"I have a feeling I will learn a great deal from you, Master… sodalis. Please forgive my stumbles and inexperience. My apprenticeship didn't give me much experience learning to work with other magi. Hiding from a wizard's war alongside ancient roman soldiers stuck in regio tends to make brief a more expansive curriculum of study on the workings of a covenant or the Order itself."
Castellum Viridium and trained by the late Great Flavius Igneous. Gauntlet and almost straight to war. Fire, gore and filth for ten years. Now some fanatic cleric called Wulfric wants to purge the spell casters of this land. It seems a poor reward for so much fighting and it is not over yet. Replies Janus.
“At the moment I have no home, I come from Cheshire, east of Chester. I may return but wandering suits me for now.” Ealhstan finishes the last of his ale and stands nodding respectfully to the priest, “thank you for the conversation, might be we meet again. Will you be performing Mass tomorrow?”
"Ryder... but my father wasn't of any real note. I was lucky enough to be selected as an altar boy and Brother Aethelred of the monastery there took note of me and arranged my education. By the grace of god may I serve him well with what meagre gifts I have," Ealstan bows his head slightly as he makes the sign of the cross. "Well I should see you at Mass, traveling is not as conducive to taking part in the sacrements as often as I would like so I must avail myself when I can."
If the Priest has no further questions, Ealhstan nods again and heads out looking for the others and to find where they're staying tue night.
«Brother Aethelred, you say; very well. I'll see you again.» As Ealhstan is leaving, he can hear the two men resuming their conversation with hushed voices.
Assuming that you stay together, you stay at a large, mid-range inn, known colloquially as the Crowded House but displaying a wheel above its door. The covenfolk have stayed here many times before. Edwin may well be sent to arrange it, while the others are busy at the market.
Like most inns at the time, accommodation is in the common room, narrow loft spaces, and the hayloft, and there are a lot of people coming to market and mass, so most of the space is used. You are lucky to get room together, with relative privacy, in the loft space above the common room.
You gather that the alternatives would be the upmarket inn of the Traveller and the Priest, and random tradespeople who squeeze in a few guests as a side business. This is a good compromise; it is professional and offers everything a common traveler needs, without excesses.
Ealhstan attends mass the next morning. When it is over he feels lighter, his faith renewed by the words and the ceremony, by a space where devotion to God is lifted above all else. He will return to Ungulus with the grogs, a spring in his step that wasn't there before.
[Dunno if you wanted anything to happen at the Mass or give any description of the sermon but, assuming none of that this is what happens with Ealhstan.]
All the characters have kept a low profile and attracted little attention and no trouble. The covenfolk have sold what they came to sell, bought some good cloth and clothes, and picked up some skins from tanner. If you have nothing else to do, you can return home and rejoin the others in Chapter 3.
This is becoming relevant for copying, and the invisibility cloak nor the weightless chain - it's not clear to me what spell this are supposed to be. I'm guessing the Flaming Blade is Blade of the Virulent Flame.
It is the Blace of the Virulent flame indeed. Triggered when the sword is drawn from its scabbard. Probably twelve uses a day, or maybe less, you can decide when you copy.
The weightless chain is a canon item [HoH:S:38].
The invisibility cloak is some variation over veil of invisibility. Feel free to design the details in terms of trigger/uses/duration when you copy.
