Animals of Mythic Europe - redone

Ok, so I have been seriously thinking about updating the Animals of Mythic Europe pdf.
Now, due to the OL, I need to release it under that license, so that means several things:

  1. The cover has to change. I've been in touch with Atlas Games, and since their covers aren't released under the OL, I cannot use the existing cover, which was done in the likeness of the AM line.
  2. I have seen a few cases where animals statted in the AM line have problems with their stats. In some cases, it's Size, and in some it's the application of Virtues, mostly in the case of Increased Characteristics in the case of larger animals. My plan is to keep the official stats, but to go over every animal stat, and make sure they are correct, and that Improved Characteristics is applied correctly.
  3. While the 30 for November seems to favor me doing 30 magic animals, at the moment (the ruined/abandoned covenant was leading before that), I will be considering adding some new animals. Probably not 30, but at least some.
  4. As an OL product, I will be putting it on DriveThruRPG, but I haven't decided yet whether to put a price on it, or do it as PWYW.

So, what I want from this wonderful community, is what are your thoughts on the points above, and if you have any animal that you want/need stats for, let me know in the responses.
This isn't my first priority project, but it is coming up.

Cover: Corner a divine animal, an infernal animal, a magic animal, and a faerie animal.

Even though you're really just doing mundane animals.

If you're feeling ambitious, include some variations representing the realms.

I might do another project with all manner of creatures of Might, but the Animals of Mythic Europe shall remain only for mundane animals

I would genuinely appreciate stats for a Nightingale, and other small beasties.

What other small critters did you have in mind?

I would quite like a mammoth, as I am given to understand they had not gone extinct by the time of the Pyramids, so could possibly exist in a regio somewhere in the Baltic.

And I guess some stats for for the West African Forest Elephant (star of Hannibal's army) would be nice as well.

I don’t believe I’ve seen a badger in the books, so that would be very nice, other small birds like the nightingale would be interesting given how common they are at this time in Europe. Beyond that I’m mostly interested in what Mythic folk would call vermin: mice, starlings, and the like, although I do believe a mice swarm was started out in the Rhine book.

And I might not have the most up to date copy, but do you have Butterfly, Dragonfly or Hornets?

An arctic fox might be an interesting variant and Reindeer, Elks and Moose I think are all within Europe at the time, as would be Jellyfish (lots of subtypes there..)

Ooh, very nice. I remember seeing a couple of things where their stats were too low from not getting the bonus points from Improved Characteristics when they're big.

Some things have 1+ Dead health bands instead of 1/2/3/4/5+ Dead, but I think they're meant to be special cases.

regarding the health levels, the smaller the animal is, the less health levels it's got.

RoP: F, p. 49 is where you want to look.

Thank you for quoting RoP:F, I dislike that book so I rarely check it for stuff so it doesn't stick in my mind, I knew 1+ Dead was written somewhere, but couldn't find it to find the contradiction to other material.

ArM5 core pg. 171 and DE pg. 394 both have a table that says "-4 or less" and then the bands are 1/2/3/4/5+, and HoH:MC and DE both have "decrease the damage range for each wound level by 1 (minimum of 1). The Squirrel in LoM pg. 45 is Size -7 and is 1/2/3/4/5+, not the 1/2+ that RoP:F suggests.

Good to know I wasn't mad and hadn't imagined it, and also you hadn't made a mistake, just chose which rule to go with!

Non-magical versions of dragons, useful as base templates for constructing supernatural ones.
Marine animals: Dolphin variants, whale variants, electric rays, Ocean Sunfish, lobsters
Great auk
Caucasian Bison

A great resource. I'd advocate for "Wolverine" (a North American term, as I understand it) being rendered as Gulo "Glutton"...in fact, I miss the Book of Mundane Beasts' Latin naming convention.

I did one. We had a Bjornaer who had this as a heartbeast.

Ok, so, am starting to work on the updated Animals of Mythic Europe, and as I mentioned, the cover had to be changed, so this is the new cover I've worked up

To me, the cover looks a little like a children's book.

Taking Einauge's concern to heart, and those who liked his comment, I present to you a different version

I think that it is more about the stock image animals looking a bit cartooney, rather than the layout.
