Ankoydes doctrinae Bjornaeris

I've been invited to play by jebrick, and am starting work on my character. I've a copy of Against the Dark (and have even read it, once), so I've a passing familiarity with the Tribunal.

I've also looked over the basic threads (the announcements and a couple of the early ones from when the saga first started).

My character idea is basically a rehash of my character from the failed Legacy of Rome saga, an ursine Bjornaer who was originally with an historical bent and Terram skills.

What I'm leaning toward with Ankoydes now is someone more Hoplite-ish, with military and combat abilities. While I can't really see him being Fae-oriented, I might be able, once he joins, to put some thought into weaponizing them. ("Quick, Jenkins, launch the sylph drones!")

Does this sound like something the covenant would need/want?

Also, I have a couple of questions about character design/advancement for him.

  • I would like him to be at a disadvantage during Winter (if not actually hibernating). Cyclic Magic (Negative) says that "The length of time during which you are at a disadvantage must be equal to the time when there is no penalty." Winter is normally only three months (give or take). Would balancing this out with, say, Cyclic Magic (Positive) for the summer (or spring) months so that there is three months with a -3, three months with a +3, and six months of no effect, balancing out to a net null effect, work? Or would just taking the Cyclic Magic (Negative) be okay for reflecting the bear self? Or is there a third option?
  • Ankoydes is married, with the True Love Story Flaw (probably Major, since his wife is a muggle). He obviously would have wanted to get her a Longevity Ritual when the time had come. Would this be simply a season or two of his time (and whatever Vis paid out of his advancement), or would have he gotten someone to do it for her? (I'm not sure what his CrCo LT would be, but I don't know if it would be 50 like Redcaps get.

I do not mind playing with the Cyclic time frame a bit for a concept.

Laterala ( the aedile) would not mind some combat oriented magi. We would have to think how it would work with JL's character ( Ophelia) who is a hoplite in the Tribunal.

For LR. Your magus will earn vis at 2p per year every year past gauntlet. If you work in anothers lab the vis salary is as follows - First 10 years past gauntlet 3p per season. second 10 years will be 5p per season and the 3rd 10 years will be 7p per season.

Just noticed we both have bearish characters. Strange coincidence. Any shapeshifter vs Bjorn issues?

We ( playing group) will have to work this out. I do not want to prevent a player from making a character but I ( and therefore the Tremere) do not need to bring in two magi who will fight each other all the time.

I don't think Arktos would be very prone to mind Ankoynes at all, but just mind his own business. Perhaps they would have to somehow convince the Tremere that they won't mess with each other.

Information: Ankoydes is of Clan Sirnas, the Protectors. I envision this being exhibited in his desire to protect the Order against hostile magi and other forces (such as Dark Fae, nobles, and the Church, where they are bound to harm the Order, as well as against those members of the Order who have turned against him), to protect his family and loved ones, and to protect mundanes. I see him acting much as the Sample Role of "Champion" (HoH: MC, p. 14)

Query: should he undergo the Initiation The Oath of the Helpful Stranger during chargen, would that take a single season? And would that grant him the Minor Magical Focus in Wards (perhaps offset by a Vow "to forever protect those less strong than himself"?

I can not see anything that makes me think it is more than a season. I think the vow flaw would be fine.

A couple of notes on this last progression/character sheet at when he joins. I more or less randomized how many Warping Points he has. I basically started with the "average two per year" guideline in the rules, which got me a base of 60 points. I then found a Champions dice generator and had it roll 60 dice to get the Body, and re-rolling any 1s once. (For those unfamiliar with Champions, or the Hero System as it's now known, you roll xd6 for damage, reading the total as Stun. For Body, if the die is 1, that's 0; if the die is 2-5, that's 1; if it's a 6, that's 2 body). I then did that three times and took the highest of the three rounds, which got me to 76 Warping Points over the 30 years. I figured it would be a little higher than average, due to his being Twilight Prone.

I have not yet done anything with Xenia, or any of their children, design-wise. They're grog-level, and I want them to be able to fill whatever roles the [strike]covenant[/strike] oppidum needs filled. Suggestions welcomed. Xenia is between 46 and 50 (had her Longevity Ritual 15 years ago, and married Ankoydes 32 years ago). They have four children: a son (30), and three daughters (25, 22, and 16). They are all probably married, but with Ankoydes's Dependents, I can easily justify any or all of them coming with.

Also: we start play in Winter 1260 (the first season of 1261)?

Alexandros Eliapolous was born the third son of Elias Georiopolous in the gold-mining village of Esochi, in the southern Rhodopi Mountains. Although he had always been large for his age, he was not allowed to help in the mines, for fear that he would pocket whatever gold he found.

When he was seven, his father was approached by a woman calling herself Alkyone, who convinced Elias to let her take Alexandros away, to where people knew how to deal with "children like him." Once the boy was well away from Esochi, Alkyone explained that she believed that he had a gift, an innate ability to work magic. Alexandros scoffed at the idea, until Alkyone showed him a few simple spells that she could do. She then took him to be fostered at the covenant of Epidauros until the Tribunal meeting in 1214, where he learned the basics of Hermetic society and how to read and write Greek.

The next year, at the Tribunal meeting on Delos, Alexandros interviewed with several magi before choosing Giorgos of Bjornaer (a minor Hoplite with a badger Heartbeast and also skilled in Terram), a member of the Covenant of Polyaigos. His first Gathering of Twelve Years was only a year later, in 1215, when it was revealed that Alexandros's Heartbeast was a bear. Although he was considered a magus by Bjornaer standards, he still completed his traditional Hermetic apprenticeship. He was, for most of his tenure, the only apprentice at Polyaigos.

Twelve years into his apprenticeship (1227), Alexandros took note of 15-year-old Xenia Sosigenakis, the daughter of one of the turb (and she of him). They were married less than year later.

After he was officially (i.e. Hermetically) gauntleted, Alexandros took the name Ankoydes and chose to remain at the covenant he grew up in, continuing his training at a future Hoplite. This included weapons training, education in Hermetic law, and learning which magi were more likely to cause problems for the Tribunal. All four of his children were born at Polyaigos. His son, Hector Ankoydopoulos, was born shortly after his Hermetic Gauntlet in 1230. Helene was born in 1235, Daphne in 1238, and Sophia in 1244.

In the summer of 1249, Ankoydes returned to Crintera and underwent his clan's Ritual of Initiation (The Oath of the Helpful Stranger). After he completed his ordeal (gaining a proficiency in wards he didn't have before, and swearing an oath to protect everyone weaker than himself), he decided to move with his family (sans Hector, who is a part of the turb at Polyaigos) to the covenant of Epidauros. He would spend the next ten years of his life in service to the Order by helping to keep not only the healing magi of the covenant safe when they had to leave for whatever reason, but to protect the covenfolk (many of whom were weak or infirm and had been healed by the Epidaurian magi).

Spring of 1260 found himself in correspondence with Laterala, and the Tremere maga convinced him to come to Hévíz to provide some much-needed protection for a bunch of "mewling academic types". Helene and Daphne have chosen to stay to help at Epidauros (Helene as a nurse, and Daphne apprenticing with the librarian), leaving Ankoydes, his wife Xenia, and daughter Sophia to travel to their new home in Transylvania.

What does Ankoydes know about Laterala? ((Int 2 + Order of Hermes Lore 2 + die roll of 6 = 10.))

She is old of age and appearance. She has one eye. Magi who have met her are few as she apparently does not leave Transylvania often. Those that have met her thinks she is a bitch. From her letters she is very direct. Not much flowery language.
