Ancient History (Spring 1242)

Meanwhile, across Paris:

"You know, it will work with an arcane connection," Lucas replies. "I'll grab a chip from a building in the alleyway across the street." He pauses and adds, "this is getting very close to the scrying prohibition in the Code. But as I recall, that'a limited to scrying on 'legal' affairs, not illegal ones. If they really are engaged in a crime over there, then going in invisibly should be okay.

"Just give me a diameter to rest from a spell, then five more diameters to check the place out. If I'm not back by then, start planning a rescue. "Okay, I'm going silent now ... I hope."

A diameter later (having recovered his breath), Lucas flies away from Vibria and Rilcheaux and over to the alleyway by the house. There he cuts a stone off the wall as an arcane connection, and flies up and over the wall and into the house's courtyard. There he begins to peer into the windows. The windows to the garret are all shuttered and he can't see anything in them. There are two rooms on the second floor, the back room has a bed and a table. An elderly gentleman working at the table on some papers. Lucas can't see exactly what the papers say from the angle he's at. The front room has two men in it - soldiers by the look of them - asleep on two of a number of sleeping pallets laid out on the floor. The regular furniture in the room is pushed to one side, leaving the impression that this is a temporary arrangement. Downstairs, there are likewise two rooms, the rear being a kitchen with another soldier in it, and the front room being a main hall having two soldiers in it.

Lucas returns to the room with the sleeping men in it and teleports inside, making no sound thanks to his spell. He looks around for a few moments, seeing nothing of particular interest. He heads down the gallery to the back room, but finds the door closed. Taking a moment, he heads up the stairs to the garret, flying to make sure he doesn't step on a creaky stair. At the small landing on top, he notes that the door has a lock attached to it, with no sign of a key at hand. Curiosity gets the better of him, and the magus casts another spell to open the lock. Quickly he slips in and closes the door behind him.

It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness, the only light being from the cracks in the shutters, but after a moment he can see that there is a woman tied up on the floor. Her clothes are dirty, but fine, indicating some kind of status. She looks up at the door but says nothing, Lucas can see now that it's because she's gagged. Looking back at the door, Lucas makes a decision. He takes a splinter from the floor and heads back outside, closing the door and locking it up again. Then he silently teleports back inside.

He allows his eyes to adjust again and moves over to the woman. Bending down, he whispers, "I'm here to help you. Don't make any noise. I'm going to take your gag off. Please keep your voice down. The men are still downstairs." Then he removes the gag.

"I don't know who you are," she whispers back, apparently unconcerned about talking to someone who's invisible. "But you have to get me out of here. Those men are only keeping me alive for what I know. Once they get it by other means, I have no doubt that they'll kill me."

"Let's start with who you are," Lucas replies, starting to untie her.

"My name is Flavia," the woman replies. "I uncovered some very important information that I was trying to get to some friends of mine when I was kidnapped and transported here. The men below took my notes, which I thankfully keep in code. But they have some kind of scholar trying to decipher my notes and recreate my work. My life can be measured in the time it takes for him to do that."

"If your friends included Santiago, then have no fear. He learned of your disappearance and sent us to find you."

"Oh, thank God," Flavia gasps. "You have no idea how happy I am to hear that." Then her eyes narrow. "Unless this is a trick," she says. "I wouldn't put it beyond them to try and fake an escape to get me to talk."

"We'll worry about talk later," Lucas says. "For now we focus on escape. You can keep your secrets until you speak to Santiago personally."

But before they can continue, there is a footfall upon the stairs. Slowly someone climbs to the garret and comes to the door. Lucas quickly arranges the ropes so they look like they're still binding Flavia and puts the gag back on. Then he moves over and hides behind a few boxes.

The lock turns and the door opens. One of the soldiers from downstairs looks in, scans the room, and looks at Flavia. Seeing her there and still apparently tied up, he closes the door and locks it behind him, marching down the stairs again.

As soon as the footfalls end, Lucas flies back and removes the gag again. "We need to get you out of here, and quickly. What spells do you know that would be of use?"

"I'm not sure there are any I could cast here. I've tried several while I've been tied up. But without incantations, they're too much. And if I try incatations, we're discovered."

"True. Best if we can get you out of here without alerting them. You're too heavy for me to carry in your present form. But if you'll let me shrink you, you ought to be light enough. Will you allow that?"

Flavia thinks for a moment, then nods.

Lucas quickly casts another spell to shrink Flavia and her woolen gown to the size of a small child. Her cotton chemise causes some trouble, as it remains full size. But that's quickly tucked in and kept out of the way.

"One more spell," Lucas adds, "just to try. I'm not sure it'll work." As it turns out, it doesn't work the first time, but does the second, rendering Flavia invisible.

"Let's go," Lucas says, opening the window and the shutters and feeling around until he grabs hold of the shortened maga. "Before someone comes back." The two fly out the window, stopping only long enough to close the window and the shutters, before they head off and away.

Meanwhile, back at the rendezvous the five diameters have passed without any sign of Lucas returning. Vibria and Rilcheaux are left to plan accordingly.

Lucas will try and cast Cloak of Silence on himself. His CT is +16 (Base) -12 (Aura) +1 Exaggerated gestures = 5 vs target of 20.
Casting check for Cloak of Silence: 1D10+5 = [9]+5 = 14; success, Lucas loses 1 Fatigue level.
Lucas then rests for 2 minutes to regain the Fatigue level.

Lucas casts Wizard's Leap to get into the house. His CT is +19 (Base) -12 (Aura) +1 Exaggerated gestures = 8 vs target of 15.
Casting check for Wizards Leap: 1D10+8 = [8]+8 = 16; success

Lucas casts Key of Theodorus to open the lock. His CT is +19 (base) -12 (Aura) +1 Exaggerated gestures = 8 vs target of 10.
Casting check for Key of Theodorus: 1D10+8 = [4]+8 = 12; success

Lucas casts Wizard's Leap to get into the garret. His CT is +19 (Base) -12 (Aura) +1 Exaggerated gestures = 8 vs target of 15.
Casting check for Wizards Leap: 1D10+8 = [2]+8 = 10; success; loses 1 Fatigue level

Generic check for bad luck: 1D10 = [6] = 6 (high is bad); that's good enough for a standard check on the prisoner.

Lucas' Stealth check: Stealth (sneaking) + Dex check: 1D10+2 = [5]+2 = 7
Goon's Awareness check: Awareness + Per check: 1D10+3 = [3]+3 = 6; fail; whew!

Rest for the balance of two minutes to get back that level of Fatigue.

Lucas casts Preternatural Growth and Shrinking to shrink Flavia down to size -2. His CT is +25 (Base) -12 (Aura) +1 Exaggerated gestures = 14 vs target of 15.
Casting check for Preternatural Growth and Shrinking: 1D10+14 = [6]+14 = 20; success

Lucas will try and cast Cloak of Invisibility on Flavia. His CT is +16 (Base) -12 (Aura) +1 (Exaggerated gestures) = 5 vs target of 20.
Casting check for Cloak of Invisibility: 1D10+5 = [3]+5 = 8; fail, Lucas loses 1 Fatigue level.

Lucas will try and cast Cloak of Invisibility on Flavia again. His CT is +16 (Base) -12 (Aura) -1 (Fatigue) +1 (Exaggerated gestures) = 4 vs target of 20.
Casting check for Cloak of Invisibility: 1D10+4 = [9]+4 = 13; success; Lucas loses another Fatigue level.

Originally I'd thought this plan was doomed to failure because the remaining magus has Second Sight. But then I realized that his Second Sight is magical, and also suffers a -12 to the check for this Aura.

It's hard running a scene with your own character like this. But I tried to both do what he would have done and react how the bad guys would have reacted.

"So we know there is another wizard inside, and they are prepared against my charms to look away unless we hold their head to face me. The charms have the advantage that they are largely unimpaired by the aura since they do not have any penetration, but also will not penetrate any supernatural defense, and can only compel forgetfulness and extract information, which is not exactly usefull at this point. Bernard may have been usefull at raiding the house without being noticed, but is apparently on other business. I could serve as a distraction, and I have established a cover for Citgo as a neighborhood cat belonging to a wealthy gentleman, so he is less likely to be harmed if he is found inside the house. I have arranged for the basket to which this is an arcane connection" Rilcheaux holds up the piece of wicker "to be delivered in the morning, though it sounds as though we cannot wait that long anymore. I really should remember to prepare a sleeping decantation for use in prohibitive auras in the future."

Striking with his sword at the figure who just appeared, his intent is to (a) strike to harm him so he cannot easily escape, and (b) get a blood AC from the target (excellent Toledo long sword: Init: +4, Attack +15, Defense +10 (+13 with buckler), Damage +8).

Diego is also invisible, so this foe probably won't see it coming, and he's not afraid of Roberto probably using flame as he trusts his Parma in this aura.

  • Init roll: 4 + 4 = 8,
  • Attack roll: 9 + 15 = 24,
  • Defense roll: 2 + 10 = 12,

I would have killed you already if that is what I wanted. And you take me to literally. Just "pretend" to be sleeping and that this never happened.

Well, That escalated quickly...

  • Init roll: 1d10=8 + Quick +1 = 9
  • Brawl roll to Touch with a punch 1d10=7, + Dex +1 & Brawl 4 (fistfight) = 13
  • Spellcasting roll: ReMe5 Sandman's Touch, spending two Fatigue Levels for Life Boost 1d10=3; plus Sta +1, Rego 10, Menten 5, Life Boost +5 (x2), Words & Gestures loud & proud +2; = 28, minus Aura penalty (-3?, which is an equal penalty to his resistance), so I am at 25. Minus level 5 equals 20, plus Penetration 2 for final total of 22.

Roberto does not know what Diego is up to, but Diego will see the results before his action and may want to hold off on whacking the guy.

Yea, this situation was always a ticking time bomb. The real question was when it was going to go off. I'd decided a while ago how many exchanges between you and the soldier it would be before he returned.

BTW, did Diego actually have his sword out? I looked back over the past few pages and didn't see anywhere that you posted Diego drawing it. Or can you draw and attack in the same round in ArM5? We'll move forward, but I was curious about that.

Roberto leaps to action first, before the returning magus can act. He strikes out with a blow that will deliver a sleep spell, but the man just barely backs away from it. Unfortunately for him, he backs right into a sword blow from Diego.

Diego strikes from hiding, easily scoring a hit, though the man's armor takes much of the blow, leaving him with barely more than a scratch, but leaving Diego with a drop of his blood.

Then the man laughs. "A fair fight I would take," he says. "But two against one?" He seems to ignore the fact that he has a soldier with him, speaking only of magi. "That's hardly fair. I expected better of you, Roberto. I look forward to the time when we can meet under more favorable terms. Oh, and should you think of following me?" He shakes his head. "The moment we see one of you coming anywhere near the house, Flavia dies." He smiles. "Oh yes, Santiago's friend Flavia is our 'guest,' and your behavior is all that guarantees her life." Then with a mock salute, he quickly casts a spell and disappears in a BAMF of imploding air.

Meanwhile, the soldier looks agog. He had clearly been waiting for the returning magus to be his salvation. Now he's been abandoned? "That bastard!" he cries out. "That god damned bastard left me to rot!" He takes no offensive action, but doesn't drop his dagger.

All is not over yet, however. Diego catches a flash of movement from the top of a nearby building. At the same time he receives a mental communication from Alonzo.

Diego, a man wearing a chain hauberk just appeared on top of a building next to the one you're in. He appears to have a minor wound on his arm. Shall I keep him under surveillance?

Magus initiative: Initiative: 1D10+1 = [2]+1 = 3; You clearly caught him flat-footed.
Magus Defense: 6 (Brawl: dodge) + 1 Quickness = +7 = Defense: 1D10+7 = [7]+7 = 14
Casting check for teleportation spell: success (hidden roll)

Soldier Intitiative: Initiative: 1D10 = [10] = 10 = 0
Botch Check: Botch check: 1D10 = [7] = 7; no botch
Soldier Defense: Defense: 1D10+7 = [2]+7 = 9

I couldn't see anything in the rules about Defense dropping when you are attacked by surprise. Is there a rule I'm missing?
Diego's Attack: 24 (Attack) - 14 (Defense) = 10 + 8 (Sword base Damage) = 18 - 2 (Sta) - 6 (partial chainmail) - 3 (Doublet of Impenetrable Silk) - 3 (Tough) = 4 = Light Wound

Roberto's Alertness Check:Alertness + Per: 1D10+2 = [2]+2 = 4; fail
Diego's Alertness Check: Alertness + Per: 1D10+5 = [6]+5 = 11; succeed
Alonzo's Alertness Check: Alertness + Per: 1D10+8 = [9]+8 = 17; mega-success

Oh, and I swear I didn't think of him threatening Flavia's life until just today. As he was backed in a corner, it just seemed the thing to do.

The threat changes the game :smiling_imp:
I will roll dice later after work. But may I have the opportunity for a fast cast to interrupt his departure?

Yes, he's a bad man.

Alas, this is the same round that Roberto made his attack. The magus simply had a lower initiative roll than him. So Roberto has already taken his action.

I'm not sure what the rules are for drawing a weapon in Ars and don't think it has concepts like ready actions or mods for drawing weapons as partial actions. He probably shouldn't get his Dex or Qui in defense but it's all good.

However Diego didn't have the weapon out and I was assuming that he could draw and strike in the same action, potentially further limiting his Init.

"He's on the roof!"

Thinking Alonzo mentally "Yes, as much as you can. He's very dangerous."

And he wipes the blood into a kerchief, "Only temporarily escaped, we have a connection to him now."

(unless Roberto jumps up to the roof or his action changes this: )
"Yes, your untrustworthy friend has left you to us so drop the blade. You knew he would return in thin air, which would have been useful to us too. I give you this one chance to speak plainly and assist us, or do I need to melt that dagger to slag, and you with it?"

Things are moving pretty quickly, so I want to go ahead and mention that I have 8 fortune points that I am looking to spend aiding in capturing this mage.

Don't you have to have a character there to spend fortune?

Fast casting does nit interrupt nor is interrupted by normal action.
However, i wanna take a look at the math. I believe i would have hit him by spending condidencem

My bad, you're right. You can fast cast something on him. And you can spend confidence on the first attack if you want. I should have asked when I saw it was so close.

You have to have a character in the adventure, it doesn't say in the scene- I will spend fortune to ensure the fast casting works... I can spend up to 8 at a time (well, the first time...)

Yes, players can spend Fortune on each other. But I also had another idea, and in the spirit of Troupe style, I ask you and others for advice. I could do the Confidence thing or try a fast cast.
However...
It may be more exciting to have a roof top battle and a chase accross Paris.
If I didn't spend Confidence, I never touched the guy and thus never cast that spell. Still at full reserves.
So, Roberto sees a rag picked up off the nightstand by an unseen hand. Does that work? Diego wipes the bit of blood off his sword and shouts that the guy is on the roof. Roberto remembers the threat against the girl. His face twists into an angry scowl.
Give me the rag. I'm going after him!
Is the other roof in range of Wizard's Leap? I would presume so. Fifty paces is half football field. More if you use the Roman pace instead of a yard (I use Roman five-feet paces, many Ars gamers use a yard as a pace)

It is definitely within the range of Wizard's Leap. He's less than 30 paces away.

Presu.ing Diego hands him the blooded rag...
Ininiative 1d10=9, Quick +1 = 9
Cast Wizard's Leap: 1d10=8, +Casting Score 20 = 28, -3 Aura = 25, -15 !evel =10
Fast Cast Lancea Magica
Fast Cast Speed: 1d10=2, +1 Quick, +4 Finesse (3, speed)
=7 (or more if Confidence is needed)
Casting Total: 1d10=1,
Exploder: 1d10=5, =10
-10 Fast Cast, +10 Life Boost (x2), +2 Words & Gestures, -3 Aura, +1 Stamina, +6 Perdo, +5 Vim, +3 Mastery
=24, - Level 15 = 9
Plus ((Penetration 2 + Pen Mastery 3 = 5, times (1, +2 for blood?) = 15

More if Confidence is spent
Unravelling Roll: 1d10=5, +25 (Level+10), +9 (three times Mastery score for Unravelling Mastery)
Equals an Unravelling Total of 39
versus 5xParma, enouh to bring down a score of 7.

Confidence and Fortune will be spent liberally if needed for success in any of these rolls.
I am ready with a follow up second Fast Cast (at -6 penalty), But I shall await your reaction to this series first.

As Diego is still under the effect of the flying spell he casts a Leap to get to the roof. Otherwise he teleports outside the window and flies up.

Edit: scratch that, he'll teleport to his familiar instead, then see what he sees. That's faster.

Wizards Leap casting check - ReCo15 vs CT14 -3 aura +roll = roll.coyotecode.net/lookup.php?rollid=130269] 2
+ 11 = 13 so he spends a fatigue. Success. Then up to the roof, probably a round or so behind.

This makes my head hurt. I think I have it right. Please tell me if I've messed something up.

As I understand, we're on to the next round. So initiatives and Fast Casting totals matter a lot. The bad guy's going to try and take some action, and will Fast Cast himself if he sees Roberto arrive. So, as I see it, if the bad guy wins initiative, he gets his action off before Roberto teleports in, otherwise Roberto arrives first.

Initiative: 1D10+1 = [6]+1 = 7
Roberto goes first. He teleports in and sees the enemy magus. Now on to Fast Casting.

We'll have both of your Fast Casts go off simultaneously, since nothing addresses what happens when two people try and Fast Cast at the same time.

Fast Cast Speed: 1D10+4 = [1]+4 = 5
Multiplier: 1D10 = [7] = 7 = 18; beats a 9

You both met the Initiative requirement, so they both go off.

Fast Cast Lancea Magica +45 (PeVi with focus) + 2 (Sta) + 2 (broad gestures and loud voice) - 3 (Aura) -10 (Fast Cast) = +36
Lancea Magica: 1D10+36 = [8]+36 = 44; success
Pentration = 44 - 15 (spell level) + 4 (Penetration plus specialty) + 1 (Penetration mastery) = 34; penetrates Roberto's Parma
Unravelling Roll : 1D10+25 = [8]+25 = 33 + 9 (3 times mastery score) = 42; drops an 8. Robertos Parma goes down

Roberto's Fast Cast of Lancea Magica also takes down the enemy's Parma as well.

Second Fast Cast (done simultaneously with Roberto's second round):
Fast Cast Speed: 1D10-2 = [9]-2 = 7 + 3 (Confidence) = 10; success
Multicast The Wound that Aches (PeCo 20):* +28 (base) + 2 (Sta) + 2 (broad gestures and loud voice) - 3 (Aura) -10 (Fast Cast) = +19
Wound that Aches: 1D10+19 = [3]+19 = 22
Penetration = 22 (CT) - 20 (spell level) + 4 (Penetration plus specialty) + 1 (Penetration mastery) = 7
Wound that Aches: 1D10+19 = [9]+19 = 28
Penetration = 28 (CT) - 20 (spell level) + 4 (Penetration plus specialty) + 1 (Penetration mastery) = 13
Wound that Aches: 1D10+19 = [4]+19 = 23
Penetration = 23 (CT) - 20 (spell level) + 4 (Penetration plus specialty) + 1 (Penetration mastery) = 8

Those should all penetrate Roberto's 5 Corpus defense.

Roberto takes three Minor wounds.

    • Similar to The Wound that Weeps only it's a Medium wound.

But Roberto's second Fast Cast takes place at the same time as the enemy magus', so he can attack without penalty.

Everything happens in the blink of an eye.

The enemy magus appears on a nearby roof. Roberto quickly grabs the bloodstained cloth from Diego and teleports to follow. The enemy magus seems taken aback by Roberto's arrival, but recovers almost immediately. Then the two magi face off from each other and both rapidly cast a spell to try and catch the other one off-balance. The spells go off nearly simultaneously, and both suddenly realize that they are without the protection of Parma Magica.

Not hesitating a moment, the enemy magus fires off another quick spell, or rather array of spells. Immediately, Roberto suffers three terrible wounds, one on his left arm, on on his left side, and one on his right leg.

But even as these wounds open, Roberto gets off his own counter-attack, seeking to reply against the enemy magus in kind.

As I wrote up the enemies for this encounter, I wanted someone who was a match for Roberto. (Though he's Tytalus rather than Flambeau.) I was taken aback with how much Lancea Magica is a combat ender. Once you get that off with a magus opponent, the combat is essentially over. It made me wonder why every magus doesn't have the spell mastered and fast cast it the first thing in any fight. It also made me decide that the main bad guy would be someone with a focus in dispelling magics. Of course, even with that, I don't think the guy really has much of a chance. Maybe if it was one-on-one. But with Diego batting cleanup, he hasn't got a chance. Two against one is hard to deal with in ArM.

BTW, running this I see that with Fortune in addition to Confidence, PCs have an advantage that enemies can't match. Roberto is essentialy guaranteed a third Fast Cast with the payment of Fortune, while the bad guy would be hard pressed to make another Fast Cast roll at -12.

I think that means Roberto has casting action left and then Diego arrives at the end of the round?

Didn't Diego teleport to his familiar this round?
