Alienor Ex Merinita

You know what? Never mind about that spell. I'm just going to go with The Brushstrokes Revealed (same book and page ref), a spell I give so many of my characters but did not bother to give this Im specialist.

Alright, Alienor should be mechanically ready for her approval check. Éléazar is still getting finished.

approved

So can I join the thread with her? Probably best if Éléazar doesn't come around the monks anyway I have a feeling he doesn't keep his beak shut. I'll try and get him completed tonight.

yes

With Éléazar's abilities does he need to pay for his magic Theory out of his starting XP, in essence the time that Alienor spent teaching him merely allowing him to buy the score without the virtue, or does he get the xp based on quality of her teaching (3 seasons of 10 in this case)?

create her as found and then add the training.

Finally getting back to writing up Éléazar, Alienor's familiar and since I can't find whatever paper I wrote down my thinking on his major power I'm starting from scratch. Anyway, this is what I got stuck on.
Phantasmal Flock (CrIm)
Base 2 - Sight & Sound
R: Voice +2 mags
D: Sun +2? I actually would prefer concentration but where he doesn't need to concentrate, can turn it on or off at will. Can I, in essence, use the item creation guideline of "Item maintains concentration" adding one mag to Conc for a total of +2?
T: Group +2, Size +1 (allowing for up to 100 independent bird illusions)
Creates up to a hundred illusory songbirds that are only perceivable to sight and sound.

I'm also somewhat basing this on Phantasmal Animal and that has a +2 mags for direct mental command but I would prefer if he could get away with adding magnitudes above that to allow for semi-free flocking behaviors where he doesn't actually have to concentrate to make them move around but he can direct them as a flock.

Anyway, thoughts on this would be helpful.

edit: Total level with just what is written there and none of the optional things that would increase spell level is level 35.

Is this supposed to be a lesser or greater power (or 2x lesser power?)
+2 is direct mental command, +1 for changing image, which is the difference (for PeIm) of being invisible while standing still vs being invisible while moving.
so it looks fine up to the question of directing the flock, and the question of duration. The enchantment concept is not an option, but you could have a version of maintain the demanding spell and make your illusory flock concentration duration, which would give you an extra point for mastery...obviously you would need to build the personal variant on maintain the demanding spell...

It's a major power. As it is I'm going to need to spend a bunch of Mastery to get the Might Cost down because wasting almost half my might points on a power that doesn't actually do a whole lot...

None of the CrIm spells have the +1 for changing image but the +2 for direct mental command is included in the 35. Or are you saying a further magnitude for changing image would allow for the flock behavior thing?

Also, I'm only asking these things because while it's designed similarly to a hermetic spell it isn't one.

what I was saying is that +2 gives you direct control, +1 allows for automatic natural behavior- for example a pre-determined flight path for a flock. if you are using +2 anyways the +1 is not required.

Cool, so this is what I'm going with (not gonna bother with the concentration mumbo jumbo).

Phantasmal Flock (CrIm)
Base 2 - Sight & Sound
R: Voice +2 mags
D: Sun +2
T: Group +2, Size +1 (allowing for up to 100 independent bird illusions)
Other +2 mags for direct mental command
Creates up to a hundred illusory songbirds that are only perceivable to sight and sound.

okay

If I gave Alienor's familiar the Careless with Magic Theory flaw does that apply to Alienor's MT rolls when he aids her in the laboratory. I am actually hoping it does because otherwise it would be a cheaty non-flaw and I would not take it.

You roll MT when trying to gain Insight, if I remember correctly. Are there any other magic theory rolls aside from random adventure rolls?

Experimentation.

Experimentation

It's not an actual Magic Theory roll, is it?

I think it applies. And Alienor must experiment if she wants to use her positive sympathy in the lab or if her negative sympathy is relevant.

Well, I guess silveroak will make a ruling, but while your risk factor is dependent on your MT, it is a simple die for the added Lab Bonus benefit from Experimentation, and a stress die in the Experimentation tables, not a MT roll.

Uh oh, Faerie Magic extra botch dice? Interesting times ahead.

you get full benefits and flaws from any laboratory assistant.
