Chapter 16 Council Meeting (Autumn and Winter 1014)

"Fair." She stands to the side, letting Thadeus and Thom make the changes they want to.

Current text:

Elected by vote among the full members.
Term: until they stand down or are voted out by a majority vote of the Council

Proposed text:

The Praetor is elected by a majority vote of the Council for a term of three years, unless the Praetor steps down voluntarily or is voted out by a majority vote of all full members of the covenant.

The last line would also need removal: "The Praetor may be removed from the office by a unanimous vote of the other members of the council..

The Praetor is elected by a majority vote of the Council for a term of three years, unless the Praetor steps down voluntarily or is voted out by a majority vote of all full members of the covenant.

I think the last line should read … full members of the council

"How do you see the difference between full members of the Coucil and full members of the covenant?" asks Thadeus.

"I would think that any magus that has been accepted is considered a member of the Council. Anyone else who is part of the covenant isn't on the Council. Visiting or guesting magi or magi who want to be associated but not yet signed the Charter would not be part of the Council," answers Thom.

"Maybe that's a way to think of it?"

"Guests and visitors are not members of the covenant, either, so I don't see a difference. So let's go with Council, then."

"If we are agreed on that change, I suggest we invite those present since last year to become full members if they so wish." He raises a hand before anyone interrupts, "I feel this should take place before we decide on a Praetor, so that you get a say in the matter."

He then turns to Elric, "Sodalis, I do not want to slight you, but you have just arrived a bit over a season ago. I feel that you should be offered the status of a probationary member, starting from the time of your arrival. This would let us get to know you better, and you us, before you commit to the covenant."

"I don't see any reason to offer and I appreciate the gesture. Yes, I accept."

"With the amendment about the praetor, yes, I can accept to live under this chart. So yes, I accept."

After the new members (including Betula if she accepts) have signed the Charter, Thadeus moves on to the next decision to be made. "Now for the election of the Praetor. Thom has nominated me, and I am be willing to take on those duties. Are there any other candidate, or shall we vote directly?"

"How would you like to do things, if you were Praetor, Thadeus?"

Thom sits beside Elric, listening to Arthur answer Cath'rinne's question. But he leans in close to Elric and whispers:

"Don't worry. You'll be a full member as soon as possible."

Thom also smiles to Sionag, nodding to the healer, fond memories of her assistance clear in his smile.

Elric nods "It is fine. After all, that was my supposed position when I came here, so it's not like anything has changed in my rights and duties."

Osgar can help the magi getting an overview of available staff. This is what he has on its list, and he wants to check that he has everything right.

  • 8 magi (@ 5pts):
    • Angus, Nauvi, Thadeus , Elric stay at Ungulus
    • Betula, Cath'rinne, Thomas, Sionagh go to Oak Circle
  • 6 PC companions (@ 3pts):
    • Ealhstan, Hamish (turb captain) stay at Ungulus
    • Turold, Edwin (autocrat), Ruedi, Leofric (blacksmith and friar) go to Oak Circle
    • Finn might return, but at present he is roaming the land at his own expense.
  • 5 PC grogs (@1 pts):
    • Telsa and Sasso stay with Thadeus at Ungulus
    • Jack goes to Oak Circle as turb captain
    • Iago would prefer to go with Jack, though I cannot remember what magus they came with
    • Odard (undecided)
  • 4 grogs of Nauvi's (@1 pt) stay with Nauvi
  • 3 native specialists (named specialists) (@2 pts) all stay at Ungulus
    • Osgar (autocrat), Mildred (stewardess), and Clarissa (head chirurgeon)
  • 10 native grogs (6) and rangers (4) (@1pt)
    • Thom suggested to take 3-4 grogs and one ranger
    • None of the rangers volunteer to go on their own. Going together is more appealing. Maybe take all four, since the main site has the Galwegians?
  • 5 rangers from Galloway (@1pt)
    • I assume they stay with Thadeus. Nobody else trusts them.
  • 4 new specialists (@2pts)
    • Luciu's glassblower, I assume he stays at Ungulus
    • Bookbinder, illuminator, scribe, I assume they stay at the main library at Ungulus
  • 1 apprentice scribe (Alice Laundry Lass) @ 1pt
    • scribe, I assume they stay at the main library at Ungulus

These inhabitants require about 29 servants and teamsters. You have 20, but Janus already ordered further recruitment, and it is not very difficult to fill the gap over Winter. «I would wait before we recruit any additional labourers, though. It takes time to get new people settled and train them properly,» says Osgar.

Agricultural staff is in addition. They are reluctant to move from the land they know, and mechanically only as silver income.

Ex laundry lass is called Alice, Ealhstan is not a scribe at all.

"As I have done since I arrived here. Speak with all and try to find common grounds as much as possible. Propose actions that will benefit all of us and strengthen our covenant. Reestablish and develop relations with other covenants." He shrugs, "I don't know what else to add."

Probably not full time. He might alternate sites.

Actually, they might be well-suited to the Oak Grove too.

OK. Please give me a main site, for accounting purposes. Baseline I was assuming that you wanted to have him at Oak Circle when there is a story about.

Sure, if they are not too tied to Thadeus. Your call.

Osgar adds, «I forgot the lass that Leofric rescued. I am not sure what role she can take. She seems a bit lost, but Clarissa is taking care of her.»

Let's give it a try at the Oak Circle then. Leofric will be able to interface with the nearby village, which probably does not have more than a small chapel, if that.

As for Telsa and Sasso, keep them at Ungulus, where they can keep an eye of the rangers from Galloway.

OOC: I'm open to doing the roleplaying, but from purely an out of character perspective (seeing how Cath'rinne hasn't met Leofric), as a blatant gifted necromancer, she's likely to be uneasy if not downright hostile to the idea of having an unknown character with true faith settling down with her at the oak circle, where we, incidentally also have Turold, a pagan (Major) busy recruiting other witches, Lise, another pagan druid who might show up randomly, and Sionag, another Pagan (Major) druid. I know that he has unaffected by the gift, but she doesn't know that, and she would likely expect someone with true faith who finds out about a bunch of pagan druids hanging out with a blatant gifted necromancer who hangs out with ghosts for fun to try to, you know, burn her at the stake or report them to Wulfric or something. It's what she thinks an average member of the clergy reacting to her gift would do. It would be easier roleplaying if he was at Ungulus and we had Tessa/Sasso at the Oak Circle.
