Chapter 2g - Spring 1228 - In Search of a Second Singer

One of the plinths is larger than the other - it looks as though there may have been a group of statues rather than just one on it. They're obviously old, and it looks as though whatever happened to remove the statues on them didn't happen recently. A merchant has rested some of their baskets of food on the base of the larger plinth, but otherwise no one's paying them any particular attention.

Constantine can't read, let alone read greek, so he can't tell what the plaques on the plinths say. It looks as though the two inscriptions are different, though, and also different from the plaque on the third statue.

We really need to make that enchantment two-way....

I take it Second Sight isn't revealing anything? Let's flit about and inspect the area in any case, just to make sure we're not missing something.

Scott

Second Sight isn't revealing anything, but it's not clear whether that's because there's nothing to see, or because a divine aura is suppressing his abilities.

Flitting about the area reveals a bunch of things that are momentarily interesting, but nothing that seems actually significant.

OK, let's have a look at the monument. I don't suppose Constantine would be able to tell who's memorialized here?

Scott

It's the head and shoulders of a woman, looking out over the square with a determined expression on her face. Her garment drapes down from an ornamental fastening at each shoulder, and her hair is elaborately coiffured. There's no obvious iconography on the statue to identify it, although it's clear that whoever she was, she was wealthy.

Whilst Contantine is examing the statue, there's a momentary gleam of light from one of the creases in her hair-do, as the sun catches another metal in the crevice. Landing on the statue and peering closely, Constantine thinks it might be traces of gold - possibly the statue used to be gilded a long time ago.

Neither I nor Constantine has any reason why we're looking at a bit of gold, but at least it's shiny, so let's examine more closely.

Scott

It looks like the gold has been protected by its position in a crevice - it seems likely that once the entire statue gleamed gold. That would have been a long time ago, though, and these days the underlying copper is all that's left.

[OOC: You're looking at gold largely because Constantine is trying to investigate the statue in a lot of detail (and got a fairly good Per + Awareness total when I rolled it). Unless there's something significantly new he wants to try, he's probably gathered most of the information of any importance that's within his capabilities.]

Let's flit around the area a bit more. Anything else of interest here?

Scott

Constantine flits around the square a while longer, but doesn't really find anything else of more than momentary interest.

Then let's head back to Viola.

What's become of the grogs?

Scott

The brothers started this banter because they were heading toward the inn at Chersonesus.

Godzimir replies "Well then Antonio you have laboured enough. Take your choice now," he stops walking and turns to face the billegerant singer, and Bogdan stops too following his brothers lead. "You're unhappy about your lot in life? Then make a choice now." Pointing between himself and his brother, "We are going to an inn and will continue with our tasks. If your singing skill is lost and all you can offer is whining then frak off. Find your adventure elsewhere."

The singer looks at the brothers, glances at Viola, then bolts.

Constantine can do this fairly easily - by this point, she's probably at the inn (assuming Antonio's actions haven't significantly delayed that).

You can assume he gives Viola a full report, unless you think he'd be likely to do otherwise.

The brothers continue toward the inn, falling in line with Viola. If Goz sees a polite way to say it, he offers, "Maga, the singer has left. He proved angry and untrustworthy."

Viola gives a measured response to the last comment. "I see. Let's...another singer, yes?"

Scott

You find the inn with little difficulty, and the grogs are able to book a room for your now reduced group. The inn itself is a fairly quiet - it's still early in the season - but there are a few other patrons dotted about. There's no sign of any other singers.

Constantine can join the party a little while after they've settled in.

Let's get the grogs exploring, in that case. It's hard to believe that a busy port city would be entirely devoid of individuals with musical talent.

Scott

[OOC: Keeping things moving by assuming the grogs obey Viola's instructions.]

Talking to the inn's patrons quickly brings success...of a sort. There was a pair of musicians at the inn - a young kipchak singer and her brother who accompanied her on his dombra (a Kazakh lute variant). Tragically, the young woman collapsed at the end of her perfomance yesterday, and passed away over night.

One of the people sharing the beers the grogs had bought to loosen tongues crosses himself and mutters that such a death was clearly unnatural. Another agrees - likely she'd drawn the ire of one of good folk. She never did know when to stop asking questions.

That story is both too fascinating to overlook, and probably utterly useless to our present purpose. Viola will direct the grogs to keep searching, but also to try to locate this brother. If nothing else, he might know another singer.

Scott

The brother took his sister to be buried earlier today, along with some of their friends. They're not back yet, although should be fairly soon.

Chersonesus is large enough that there are a few other inns, so you could go and do a tour of those rather than waiting, if you wanted to.
