Sorry, thread slipped my mind. Bernat does return to help Carlos, coming in at Init 1 + stress die 1 then 4 = 9. So between the beast and Carlos. Are we a group (I'm not sure it was definitively answered last time)?
stat wise you can be. Tactically it would improve your effectiveness, since Carlos' stats are all above yours. Story wise there are only two of you and forming a group isn't really necessary, but I will leave the decision to you. One other effect I will mention- as soon as Barat joins the fight the beast will want to focus on him (he has the flowers), forming a group with Carlos as the vanguard will prevent him from doing so- the inequality of inflicted wounds rule means Carlos will be the one taking damage.
Let's do that, then, if Marko concurs (since Carlos would be leader). I believe we qualify for a trained group, so would perform combat with Carlos's stats, with Bernat providing a +3 from his Single Weapon skill.
I don't believe Bernat ever trained with the covenant at the same time as Carlos, which would make you an untrained group.
It depends on what Carlos did in Autumn '35, which Bernat used to train Single Weapon from Fausto. In the Asylum Seeker thread, we noted that Fausto usually "trains a class at once. Everyone takes the class. That allows all of our combat capable people to fight together as a trained group" - but the make-up of that class (it was a class, from the teaching total) wasn't defined.
They did train together, prior to the City of Brass expedition, in a class under the instruction of Fausto.
Carlos makes a poor choice of Vanguard though, as he is small framed and will take injuries deeper. But as group leader, he can add generous bonuses to Bernat's role as Vanguard. I will look that up tonight and post it.
Carlos is the only one with leadership, and that puts a cap on the bonus at +2, and Bernat is under Carlos in every combat stat except soak. Actually, I would allow the leadership bonus to be +3, as this does seem to fit the specialization description...
The bonus is the sum of the combat abiity scores of the collected group, capped at three times the group eader's score in Leadership. ArM5, page 173, middle column, last paragraph).
That means at least +6, and I do not think the specialization applies here.
The bonus is to either Attack or Defense, as determined by the group leader I suppose. We Defend until the ladies are clear, then press the Attack. As leader, Carlos declares Bernat is Vanguard, so he makes the rolls.
