Chapter 3c (Autumn 1228): The Tribunal of Thebes

Catella shakes her head. "Not personally, I'm afraid - I believe one of them did visit Alexandria a year or so back, but I didn't meet her. They're in the Propontian Phyle, though, so if you check their building I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction."

Timaios isn't expected to be on duty constantly, so he will have time to go looking for the members of Nova Castra later, and assuming he does, can find them easily enough.

"Ah. One of those Tremere. Not that they aren't all like it to some degree - brutes, the lot of them. Rather worship their own political structure than anything with a bit of actual majesty to it." He continues on in this vein for a little while - he'd quite like to see Gigas kicked back into the Translyvanian tribunal, taking Gregorius with them (and what did they pull, anyway, to force him into a leadership position?).

[OOC: Is there anything else you want to do here / elsewhere (in particular, is Viola going to try to do anything further about Symeon), or shall we move on to the tribunal?]

"That's all I need. Thank you, Catella," says Timaios with an inclination of his head. "If you have any difficulties with the apprentices, don't hesitate to let me know and I'll see if I can smooth over any issues."

He gives Catella one more smile before he turns and heads to the Propontian Phyle to see if he can find anyone from the mysterious spring covenant where his fellow Quaesitor lost her mind - or most of it, anyway.

"He's the leader because I want to stay in my lab, and not have to deal with visitors."

If Symeon wants to choose Lucian, Viola thinks he'd be perfectly happy as Lucien's apprentice. Chryse is another matter....Given that Lucien presumably knows all the Merinita magi in the tribunal, does he have any idea who else might be looking for apprentices?

Scott

Gregorius should be easy enough to find.

Lucian looks..disappointed? Frustrated? at this, but drops the subject.

Amphitrite might take an apprentice if they're the right apprentice, but Chryse probably doesn't fit that - if she was a sea nereid's daughter, it might be different. Calliope's mater finished training Calliope a little while ago now, so might be thinking about another apprentice?

[OOC: Let's summarise as nobody else that Viola can find appears to be seriously interested in Chryse (and a few people are looking relieved that someone's seeking to claim her).

[Lucien can be a social butterfly all he wants, but Viola wants nothing more than to crawl back into her lab, once this three-story circus that's become The Viola Show comes to an end.]

nod and smile

That's both reassuring and worrying. Maybe if Viola thinks "diamond in the rough" hard enough, it'll come true--like the Secret!

Scott

Timaios nods sagely and, after letting the other attendants know that he needs to take care of some (hopefully quick) business so that the children aren't left alone, he heads off to try to find the other magi.

Gregorius isn't too hard to spot, with his notable Tremere robes, and Timaios approaches confidently and says, "Excuse me, I'm looking for some of the magi of Nova Castra. Nothing urgent, but if you could point me in the right direction... ?"

If you're looking on the bright side, maybe people are just assuming she's going to go to a Merinita? And those are all just interested in the other faerie-blooded children.

Yes, it's clearly just that.

Asena, despite her leack of Greek, tries to learn if there are any tasks for the good of the tribunal that she can do before 1235 to raise her chances of acceptance in 7 years time.

"I'm one myself - Gregorius of Tremere. How can I help?"

On a more serious note...there's also the fact that opening the Arts of a Strong Faerie Blooded apprentice isn't that easy - you're looking at a minimum lab total required of (30 (major supernatural virtue) +10 (second sight minor supernatural virtue) x2 =80. Which is going to be challenging for Viola.

"Timaios, ex Guernicus," says the young magus, extending his hand to Gregorius. "A fellow Guernicus, Tasia, was at your covenant for some time, and she came back... let's say in a less-than-optimal mental state. I'm trying to follow up on that, find out what exactly happened, perhaps see if I can untangle whatever it was that led to her difficulties. Don't fret, this isn't a legal obligation. I'm simply looking into this because it's something that could be troublesome to magi, and I have some obligation to the fellows of my House."

Gregorius looks slightly surprised, but takes Timaios' hand and shakes it. "I can certainly do what I can to help, although I don't know how much I'll be able to tell you that's new. Tasia spent very little time with us after her rescue before returning to Magvillus. What I can tell you...she'd been investigating the destruction of the previous covenant. When she didn't return from an expedition, I went looking for her. Initially I didn't have much success, but after Fray and Stephen of Bonisagus joined me we managed to track down a band of female raiders who had captured her. From there, we were able to track down Tasia herself, although it still wasn't easy - the leader of the raiders had tried to take precautions against Mentem magic by making sure that only her guards actually knew where she was being held. Fortunately she still had a way of communicating with them, so we were able to follow that thread back."

"Once we found her, she seemed confused and suspicious. She told us that she had been captured whilst she slept after having got into a confontration with the raiders previously, that the raiders were Amazons, and that they had then done something to her which rendered her unable to cast spells but she didn't remember properly what. Her familiar Vrahos was missing, as were her shield grogs. She insisted she didn't want us to do anything then about the people who had captured her - Fray had already turned her guard into a sheep, but that's the worst that's happened so far to any of the raiders involved in the business. Instead she just wanted to report to her superiors, without us. I was worried she was intending to just walk off into the wilderness on her own, so I lent her an arcane connection back to the covenant, which she used to Leap back. We then followed more slowly, and by the time we got back she'd already gone. I wrote to Magvillus, and they told me she had arrived, and also that she had got her familiar back, but very little more."

"If you have any specific questions, I can try to answer them."

Timaios nods as he listens to Gregorius' description of events. He never interrupts and waits for Gregorius to finish.

Finally he says, "Very strange. I don't know what would prompt her to return to Magvillus alone like that. I hope she wasn't affected by some sort of deep-seated enchantment that was hard to detect."

After thinking a bit, he adds, "Would it be an imposition for me to pick up where her investigations left off? Probably remarkably more dangerous for me than for her if I run into those Amazons, of course, but now there are multiple reasons to try to follow this trail. Maybe the Amazons were involved in the collapse of the old covenant."

Gregorius shakes his head, worried. "If she was affected by an enchantment, I'd expect Magvillus' Aegis to be able to resist it even if ours could not - but who knows."

"I do have a bit more information on the Amazons from when we were searching for Tasia - apparently it was an Amazon band that was responsible for the destruction of the previous covenant, but not the specific band that we had found. They live in a sea to the east of where we found them - I'm not sure if that means on an island, or underwater."

"As far as picking up the thread of the investigation goes, I think it is likely to be dangerous. Quite how dangerous depends on your capabilities - how are you at escaping from horseriders, and gathering information without being seen, and do the methods you use extend to your shield grogs as well?"

"There's also the question of unwanted side-effects from the investigation. I'd personally been waiting for confirmation from my House or the Quaesitors before doing anything to escalate the situation - clearly it's not something the Order can just let pass, but my training as a scout always emphasised that it was my place to find things out whilst keeping my head down, not to pre-empt policy decisions. So far I've had a letter from Quaesitor Hadrianus at Magvillus reminding me not to draw undue attention from mundanes, and aid defending out covenant from further attacks from my House."

"In summary, I think there's certainly scope to do more investigation, but we need to be careful about it, and avoid both getting ourselves killed and accidentally starting more than we're ready to handle yet."

"As a Quaesitor I'm interested in getting to the bottom of the situation, for Tasia and for the safety of the Order," replies Timaios. "I'm no expert in the areas you mentioned, but let's be frank: If we wait for an expert to be available and willing, it'll never get done."

Switching direction slightly, he says, "Would you be willing to tell me a bit more about Nova Castra? I don't really know any details about your covenant or what's been going on out in that territory. You're not in immediate danger of assault by Amazons or cavalry, are you?"

It's 60, actually, since Second Sight is a part of Strong Faerie Blood (and that presumably applies to any of the other grab-bag of Virtues she might have as part of SFB). I can cite David Chart for that one:

Her InVi total is only 36 at the moment, though getting the lab finished will raise that somewhat (I'm not certain how much--possibly only a couple of points, for getting rid of the Greater Focus Flaw). I'm not sure how she's going to manage it, honestly, though she has a little time, since Chryse hasn't even learned Latin yet.

Scott

If Timaios joins you can have him help tutor her while you work on your lab total.

"True to a point," agrees Gregorius. "However, doing the wrong thing can be worse than doing nothing - we've already had one maga captured and, presumably, interrogated. In Tasia's case, it wasn't for long enough for them to have had a chance to learn the Parma, but it really frustrates me that I'm not being told what she did tell them. If you're able to get more information out of Magvillus, that would be useful; direct exploration sounds like it would be better left to myself or Fray of Bonisagus - he specialises in shapechanging."

"Nova Castra is built directly on the ruins of a previous covenant, which in turn was built on the ruins of an old graeco-roman settlement at the mouth of the river Don on the Sea of Azov - so we're right out at the fringes of the Order. We were founded only a couple of years ago, so things aren't yet as comfortable as you'll see at mpore established covenants, but we've got a decent aura at the covenant, and there's a weak magic aura that stretches for miles around. As far as the threat of assault goes...the leader of the amazon band we found didn't have any immediate plans, but given what happened to the previous covenant I think it's a serious threat in the medium term."
