Floating should be fine.
Thadeus shares the information with the others. "I can lift one of you with Rise of the Feathery Body and push you through. Ideally, someone that can cross back to tell us where the boundary is on the other side -- assuming it is on the mundane world. If we can cross back from there, the regio becomes much more interesting as a place to establish a covenant."
βDoes it need to be someone with second sight to see the barrier from the other side? If not I will do it.β States Janus
"To be frank, I see it as a plus if it's hard to get in, but easy to get out. It makes the place defensible."
"I don't know. For the first attempt, I would suggest someone with the Sight or something like that. I could go myself, for that matter."
(Can Thadeus see what's on the other side of the boundary?)
It looks like a cavern or tunnel, but it is too dark there to see properly. Only a very faint light revealing some crude stone surface.
He relates the information to the others. "Let me try this, then. I'll be back in a moment."
After casting Lifting the Dangling Puppet on himself, he rises just a few inches above the water surface and gently pushes off from the beach using his staff to cross the regio boundary.
(This is a non stress situation for casting the spell, so I won't bother to roll. Concentration roll, if needed, is 9.)
Thadeus tumbles down into the dark tunnel. He can see faint light far away in both directions and no regio exit. There is not much he can do but walk towards the light in a random direction. He ends up on the West Wideopens. I don't think Thadeus had seen the regio tunnel before, so it takes some time for him to recognise the location, but the main island with the chapel is quite recognisable. He noticed leaving a regio when he exitted the tunnel, but leaving required no special effort or ability.
The others wait for a while, but Thadeus does not return.
So there is no way to renter the regio from there? A one-way regio boundary? Has he ever heard of such a thing? (Magic Theory roll of 10)
Thadeus does not know of any concrete example of such one-way boundary, but it is not outrageously surprising. Regione are very different and many boundaries are strange and erratic, so it should not be that much of a surprise.
On the other hand, the ferryman seemed to imply that the former inhabitants of the island had a way to get there without resorting to him. So there may be another regio entrance somewhere else.
He'll wait some time near the cave opening to the surface to see if the others join him. Hopefully that won't be too long. Unfortunately, he has no way to communicate with them.
In the meantime, he'll talk with the salamander. "How did you find that place we just left? Would you like to live there? I'm not sure yet if this would be a nice place. It is certainly magical enough, but getting there and back is a bit of an annoyance. I like to be able to walk where I'm going, instead of relying on a boat to carry me. If only I could fly, things might be different..."
To be fair, the ferryman said that his passengers used to make their own way back. He did not say anything else on the matter.
Thom steps to the edge of the water, looking at the boundary. [Second Sight: 12]
"I can see it from here. Betula, could you create a raft? Perhaps we could all stand on it and push ourselves out into the water and pass through."
After some discussion and organsiation, Betula conjures up the raft and you are able to follow, and you are able to follow after Thadeus. He is already out of sight, but you saw the direction before you entered, and find him on West Wideopens.
Betula can make a boat too, and you are able to return to camp, and from camp to Ungulus.
Food is still a problem, and you have to choose to delay the journey to forage or arrive half starved. You have the time to spare within the season, and whether you spend it foraging or recovering, matters little to your progress.
... except maybe to Betula's child.
You will arrive at Ungulus in Chapter 7. Feel free to ask questions or wrap up any lose ends en route in this thread.
A few questions:
- How much time passed at camp between our departure and return? (Trying to determine if there was any time distortion, as well as an approximate time it took for the ferryman to bring us to the regio.)
- If there was no distortion, then we may have more food available, since we spent a very successful day gathering some before going into the regio, remember?
- How much xp for the season?
There was no noticeable time warp.
I remembered the previous foraging. It is enough to get you back without starving to death, but not enough to see you back without starving somewhat. Sure, if you are equally effective on the next attempt, a one day delay suffices for comfort.
XP. Oh that's a difficult one. Source quality 14 (same for both storylines). Confidence points, in addition two what comes up in the minutes of fame
- One for taking part in the Giant's Castle
- One for exploring the island of the Council of Eight
- One for taking part in the subterranean lab
- One for exploring the Bath Regio
- One for interacting with Lise
(exploring/taking part should require at least one post contributing to the scene, but I am not going to be difficult on borderline cases)
Foraging for food (Thadeus hunting with his grogs):
- Thadeus unskilled hunting roll: Per 4 + Hunt 0 + die 9 = 13
- Sasso hunting roll as a wolf: Per 1 + Hunt 4 (+1 by smell) + Keen Sense of Smell +3 + die 8 = 17
- Telsa hunting roll as a wolf: Per 0 + Hunt 4 (+1 by smell) + Keen Sense of Smell +3 + die 9 = 17
You take a day foraging and hunting, and get a very healthy diet. Even though the Pomerians tend towards a meaty diet, I am sure there are other foragers to see to Betula's needs.
