Chapter One: Getting there is half the fun . . .

Ah...oops! That would be a botch. Unless this isn't a stress die? I rolled a 0/10 and she has no bonus from her stats and abilities.

At any rate, when/if she sees archers aiming at the magi, she'll be casting her next spell, Arc of the Fiery Ribbons on the group of archers. + 32 casting total.

Akoe will scurry over to Mr. Gaudy's side, so Mr. Gaudy is between Akoe and Sinmore with about three paces back from Mr. Gaudy. He'll step back into his human skin, trying to stay in Mr. Gaudy's blind spot, since Mr. Gaudy should be turned towards Sinmore. Akoe will move his hands and shape the powers he'll need. Then he'll reach forward and touch Mr. Gaudy.

Going for a spontaneous effect, ReCo Lvl 10 "Transport the target instantly up to 5 paces". Want to send Mr. Gaudy out over the rail and into the air above the water. ReCo +13/2(fatiguing myself)=6

Elarion's attention is focused on the back end of the ship, and he seems totally unaware of the archers training in on him from the deck above. (Roll result 2: 1 +1 per +0 awareness; invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1788560/)

When Elarion becomes alerted to the archers' presence, he'll attempt to cast Wizard's Sidestep (ReIm 10), casting total +17.

Claudius rolls a 1D10+(Perception+1)+(Awareness+1)=5.

Claudius will be kind of ticked about the archers, so any he sees drawing down on him will get hit with a spontaneous Perdo Mentem, using fatigue, against their knowledge of archery. The rough aim is about Diameter duration and to eliminate as much as possible,, but as long as it gets the archer to suddenly be confounded by the bow in his hands, or forget how to aim, Claudius will be happy.

Oblivious to their threat, the magi in the boat continue to stare stunned at the flaming wreckage scattered across the galley. Sinmore, her huge form casting wild shadows in the flickering light of the flames, moves about the deck, doing what she can to preserve the "prize".

In the meantime, the archers on the foredeck draw, and fire a volley into the boat below. I'm going to deal with this as if the group in the boat had the same effect as the wizard's sidestep. While the archers don't know exactly where you are, they know you are there, and are within a contained area (the boat). The Magi in the boat comprise an untrained group, and the best defence you can muster is +0, with an additional +9, The archers comprise a trained group of 4 (including the leader) and an untrained group of 4. Both groups open fire.

The archers, the pirate leader, and the magi in the boat stare stupified, as arrows whistle through the air, smashing into the boat, the gunwhales, and the water around it, but somehow miraculously miss the magi. Elarion gulps at the arrowhead buried to the shaft between the fingers of his right hand.

:open_mouth:, just :open_mouth:

Sinmore, noticing the arrow vollies, turns to the archers, and moves toward them, hands spread out to cast. As she does so, the pirate officer, cursing his luck, moves up behind her, little noticing Akoe creeping up behind in turn.

Qcipher, another awareness + perception please. Warjowski, I need a brawl attack roll from you.

Meanwhile, as those of you in the boat recover, your danger becomes apparant. Elarion gestures, muttering in latin, and seems suddenly to displace across the boat. Claudius, enraged, steps forward, points toward the archers, and shouts in Latin.

ThePedant, give me a roll, please, for the PeMe effect.

Sinmoe rolls a 5 total for that. invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1789265/

Got a 12 on my brawl roll invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1789353/

Warjowski, it's a combat stress die, so a 10 = a possible botch. You need another two 1d10 rolls. Don't roll zero!

Yeah, that would make a difference, wouldn't it?

Sorry. Long day. No botch. 2,2 invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1789429/

Valerius still keeps to the back as his soldaes can handle the fight. If there is a chance he might use the invisible sling of Vilano to strike against some enemy.

Octavius is stunned by his brush with death, or at least acute pain, and he stares at the arrow lodged in the boat not a pace from his foot in horrified facination. Jolted out of his stupor by Elarion's quick spellcasting response to the now obvious peril, Octavius decides his sodale's action appropriate and follows suit. Chanting briefly, gesturing and ending with a hearty swig from his flask, Octavius attemps to cast a upon himself.

Wizard's Sidestep ReIm 10 (Re +6, Im +0, Sta +1 =7)

PeMe roll of 29 (not including aura bonus if any or gestures/voice bonus), as follows:

5 (D10) + 5 (Pe) + 11 (Me) + 3 (Puiss Pe) + 3 (Puiss Me) + 2 (INT)

Depending on how winded Claudius feels, and how successful the spell was, he'll either do that again on another target or, if he's tired or it was unsuccessful, switch to Touch of the Feather to harry the archers while preserving his energy (and making it easier for him to take cover in the boat).

As Claudius cuts loose with his spell, the foredeck archers begin fumbling with their bows. While they seem to still know which direction to point the arrow, their ability to coordinate and aim is clearly impaired.

Octavius, like Elarion before him, blinks to another portion of the boat (or would, if he wasn't invisible already  )

Akoe, shifting to his human form, stumbles as he tries to lay hands on the pirate, and misses. He does, however, manage to attract the pirate's attention, who whirls, his eyes lighting up at this new target. The pirate raises his sword menacingly, backlit by the lurid glow from the burning midsection of the galley.

Although she was oblivious to the approaching captain, Sinmore is fully aware of her target. A roar of flame shoots out from her spread hands, and engulfs the archers.

Here's a question. p86 of ArM5 indicates that only spells which avoid magic resistance by being indirect require to hit rolls. This is, IIRC, significantly different than in 4th edition, as it suggests spells like Pilum of fire or Arc of Fiery Ribbons now hit automatically. Is this the case?

Here's the text of the spell:

A dozen ribbons of flame leap from your hands and fly out as far as your voice carries, covering a 60 degree arc. All those in the arc take +10 damage.

So it doesn't answer your general question, but for this specific spell, any pirates that are in that 60 degrees were nailed without a roll.

Akoe will nod his head. "Sword first."

Throwing another spontaneous spell then, fast casting. Spasm of the Uncontrolled Hands, but bringing it down to a momentary effect. Just want Gaudy to drop the sword. Casting total would be Re+8 Co+5 Fast Cast -10. Fatiguing if possible.

For what it's worth:

Pg 86 says, "However, while spells always hit their targets, indirect effects may not reach the true target, they must be aimed"

The target of the Arc spell would be the pirates. The target of say, Strike of the Angered Branch would be the branch which is supposed to hit the target.

I'm reading pg 86 as a way of making sure the target has some kind of chance against a spell, whether it be MR from a direct spell or a targeting roll vs an indirect attack.

Akoe's hands dart in a complex pattern, and the pirate leader's sword flies off with a "whanggg" sound. Cursing in disbelief, the pirate turns, and darts for the edge of the galley, throwing himself over the side, and disappearing below the waves.

Meanwhile, at the bow, Sinmore's spell engulfs the archers, who's pitiful screams are soon smothered by the popping sounds of charred flesh.

Most of the galley is now in flames, and the few surviving pirates have begun throwing themselves over board. Some swim for whatever bits of wreckage they can find, while others simply disaapear below the waves.

Several, however, see the magi's boat, and desperately begin to swim towards it.

Claudius:

If the answer is no, Claudius will cast Touch of the Feather on the closest swimming pirates so that their swimming is interrupted, and hopefully they start swallowing water. If that doesn't work, they're getting put to sleep on the high seas.

Otherwise, Claudius will just put them to sleep once they reach the boat.

Sinmore seemed about to draw her little sister, but when she sees the pirates fleeing she heads over to the side of the railing where the rowboat is. Upon seeing the pirates swimming for it she calls out in her husky voice:

"Hey!" and her right hand becomes sheathed in flame while with her left she makes a slow 'no no' geture as a menacing smile appears on her lips.

Using a Spontaneous Cr Ig (no fatigue) to produce the flame, her base is level 6.

Concerned that the surviving pirates may swamp the small boat, Elarion begins casting Panic of the Trembling Heart (CrMe 15) (casting total +9; Cr 5, Me 5 Sta -1), targeteding those closest to the boat first.

Feeling doubly protected now that he cast Wizard's Sidestep upon himself, Octavius stands watch on the small boat, ready to give aid where needed. His stomach rolls as he watches the archers get reduced to blackend lumps, the stench of burned flesh leaving a sour taste in his mouth. Spitting over the side, Octavius turns back to the ship to see pirates leaping off and into the ocean, trying to flee the conflaguration. Frowning slightly at the thought of loosing the galley to fire, he flexes his fingers and turns his head from side to side, making his neck pop a few times. Pushing up his sleeves, Octavius starts chanting loudly as he makes the gestures for Creo and Terram, finishing the spell off with a determined drink from his flask, casting his spell at the deck of the ship where the fires are burning.
