus (Q 14 + 3 + 2)

This will bring my lab total to 40 and I'll be able to learn the spell in the Winter, unless I'm required to leave my lab.

how were you planning to get the study bonus. There are not a lot of caterpillars in this desert and the one butterfly you know of is a familiar...
not that butterflies are the only possible source of a study bonus, but it is illustrative of the difficulty.
corpus will not be a problem, the covenfolk population is sufficient for the bonus there.

I see at least two good and easy source of insight:

  • The landscape. In a desert, dunes are always changing shape, height and location with the wind;
  • We have a master brewer, if memory serves. Making alcohol and observing the fermentation sounds very much like a Muto inspiring process to me.

Brewing would be more likely to be rego (crafting) or perdo (the breakdown into alcohol), however I think you are correct about the dunes- however the covenant is in a mountain range within the desert which has no dunes, you would need to travel out to at least the oasis in order to get that benefit. Being outside of the covenant's protection for a season might involve risks that could result in a story.

Is there any chance the familiar stats can be completed? The cord strengths are pretty much needed for anything adventure + lab safety, Int is going to impact my lab total (and therefore in which season I do what...), I'd like to be able to advance its skills, and what it's capable of might impact future decisions on lab project...

I am working on it- magical animls can be a bit of a headache to generate, so it will take a little time.
