Covenant Economics: Draft & Discussion

Here is my first take at an economic breakdown for the Covenant. Feedback and discussion welcome as always.

Economic Tracker

Part I: The Demographic Roster (Inhabitant Points)

Magi (5): 25 points. (Standard upkeep for magi living comfortably is 5 points each).

Specialists (13): 26 points. (2 points each. This includes Bailiff Sean O'Farrell, Steward Tadhg O'Ceallaigh, Marshal Berthold, Chamberlain Gillean, Scholar Diarmaid, Sir Raymond, Brother Joseph, Brighid, and 5 scriptorium clerks).

The Turb (32): 32 points. (1 point per standard or professional grog).

8 Veteran Fighters (Marshal Berthold's core professional guard, donated from each patron Covenant).
4 Veteran Fighters (Sir Raymond's personal retinue, heavy cavalry).
20 Criminal Mercenaries (Smugglers, brigands, and river pirates).

Warhorses (5): 5 points. (1 point per horse)(These belong specifically to Sir Raymond and his personal retinue of four heavy cavalry/knights).

Because the eastern farmers and Crannogmen fishermen are classified as independent income sources rather than internal covenant laborers, they are excluded from the demographics and cost saving sections.

Base Subtotal: 88 points.

Support Staff

Servants (18): 18 points. (Formula: 2 servants required for every 10 points of base inhabitants. 88 / 10 = 8.8 x 2 = 17.6, rounded to 18).
Teamsters (11): 11 points. (Formula: 1 teamster required for every 10 points of inhabitants calculated so far. 88 base + 18 servants = 106. 106 / 10 = 10.6, rounded to 10).

Narrative Note: 2 Teamsters haul goods on Inchmore Island. The other 9 serve as river bargemen, operating the Covenant's shallow draft barges on Lough Ree and the River Shannon to serve the same logistical function as well as being part of the Bailiff's trade operations.

Total Inhabitant Points: 117 points.

Part II: Annual Mundane Income

Inchmore diversifies its wealth across three distinct enterprises, insulating it from single points of failure.

Total Gross Income: 180 Mythic Pounds.

The Alodial Trade Hub (Typical Source): 100 Pounds. Managed by Bailiff Sean O'Farrell, this represents tax-exempt river smuggling and trade operations up and down the river as well as in the massive Athlone markets. These operations actively employ and satisfy our 20 Criminals/Mercenaries.

The Agharanagh Farms (Lesser Source): 40 Pounds. Agricultural surpluses gathered from the eastern hamlet and tenant farms.

The Crannogmen Fleet (Lesser Source): 40 Pounds. The fishing surplus caught by the Crannogmen villagers on the northern shore of the island.

Part III: Annual Gross Expenditures

Total Gross Expenditure: 164 Mythic Pounds.

Buildings: 21 Pounds. (Formula: 1 pound per 10 inhabitant points = 12 base. Added to this is 9 pounds to maintain Boons: Castle Major [+5], Edifice Minor [+2], and Outbuildings Minor [+2]).
Consumables: 23 Pounds. (Formula: 2 pounds for every 10 inhabitant points. 11.7 x 2 = 23.4, rounded to 23. This covers wax, fuel, barrels, and minor tools).
Provisions: 59 Pounds. (Formula: 5 pounds for every 10 inhabitant points. 11.7 x 5 = 58.5, rounded to 59. This covers food, ale, and horse fodder).
Wages: 35 Pounds. (Formula: 2 pounds for every 10 inhabitant points = 23.4, rounded to 23 pounds. 12 pounds additional for 12 veteran fighters).

Note Regarding Criminals/Mercenaries: The 20 Criminals/Mercenaries do not require the premium wage because they are paid in "booty" generated via the Bailiff's trade/smuggling activities.

Laboratories: 5 Pounds. (Formula: 1 pound per 10 points of laboratory upkeep. Inchmore maintains 5 unrefined cave laboratories at 10 points each = 50 points).
Weapons & Armor: 1 Pound. (Formula: 1 pound per 320 points of armory. Sir Raymond and his retinue have heavy gear (24 x 5: 96) plus 28 turb members equipped with partial armor and weapons (12 pts each) equals 456 points. 456 / 320 = 1.425, rounded to 1).
Writing Materials: 11 Pounds. (Formula: 1 pound per magus or scribe. This covers the 5 magi, Scholar Diarmaid, and the 5 scriptorium clerks).
Church Tithes: 8 Pounds. (10% religious tax strictly calculated against the 80 pounds generated by visible agricultural and fishing yields).
The Pound of Enumerus: 1 Pound.

Part IV: The Bottom Line

Surplus: +16 Mythic Pounds (180 Income - 164 Expenditure).

Economic Note: I am waiving any Inflation impact at this time because we are not distorting the economy, merely subsisting. Also the nearby city of Athlone is a large market and easily absorbs our trade.
