Chapter 1: Reunited

Knowing they're heading out the next day, Adele does some spontaneous casting (ceremonial for the two level-15 ones) the prior evening for a couple hours. She casts several R: Personal, D: Concentration Rego spells and maintains them for Moon:

  • ReAn ward against insects
  • ReAq ward against rain/wet
  • ReCo15 running quickly spell (1 magnitude lower than Animus's, I believe) (If she gets extra magnitudes from the roll, they go for higher speeds.)
  • ReCo15 slow flight spell, having it keep her on the ground currently (If she gets extra magnitudes from the roll, they go for higher speeds.)
  • ReCo to ignore wound and fatigue penalties (No idea what to do if she gets extra magnitudes.)
  • ReIg ward to keep her from getting cold
  • ReTe(Aq) ward to keep her clothes clean

Figuring that will make her journey wherever more pleasant, she's ready to go to sleep. She does so in her typical fashion, letting her magic wash over her.

(OOC: I'll have to write up a list of her favorite spontaneous spells so I have all the levels worked out in advance. Most of these are in the 3-4 region and so can be pulled off without Fatigue and without rolling (÷5). I'll do rolls for the ReCo effects in the order listed above.
Nice time for 1's!
So that's rolls of 8, 14, and 3 after the follow-ups to the 1's.
8 is a little shy, so running remains at ReCo15. But the flight spell is ReCo20 now.

Again, in order from above, Concentration rolls:
All but the ReIg ward are OK.
Unknown number of botch dice on that one, so I rolled 3. Unless there are at least 4 she's OK, I just only rolled 3.
And all set on ReIg on the second try.)

ppc: Props. The ones for ceremonial casting. I'm getting rusty about terminology

The captain shakes his head as he sees you gear up for your expedition into the winter forest.

Tabanus is the strangest sight. He wears several layers of leather and pelt that he looks more like a mummy than a mage. He has three companions - grogs would be the wrong term for the poor wrteches that have to carry the heavy backbacks.

"I assume we take the carts as far as they take us", he says, clearly enjoying himself.

Menatia has put on her thickest woolen cloak over a more casual dress than usual and several layers of undergarments to help protect from the cold. She greets all her soldales when they gather in the morning for the journey.

"I believe we won't see much of civilized conveniences for some time and carts and wagons are probably out of question for the roads we will travel. I'm leaving most of my personal belongings here." She carries a leather bag with the things she think she will need in the wilderness.

"As long as things left behind are small enough and not left within sancta, I can retrieve them if desperately needed while we are en route." Adele looks less prepared for travel than probably anyone else, dressed as she would be any other day.

HIldegarde has her usual heavy traveling coat and bag, nothing fancy. She wonders if Tabanus is just ridiculous or If the inner forest is way colder than the rest and he's the only one taking necessary preperation. She answers Adele "That's convenient, i'll give you another half seed in case we get separated for any reason i'll put it on a safe spot for you to travel to me. I guess no one has a formulaic ward against cold ? I can perhaps spontaneously cast something for myself but for the others... By the way would you lend me your casting props if needed Tabanus ?"

The grace with which Tabanus grants her the favor of using his casting tools is nothing short of smug.

ooc: Well, we have got to travel to the interesting part of the forest somehow. So this is how we simulate it.
Stress Roll Stamina 12+. Assume the Triamore aura for spells cast there and a neutral aura for all other spells.

Boni: + X (your choice to be made before rolling) for excessive clothing (gives - X to all dexterity and spellcasting rolls; this negative modifier can be halved by taking X rounds to remove gloves etc for performing an action that takes no more than 15 minutes).
up to + 10 for magic protecting against snow and cold and falling (choose your bonus yourself, take less than +10 if you think your magic does only partly protect against cold). If you perform a spell for others, they can add the bonus (even after rolling).
Anyone failing gets a long-term fatigue level from being cold and catches a cold if they fail to resist against disease.

When you are all assembled you make your way into the inhospitable winter world outside. There are few encounters and you make it to the forest unmolested.

Recognizing Adele as a Rego specialist, Animus asks her if she would cast a ward against cold on him as well.

(I'll wait to see how strong the ward is before rolling.)

bonus from excessive clothing : +2

invisible castle not working so...

spontaneous self ward against cold
assuming base 4 +2 sun for a final lvl 10
: (Re (10) + Ig (5) + sta (1) + excessive gesture and shouting +2 +roll (7)))/2 -2 excessive clothing

self spontaneous ward against rain (lvl4)
(Re 10 + aq 0 +sta 1 + excessive gesture and shouting +2 +roll (6) ) /2 -2 excessive clothing

I assume I get the +10..

final stress roll is sta (1) + 2 excessive clothing + 10 protection so 13+ stress die (5), unless I botch I should be ok.

[Edit : found another roller
coyotecode.net/roll/lookup.php?rollid=79981

i rolled 7, 6 and 5 so all good and edited above]

Would Survival also apply to this roll? If it does, would a specialty in forest be applicable?

Adele is happy to oblige.

(Invisible Castle is down, so I'll roll manually.)
ReIg ward against cold at D: Concentration, extra going to the amount of cold it resists: (Sta 0 + Re 19 + Ig 0 + Aura 2 + stress die 3)/2 = 12 -> Base 4 + 1 Touch + 1 Concentration
Magic Addiction: Int 3 + Concentration 2 + roll 7 = 12 > 5 -> success
Concentration to cast next spell: Int 3 + Concentration 1 + roll 3 = 7 ≥ 6 -> success
Sustaining the Demanding Spell: 24 + Aura 2 + simple die 3 = 29 -> success

So Animus has a Base-4 ReIg ward against cold that will last D: Moon. And Adele rests a few minutes to recover the 1 Fatigue.

As for Adele, she is warded against cold and insects and more, plus she has a flight spell to protect against falling. That covers more than the two things mentioned, so probably +10.
Stamina 0 + Bonus 10 + stress roll 1, 3 = 16 ≥ 12 -> success

So that gives him a +5 bonus against cold.

He will also add in some additional warm clothes for the trip (fur-lined cloak and bonnet, as well as warmer boots and gloves) for an additional +2.

Stamina 1 + extra clothing 2 + ward against cold 5 + stress die 7 (rolled manually) = 15. Or 19 if Survival (forest specialty) counts.

That would be against deeper cold than +5. Against anything up to +5 he's got total protection (following the Ward Against Heat and Flame example). If you compare that to heat, the weather would have to be really, really ridiculously hot to get to +5. So he should not have to worry about cold from weather, but he wouldn't want to go swimming in ice water.

Isn't concentration on stamina ?

Not according to ArM5 for Maintain the Demanding Spell (which is what this spell is with a different duration) nor Magic Addiction. Which Characteristic is used can vary for any given Ability, too. For example, Single Weapon uses Dexterity for attacking but Quickness for defending.

yes.

Eduardo didn't bother with magic to keep him warm prefering to layer upon sweet layer of clothing and fabric to hold him against the bulwark of the horrific cold as his breath rolled out and misted upon the air. well if this isn't simply just charming he trudged forward pulling his gloves closer down his digits

stam +2, survival 2+1(forests), + 5 thick clothes +2 roll= success!

As the others prepare for the trip Menatia asks politely if someone might help her with ReIg ward as well.
She is wearing warm clothes worth +3 but has no Survival to fall back on.

Adele helps Menatia as well, having put enough time between castings to recover the 1 Fatigue.

ReIg ward against cold at D: Concentration, extra going to the amount of cold it resists: (Sta 0 + Re 19 + Ig 0 + Aura 2 + stress die 1,3)/2 = 13.5 -> Base 4 + 1 Touch + 1 Concentration
Magic Addiction: Int 3 + Concentration 2 + roll 4 = 9 ≥ 5 -> success
Concentration to cast next spell: Int 3 + Concentration 1 + roll 8 = 12 ≥ 6 -> success
Sustaining the Demanding Spell: 24 + Aura 2 + simple die 5 = 31 -> success
original four rolls, and a second link because of the 1

So Menatia has a Base-4 ReIg ward (just like the one on Animus) against cold that will last D: Moon. And Adele again rests a few minutes to recover the 1 Fatigue.
