Nobody has described a standard adventuring gear for their characters which include rope, nobody put together a plan for organizing this trip which included rope. Now you are at the base of the icy cliff facing the fact that you could have been better organized.

It's hard to say without testing the ice, though climbing equipment would have been useful. Certainly the ice is too smooth to get a grip on it without either breaking it or some form of supernatural aid.
