Chapter 9: The hunt for Priscus Ex Merinita

"Do you know of any of the defenses that he had put into his sanctum and a tribunal expert found his sigil in the magical residue near our covenant but didn't come to us to invite us to the tribunal that convicted him or tell us about the residue. Only notice of his march. This sounds funny. did anyone here attend the tribunal that marched him or only receive notice of the march?" Tatiana is starting to smell a rat but she wants to be sure.

OOC Code of Hermes: int 3, Code of hermes 1, roll 8=12, doesn't a special tribunal require that all covenants be notified of it to have a chance to attend? Don't queasitors need to inform a covenant when they are investigating it (we learned of the march right after the battle ended.)

OOC: I am back… I think. This procedure does not smell rat. It where properly conducted and Priscus is suspect enough to get marched but I did not take the time to write about the trial. I just wanted to write a story about a hunt for a rough magus. The last story you where the hunted and now you are the hunters. Of course there is still a risk that he where controlled by something far more sinister that a magus of the Order.

I was assuming that it was a legitimate march just missing some of the details

Iacob: I don’t know anythings about the sanctum defences that Priscus put in place or if there are any off importance. All I know is that beneath the door there is a circular ward that seems to block out humans. So I can assume that the took care of his lab cleaning by himself so there is not anyone amongst the staff that can tell you anything of importance.

I see. Well caution should serve us well. Do you happen to know which areas of magic he was most interested in?

OOC
How old is Priscus? it gives a feel for how powerful he is likely to be.

Iacob tells you that he thinks he is about 15 years out of apprenticeship. True age is diffciult to tell but not a day below 35.

Fumidus looks up and says: "Rather young. Is he considered a Master, and if so, do you know what he is known for?"

Iacob: No he has not yet attained the master rank. Regarding his magical abilities I think that he took an keen interest in corpus and some of the elemental arts, perhaps vim and I am sure that he has spent some time studying the tomes I have contributed to our covenants library. If I remember right then aquam or auram but I am not sure. The seasons before he disappeared I think he lent a book about parma magica from the library. If you breach his sanctum the please give it back to me.

"This is most disturbing and why there should not be any books on the Parma around. With that book, he could perhaps train others in the Parma. since he is marched, he has no reason to avoid it. Still a circular ward can perhaps be undone if the circle is broken. We shall have to see what we find at the sanctum." Tatiana is disturbed by this possibility.

Iacob: I think that the circular ward is just for keeping mundane thieves and spies out so be careful before tampering with the ward. If there is nothing more you wish of me I will show you the way.

The sanctum of Priscus is in a separate wing of the covenant and the only entrance is a stout wooden door with a circular ward that runs beneath it. It is impossible to enter the chamber without crossing the ward. The ward is made out of brass and lowered into the stone floor beneath the door. On the door there is a sanctum marker that is supposed to make magi think before entering the chamber. The door is reinforced with iron and looks to strong to move with mundane force, perhaps a battering ram would do but there is to little room outside to use it.

Fumidus asks: "How do we proceed?

We can knock the door and try to enter, or we can create another entrance by eliminating some part of the wall or floor. I might go down the chimney - there must be a chimney in a lab.

We can destroy the circle and use a human or an animal to trigger traps. Before entering, I think, our intellego specialists should have a look at it."

We don't have an intellego specialist. I plan of destroying the door with fairly subtle perdo. Then we spot the circle, see if we can see anything with what intellego vim and second sight we can muster . I expect my parma to hold against most traps and metal weapons will be defeated by my protective spells. So after that I walk in while we all prepare to fast cast defensive spells with the rest of you in overwatch to cover me. Unless someone has a better plan or resources I have forgotten

With no one suggesting an alternate plan Mariella begins casting her spell to destroy the door she takes her time using ceremonial spontaneous magic
15perdo +3 puissant +1 stamina +X Aura +2 artes liberale, I need Pe He 5 so I will try none fatiguing casting

total 27 +aura gives me a level 5 effect and will rot the wood of the door unless it is protected

Fumidus takes smoke form and rides down the chimney to have a look at the inside. He first checks for rising warm air and will emerge only far enough to peak out (hoping not to be noticed by anyone inside).

The door rots and at the same time a yellow sulphurous gas billows out from the chamber and the chimney blocking Fumidus way.

Your circling winds of Protection please Tatiana
Mariella considers this evidence of guilt , she has never heard of junior magi who are not guilty of something actually placing magical defenses on their Sancta

Fumidus is delighted that he is so well equipped to deal with the cloud. He casts a formulaic spell that moves the cloud away from the magi.
He then asks one of the other magi to take control of the cloud, so he can ask it a few questions.

ooc: formulaic spell
"x Move the cloud ReAu 20, harnessed, tethered [moves a cloud, including the character himself in cloud form, as he wishes – but no faster than a cloud during a storm], focus applies sometimes"

Thx to the storyguide for giving Fumidus an opportunity to shine!

Please roll dice with invisible castle, add any modification for not using voice and gestures. I assume that the spell is either touch or sight range and the aura is 5 in the covenant. This could be an important roll so hope for no botches.

Re 2+Au 10+focus 2 (?)+Sta 2+Aura 5+ roll 6= 20-27 (-5 for no gestures, -2 no focus)

The character has unbound tongue. I took flawless magic so he could do stuff without gestures, but since I never wrote a nice and detailedcharsheet, it doesn't say so: I deserve the -5. I'll fix that.

Spell
ReAu
Move the Cloud
Base 3 (There is no decent auram guideline, but it seemed fair), +2 day, +2 voice, tethered, harnessed

If the base is 4, then range decreases to touch (I doubt that a gas cloud can do much to a smoke cloud)
If it is 5, then range is touch and duration diameter

If Fumidus can carry the aegis token he has been supplied with then the following will happened. I assume that you have been given aegis tokens at the covenant before trying to enter this sanctum as the covenants aegis will give you much trouble.

A casting total of 27 will with fatigue give you the possibility to cast a lv. 13,5 spell which will give you lv. 10 and at touch range it seems fair that you can move this strange cloud.

Fumidus cast his spell and force the sulphurous yellow cloud to billow out through the chimney and the path is clear.

If Fumidus can’t carry the aegis token then his spells will be too weak and fail to have any effect. It is an old covenant with an aegis of at least lv. 40…

If this happens and Mariella and/or Tatianas attempt to save themselves fail then they will suffer a CrAu effect with +20 in penetration. Should the spell penetrate then they both will have to take a stress dice + stamina and beat 6+ or lose a fatigue level. A test is rolled every turn and it turns into wound when conscious is lost, at first a light wound and from there it gets worse.
