ars-saga-manager.com - Ars 5e Character Creator

Hello everyone! I announced it in the Open License Thread, but I want to create a full thread on ars-saga-manager.com, get feedback, and share the upcoming roadmap.

We have support for the full magi character creation process:

  • Every virtue, flaw, and spell from all Open License content with mechanics implemented
  • Adjustable apprenticeship durations
  • Post Gauntlet Advancement - by the book or season-by-season
  • Configurable home-rules - grant free virtues, ban things, grant free exp, adjust starting spell levels and more; all shareable with the rest of your troupe
  • Custom spell creation with every guideline and mastery
  • Full Magical Creature creation for Familiar Binding
  • As well as mundane companions and grogs!

Based on user feedback, we've recently added Guest Login, filtering virtues by book, and fixed lots of bugs.

But I think the real magic is still to come.

Roadmap

Upcoming, the next big things will be:

  • Adding all the Hedge / Rival Traditions
  • Covenant Creation
  • SAGA CREATION
  • Integrated VTT

Everyone understands making hedgies & covenants, but Saga Creation will be the real thing. A Story Guide will be able to create a saga, create their own house rules, and invite other users to bring their characters (Magi, Companions, and Grogs) into a shared roster with a covenant, enter Play Mode, and advance Season by Season while you all play together, tracking everything on the covenant, Magi advancement, and importantly advancement across all tracked Grogs and Companions. This should become the easiest way for a troupe to keep track of all of the finnicky minutia that comes with running a saga. It still has a lot of definition to come, but everything I have been building is leading towards it.

I'd love to get your feedback and answer any questions. I will be checking this thread, as well as my thread in the Ars Discord. I will likely soon make a Discord to keep better track of things, but these work for now.

Thanks yall!

Hey yall! New Update!

This week’s biggest step is Play Mode for solo characters. Once your starting character is ready, open their Overview and choose Finish creation / Enter play in Build status. You can choose the season where their story begins, review the starting sheet, and then use Record seasonal advancement to continue their journey. Creation becomes a clear starting point; later experience belongs to the seasons in which it was earned.

More of the character’s story, season by season

  • Post-Gauntlet Advancement is available to signed-in accounts. Build a magus’s years after Gauntlet with the book method or season by season. Lab seasons and house-rule XP are included in the totals, and the page shows where those points came from.

  • Initiations can now be added to advancement. Record initiation details and add new virtues, flaws, or changes directly in your seasonal advancement ledger.

  • Seasonal XP is easier to follow. Learning seasons now use the same source-quality calculations as seasons in play. The season list and previews show earned XP, including Elemental Magic and Secondary Insight spillover. Awards keep the bonuses that applied when they were earned, so later changes to a Virtue do not quietly rewrite the past.

  • Winter has a fuller history. Record the result of an aging roll, track longevity rituals by date, and see the effects on aging and Warping. Corrections keep a history, and reopening a Winter does not award an extra year or duplicate its annual effects.

Easier to find, make, and manage characters

  • Your character roster is more compact, with recently viewed characters near the top when you have a larger collection. The Canon Characters shelf now has name search and a type filter.
  • The Virtues and Flaws picker can be filtered by book source, including a quick Definitive Edition choice. Signed-in accounts keep that choice for the next visit.
  • Supernatural Ability scores have more complete advancement support, with an optional Puissant house rule for accelerated abilities.
  • Prerequisite guidance in the Virtues and Flaws picker is clearer without blocking a troupe’s choice.
  • You can paste a JPEG, PNG, or WebP directly into a character’s portrait slot.
  • Empty laboratory Virtues and Flaws sections now offer an Add Virtue or Flaw button right where you need it.
  • Your Account now lets you change your display name and password.

We’ve also improved form contrast and catalog readability, and fixed an editing snag where quickly reopening a saved advancement season could show an outdated revision or close a newer draft. Alongside the visible changes, we completed a substantial round of cleanup and release checks to make the next steps easier to ship reliably.

Update - General Spell Levels, Casting Conditions, Required Abilities, Errata, and more

*October 4, 2026*

General Spells UI Overhaul

General Spells now work mostly correctly. In Add spells, select Choose level on the spell's row. You see your Lab Total for that spell and what the spell does at the level you enter, for example "At level 30: A creature with Infernal Might loses 30 Might Score, if the spell penetrates." To change the level later, open the spell's sheet and select Change level. You can also learn the same spell at more than one level with Learn another level, and each level keeps its own Mastery, sigil and notes.

There is a known issue when making very low level general spells that would put the effective base at 0 or lower. For now, you can use negative magnitude modifiers to push spells down to the level you want.

Spells

-Tick casting conditions on the Spells page. If your magus in creation has Deleterious Circumstances, Environmental Magic Condition, Special Circumstances or Cyclic Magic, you get a Conditions row under the filters of Known Spells. Tick one and you see every Casting figure with it applied. Ticks are not saved.

- You can wish for a General spell at a level on the Spell Wishlist, and the Spell Designer opens a General spell at the level you set.

- Casting Scores now subtract Encumbrance, as the published Definitive Edition prints it (page 213).

- Mercurian Magic now gives you Wizard's Vigil free, at the level of your highest Ritual.

- The Lab Total for starting spells now counts XP you earned in seasons. On existing sheets 54 Lab Totals rose and none fell.

- The Lab Total check now covers Short-Ranged Magic, Cyclic Magic (negative), Unstructured Caster, Holy Magic, Karaite Magic, Incompatible Arts, a Magical Focus in certamen and Elemental Magic.

- In Browse canon spells on the Spell Wishlist tab, you can type words in any order. "spear of fire" finds Pilum of Fire.

- None of the spell changes made an existing sheet invalid.

Virtues and Abilities

- Seven more Virtues now tell you which Abilities they require, as Magister in Artibus does: Cathedral School Master, Doctor in (Faculty), Master Bard, Town Magistrate, Rosh Beth Din, Ars Notoria and Alchemist of Soba. When you take one in creation, you get the missing Abilities at 0 XP, and the sheet review warns you while a score is short.

- Doctor in (Faculty) now asks you to choose the faculty: Medicine, Civil and Canon Law or Theology.

- You can take Special Circumstances more than once, as the book says.

- Record Sympathy Traits and Faerie Rank. They have their own card on Characteristics, in Traits & Reputation. You need an account to see it.

Errata and Fixes

- A familiar's Bronze Cord now counts in Soak, for the magus and the familiar.

- Afflicted Tongue takes 2 from every Casting Score cast with words.

- The Major Flaw Gender Nonconforming no longer takes 3 from People under Gift interaction.

- Almogavar is a Minor Virtue. It was Free.

- The text of a number of Virtues, Flaws and spells is corrected, and the animals from Animals of Mythic Europe follow the official errata. A creature you already made keeps what it was made with.

- Establish laboratory now starts a new laboratory at Refinement 0, or at Magic Theory minus 3 when your Magic Theory is below 3.

- A one-season project with nothing banked now has Complete now, which finishes it without recording a season of work.

- In Add spells on a phone, the filters fold behind a Filters button, so you see more of the list.

- When the app refuses a change because of the rules, you now see the reason. The Spell Wishlist said "Failed to create character spell" and now says "This spell is already on the wishlist at level 20."

- The Design line at the foot of a spell's sheet is no longer cut off.

Thank you all for your reports and requests. Most of these fixes were made due to player reports in the app or in Discord.

Not many comments so far, which is unfortunate, since this is really phenomenal work and a very useful tool. Kudos @LobsterFalcon!

The one thing I miss playing with it is small buttons with + and - to quickly adjust scores rather than have to type them. That would be a great improvement

Great idea, lets take a look

Ars Saga Manager: what's new, October 17th

Hedge Magic. You can now build a Folk Witch, a Vitki or a Gruagach. Create a Companion or a Grog and pick a start under Magic Tradition. Rune scripts, gruagach spells and a witch's fetishes and potions have pages of their own, and the XP meter counts each apprenticeship. Seasons for these traditions are not built yet: until then you add scripts, spells, fetishes and potions yourself. Learned Magicians, Elementalists and Nightwalkers coming soon!

Solomonic scores. You can now keep the five Solomonic arts and Sihr on the Abilities page. A Gifted sahir or mustajib holds the arts through that status; without The Gift, each art's Virtue adds its art.

Formulae. You can now keep the inceptions, reagents and theriacs your character knows on the Abilities page, and design your own.

Heartbeast. A magus with Heartbeast has a section for the animal form, in place of Familiar.

Printing. You can now print a play reference after your sheet: the rules text of your spells, devices and Virtues and Flaws. You can also choose Letter or A4 and black and white ink.

Spells and the laboratory.

  • You can now describe a spell you invented in play, and correct it later.
  • One laboratory project can now hold several spells, and inventions bank over several seasons.

Bestiary. You can now find, delete and print your own creatures. Their figures follow your edits. The core book's creatures of Magic are in the Bestiary.

Characters.

  • You can now create a Mythic Companion.
  • Unspent restricted creation XP can be spent in play.

Closer to the book. An audit against the Definitive Edition fixed hundreds of Virtues, Flaws, spells, creatures and rolls. Rules text now cites the book's page.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE BUG REPORTS AND SUPPORT! Please keep it coming.

I am just here to say that I has been using it, and it is a fantastic tool. I am not playing Ars Magica at the moment, but I have come back for teorycrafting and Definitive Edition reviewing. And this tool has made my journey easier. I encourage everybody to try it.

If you ever need help with hosting costs down the road, please ask me/the community. This is a fantastic resource that I'd like to see stick around for a long time.
