Chapter 17bis-A where Angus and Oswald go scouting

Angus will wait another couple of days and then announce to Oswald “It is time I dealt with those soldiers Oswald. Wait here and if something goes wrong make your way back to Ungulus. I will take about an hour before I begin.” He them moves out of sight of Oswald and casts Veil of Invisibility PeIm 20 roll 25 (ceremonially, taking one hour). He then approaches the camp and fires his Arbalest of Vilano ReTe 25 roll 25, no botch at the first 5 soldiers.

Attack rolls (1d10+15)
1 +17
2 +20
3 +21
4 +21
5 +23

  • 17 against 8 -> 9 + damage 15 -> Dead
  • 20 against 7 -> 14 -> Dead
  • 21 against 17 -> 4 + damage 15 -> Incapacitated
  • 21 against 21 -> he dived into a tent, avoiding the bolt
  • 21 against 13 -> 8 -> Dead

Angus downs three soldiers in quick succession, but the fourth one, seeing his comrades fall, looks around without seeing the invisible magus. When the bolt is released, he dives into a tent, shouting: «The warlock is upon us. To arms!»

As the entire camp is rattled, and the soldiers take cover or find their weapons and shields, Angus downs one more soldier.

Angus can see three soldiers, now armed, but without proper armour, looking his way. He knows that one dived into the tent, and he saw at least one diving behind a stone fence at the far side of the camp. There should be about three more, but they are all to disorganised to be counted.
Angus downs a fifth soldier

Angus moves around the edge of the camp and the fires again from about 90 degrees round to the right. He casts Arbalest again, against new targets

These are multicast? You remember the penalties for multiple targets?

The three standing soldiers are downed effectively. One of them takes two attempts, having taken the first bolt on the shield, but after the round, there is no one moving. Perception + Awareness 15+ to even hear someone breathing. They have got to be somewhere though.

I have not included the -5 for multi targets.
Per+Awareness of 5 so fail.

Angus begins to walk around the tents searching for any movement or sounds.

OK, let's assume that he used more than two rounds, and roll with it. One or two of the last three tried to charge, but against an invisible target, it was quite futile.

He will check everyone is dead, dispatching anyone required with his dagger. He will recover as many of his sling stones as possible by digging them out of the corpses. He then dispel his invisibility using Dispel Imaginem PeVi 5 - CT 22. He the calls Oswald over and together they gather the corpses together round the campfire, propping them up and covering them with their cloaks, to give an impression of an active camp. Angus and Oswald then see to the feeding and watering of the horses and then assess what human food assets are in camp to allow them to move in and await Wulfric.

Awareness + Perception please

Angus - Awareness+Perception 7 (8 if searching). Will spend 1 confidence if it helps.
Oswald - Awareness+Perception 32 (33 if in woods)

Angus opens the tent where the dodgemaster dived in. The moment he opens it, the man starts flailing wildly with an axe. Being invisible, the dodge is trivial, but necessary. The soldier sees his chance, and Angus hears something crashing down, the tent shakes, and starts sagging, as the soldier cut through a pole and the canvas on the far side. Fleeing for his life.

Oswald is a hundred paces away, watching, isn't he?

Angus does not dodge as he is immune to Steel. Once out of the tent he launches 5 stones at the fleeing soldier.

At this point Oswald is still in the hide he made with a view of the camp

One lucky strike hits with the wooden shaft to leave a bruise just above Angus' knee. It stings, but foes not quite count as a wound.

The soldier is gone, which makes eight soldiers left spread on the ground. It takes a few rounds to take stock, and then Angus sees two soldiers running away in panic, already almost a hundred paces to the North. There should be a couple more hiding.

In the distance, you can hear loud gasps from the villagers gathered at a safe distance.

Angus searches out the final couple on the camp and executes them. He then goes somewhere unseen and dispels his invisibility before returning to Oswald. “We will stay and watch to see if the guards or Wulfric return I think”

Angus ends up with ten bodies on his hands. The camps was already disorderly before Angus came, and the bodies do nothing to improve it.

A couple of teenagers approach cautiously to see what is going on, but they turn and run back as soon as Angus spots them.

Angus will wait until night when no peasants are about and spontaneously cast a Rego Terram effect to did a burial pit casting total 12 (100 cubic feet of earth, 2 paces long by 2 paces deep by 25 paces wide) and the he and Oswald will strip the bodies and bury them using ReTe to cover them back over - casting total 13. They will both load the horses with the armour, weapons and horse feed and Oswald will lead them back to Ungulus, hiring help on the way if needed using some of the £2 Angus gives him.

Angus will re enter the hide with the food and water and wait another week to see who turns up, if anyone.

While very cautious, the peasants are also very curious, and the sun retires before they do. In the dead of night, however, Angus and Oswald may bury and loot, and as far as they know, nobody watches.

Did I mention any horses? OK. Let's say that the men-at-arms had two horses. They can carry the weapns and armour, and sufficient food and fodder to get home safely, but the tents, some food, and most of the utensils have to be left behind. Do you leave it at the campsite?

Oswald will take the two horses with what he can take. Angus moves the remaining food to his hide. The tents and utensils are left in place. Angus then retires to the hide to keep watch.

The day, and most of the next one pass, and then, in the afternoon, the villagers come poking. They seem to search the area, before they start taking some of the remaining loot. The following morning they return to take the tents and other heavy things.

Angus lets them loot everything, they could use it given the recent war damage.

In the evening two mounted men-at-arms arrive from the North to investigate. It takes an area lore to recognise their crest, but Angus knows that it is neither that of Carlisle, nor that of the ones he just defeated. The villagers has already cleared the campsite, and any lingering villagers shy away as soon as the riders can be seen in the distance.
