Chapter 17bis-A where Angus and Oswald go scouting

Area lore Northumbria roll of 11 or 14 with confidence

He is pretty sure the crest is not Northumbrian at all. There has been talk of both the sheriffs of Nottingham and Lincoln here.

Angus casts Shriek of the Impending Shaft InHe 15 - roll 25 and the step out and approach the riders. “Hail warriors, what news do you have from the north?”

«No news at all, woodsman,» says the warrior, looking suspiciously at Angus' clothing, dirty after days in a hiding hole ... «but news came our way of an incident here.» He points to the ground under his horse. «Did you witness it?»

“No I did not witness anything good sir. What was it that happened?”

«A battle of some sort. Have you been away long?»

“Only a couple of weeks good sir. Where do you hail from? I don’t recognise your badge”

«Ah. » The two sergeants look at each other, whisper, and nod. The horses move closer together. «Nottingham,» he says. «Where is your abode?»

“I go where I will soldier. Now you and your friend are not thinking of attacking me are you? You will regret it if you do as I can be quite a handful when I get annoyed and you sassanachs seem to have a way of getting me so. So what will be be my bonny lads, talk or war, quick now for I grow bored with your questions?”

The two men nod to each other, kick their horses, and make full speed, one on each side of Angus, before they quickly turn away and back North.

Angus casts Arbalest of Vilano at them (-2 for 2 targets included below)

  1. Right hand soldier attack 18 and 22
  2. Left hand soldier attack 15, 16 and 13

The horses are fast, and they manage to evade all the shots, which crash into the shrubs. One of the horses seem to hesitate a bit, stray, and slows somewhat. The other runs ahead and is quickly out of range.

(defense rolls of 18-22-18-20-19, same order as the attacks listed)

Angus casts Doublet of Impenetrable Silk MuAn 15 - roll 24 and Veil of Invisibility without ceremony PeIm 20 - roll 19, 1 fatigue and slowly walks north after the horsemen, assuming they are scouts for a larger force. He will travel slowly enough to recover his fatigue

I does not take long. The horsemen meet up with a couple of footsoldiers no 300 paces North. When Angus can see them, maybe a hundred paces away, they are already on their feet and starting to scatter.

Was Angus down one or two fatigue levels? If he was down one, he has recovered.

Just down 1 fatigue so now fine. He will continue north to see if he can identify anyone as Wulfric

As they scatter like rank-and-file soldiers, scared out of their rank and their file. The one Angus manages to catch up with, enough to tell for sure, looks like a common man-at-arms with the Nottingham crest.

If any move north on the road Angus will follow at a distance to make being heard unlikely. If they all scatter in to the country he will continue up the road north to see if they were scouts ahead of Wulfric’s group

One of the horses takes the road, but Angus is quickly outrun. Angus can make three or four miles to the next village, before the sun sets.

Out of sight of the village or any villagers Angus dispels his Invisibility. He then moves on to the village and looks for somewhere offering food and shelter for coin, preferably with a window overlooking the road if possible. He will enquire if anyone has heard anything of Wulfric

The villagers are suspicious of the magus, and answer evasively, avoding his gaze. When he shows them enough silver, however, they do offer him a hayloft, where he can sleep. There is no proper window, but gaps enough in the wall to get some view of the village.

«Wulfric, but of course, the witch hunter. He is hunting witches and warlocks for the bishop. He rah-eh-was here last year,» blurts out a young lad, before he quickly shuts up under the stern looks of his elders. One of the older men. «It is true. It has been five or six weeks, since he was here. All we know is his mission to hunto down all users of magick.» Nobody else is willing to talk.
