I haven't checked this yet (although I don't think it takes into account all of the previous comments - in particular, it would be good to get some fluff on the character's background, personality and goals, and the virtues and flaws - generally the first thing I look at - are still very late on the character sheet).

How are you viewing the Restiction as working exactly? I assume you mean "restricted when in or on a body of water" rather than "resticted when not in or on a body of water", which is what the wording as is implies to me, but is the problem when you're in that situation, or your target is? I think I prefer the latter, although either is going to make sea voyages unpleasant.

I do intend him to be incapable of magic on or in bodies of water such as on sea voyages or when pulled in to a river etc.

As to presentation, it covers original character at age 25, advancement of 22 years and then character at age 47. Do you want a post of just the final position as well?

I will post the character story later today. I have been reluctant given my perception that my character build will be rejected, given the comments over the past week or so.

That can wait until the final character sheet is ready to be posted into the Magi thread. I was thinking more of the way that the usual layout for character sheets is:

  • Virtues and Flaws
  • Personality traits and reputation
  • Combat, fatigue, wound penalties
  • Abilities
  • Arts
  • Twilight scars, equipment, encumbrance
  • Spells
  • Appearance

Whereas the current layout has, in particular, the virtues and flaws after the Arts and Abilities - which is mildly irritating to read, because it means you have to scroll through half the character sheet to find the thing I usually want to look at first (because the virtues and flaws can easily affect all the other totals, as well as giving a good overal idea of what the character build is aiming for).

It's not a big thing, and I'm not saying things have to be in exactly the specific order (very few sheets are, and the virtues and flaws do at least appear to be above the spells now, although the table layout does aggravate the issue by taking more space so you have to scroll further to find things), but it would make the sheet easier to read if future versions were reordered.

...How much were you thinking of writing? I only had a paragraph or two in mind.

The bit I would have been tempted to leave until later is the post gauntlet advancement - I generally find that it's a considerable hassle, and it's best to get the foundation agreed before moving onto it to avoid unnecessary rework.

Draft New Concept for a companion

Galen was born in Constantinople in 1186 to a moderately wealthy merchant family who dealt in a variety of household goods from across the near east. He was a bright, well spoken young man and his family paid for a solid education for him. All changed in 1204 when the crusade arrived. Like all able bodied men he was assigned to a militia unit and taught the use of the crossbow. The siege was a nightmare as was the final assault. He and his unit where assigned a large stretch of wall to defend when they where joined by a group of scholarly men and women. What happened next was the stuff of nightmare. The group began to chant and great apparitions appeared and flew to the enemy lines causing much mayhem. The sight of such obvious magics panicked the already nervous militia and they fled the walls to escape the unnatural acts. It was here that the crusaders made their entry to the city and the sack began. His actions in the siege left him doubting his own abilities for the rest of his life. Galen fled the city on one of his families boats and they sailed for weeks, making landfall in Marseilles, where the family had some business interests. Arrangements were made and Galen was sent to Paris to complete his studies, finding a real talent for languages. Years later he returned to the family business and served them as a translator in the Holy Land and North Africa where he further refined his language skills. He travelled extensively in these areas for a number of years. His travels finally took him back to Constantinople but all the family holdings where either gone or in the hands of Venetian merchants who had no interest in listening to claims of old property rights. Using old contacts Galen began to rebuild the family networks along the eastern regions of the Byzantine empire. Serving time as a translator in Jewish quarter in Jerusalem and at the court in Aleppo Galen served his family interests well. His luck changed when on a trip across the far reaches of the empire in the lands of Ukraine where he was captured by xx. When he is rescued by the covenant he will be very very grateful for his life and liberty and will look to repay that with service.

I hope you won't mind my noting that, if I were out to create a fabulously munchkinized language teacher, he'd look a lot like this. So my question is, aside from providing us with a free teacher, how's he going to fit into the saga? I mean, what kinds of adventures do you see him participating in?

I see him being an ambassador and being able to contribute to combat if required, hence the warrior virtue. He is designed as a translator and to allow non Latin books to be introduced as he obtains them and converts them to Latin. I did have exactly your point in mind when I designed him as I don't want someone who just sits in the covenant waiting for the other people to ask him to teach them.

Another option would be to make him a grog and make him even less rounded, removing the teaching, combat and philosophae skills all together but keeping the translation theme.

I can see where MTKnife is coming from. I'd prefer not to have him as a grog - I don't really like trying to heavily optimise our covenant staff. If he (or some version of him) does exist, it should be because he's a character you genuinely want to spend time playing. What sort of stories do you want with him as the focus? What are his goals, beyond just "help the covenant"?

Who are you proposing for him to get made an ambassador to? The amazons seems unlikely at this stage in the game (not least because he's male, but a female version would probably clash with Asena), but we're not really interacting with any other political groups he'd make sense as a point of contact for.

His martial skills look more like "stick him on a wall in emergency" than "bring him along as one of our fighters", especially given his fear of overt magic, which is likely to be flying around in any conflict involving the magi. In fact, I can see him deciding that he'd really quite like to repay his debt somewhere else.

How much time did he spend with the Amazons, and what did he learn whilst there?

At what point will he see his debt to the covenant as repaid?

I almost always create "efficient" characters in most systems I play and I can see how that can appear as over optimisation. I think this concept is dead in the water so I will go back to the drawing board and think what else I would find be interesting to play.

I tend to think that creating highly optimised characters is a fun subgame. However, it's not necessarily the same game as creating characters for actual play - you need to "optimise" towards a different goal in that case.

I guess I am trying to find a concept that allows play when fighting is not the main objective as my mage can take care of that aspect. Maybe a priest who found writings on the the banishing major supernatural virtue and upon learning this "forbidden" lore used it to deal with the unquiet dead? He could have been "exiled" to this distant outpost of the empire as punishment once his superiors discovered his nocturnal practices vs the restless dead? He would be the priest in a nearby village or small town? Thoughts?

You could certainly play a priest, although depending on the Realm Alignment of his Virtue I'm not sure "reading it from a book" works (it'd only work for Magic if he had the Gift, and for the Divine if he had True Faith. Infernal is easier, but probably not the way to go). Is there any particular reason you want him in to be in trouble with his superiors, though? Exorcist is an actual position in the church (at least the Catholic Church - I'm fuzzier about the Orthodox one), and the Donotores were Divinely inspired. If his superiors did think he was doing something dodgy, I'd imagine they'd want him where they could keep an eye on him.

As far as where he's based, the local village wouldn't work, as they're muslims. The nearest Christian settlement is going to be Tana, which is essentially a Venetian trading outpost on the other side of the Don delta (with the major "goods" being furs and slaves). One infernal aura there has already appeared in play, albeit without anyone really registering it.

Main difficulty would be to get him interacting with the covenant (although they are a whole community of at-least-nominally-Christians without spiritual support).

Ok, I will work with this information in mind.

I don't actually mind optimization, as long as, (1) it doesn't overshadow the other characters, and (2) the character fits into the story and will be interesting in play. I should note that Viola wields ridiculously powerful spontaneous magic, including a couple of house-rule Virtues (the result of a 3rd to 4th edition conversion), but she also doesn't want to come out of her lab, and she's almost pathologically averse to actually casting powerful sponts, due to a fear of the warping that would result from any botch.

I have had a good read of HoH:S around the banishing virtue and I can't find the requirement to have true faith before an ungifted person can learn it. It does say on page 119 that they may possess true faith. Is the campaign ruling true faith is required? Don't really want to take both as it does not align with the concept. If need both I have a viable concept without either.

You don't have to have True Faith to have Banishing. You do need to have it to learn a Divine Supernatural Ability by gaining 5xp in it (RoP:D pg 47), in a similar way to the way that having the Gift allows you to learn new Magical Supernatural Abilities by gaining 5xp in them. That was the method that "read it from a book" implied to me. However, there are other ways to gain Divine virtues - Banishing in particular has a group of 3 saints who have a history of handing it out in visions.

As JesseHeinig hasn't managed to get stats done for Chryse, and it's about time for her to enter play, I've had a go myself. This is the stats for her at Tribunal; her future advancement is going to be heavily dependant on what Viola has her do, so I haven't attempted to include it.

Note that her transition of maturity is between ages 14 and 15. If the groundwork has been properly laid, this should his her the opportunity to swap out some of her more crippling flaws.
