Gavin ex Miscellanea

Swapped a feat and a spell.

The feat is from HMRE, and plays into his faerie upbringing and hermetic alchemy.

Groot, familiar of Gavin

A small man made of wood. He looks much like a tiny person, though his hair is made of leaves and his skin is smooth tan bark. He was created as a gift from Gavin's mother upon her son's gauntlet, to serve as a guide and assistant to the new magus. For all that he is a fabricated creature, however, Groot is intensely curious and meddlesome in mortal matters around the covenant.

Did I ever spend my 75 personal build points? I can't find where it's posted if I did.

Check for PB's posts. PB has done a few summaries recently.

I don't see that you did. (My spreadsheet for personal build points is blank under your column). In fact, the only Personal Build Points I have on there are callen and Silveroak.

I realize that I totally forgot I needed a LR. Here is a revised background including the LR. Unless we can buy one, in which case Gavin would have totally done that.

I'm not sure if I get to distill vis for free in these lab seasons. But if I can, that would be:

[strike]Golden Orange Tree of the Hesperides
This potted orange tree was reputed to have been grown from one of the seeds of the original golden 'apple' (actually an orange) that began the Trojan War. Legend has it that the original fruit had four pips, each of which sprouted into a fruit-bearing tree. This tree grows well in any climate, even that of the chilly Scottish moors, and bears fruit every winter. The bulk of the harvest is normal oranges, save one golden orange that has four pips, reminiscent of its predecessor. However, unlike the original orange, the pips of this fruit have never been able to sprout a new tree. Instead, each contains one pawn of Creo vis. The flesh of the golden orange is reputed to have life-sustaining powers. Tradition is it that the wedges of this fruit are distributed to the grogs of the covenant each Winter Solstice. This tree was a gauntlet gift from Gavin's parens.
Vis Production: 4 Creo each Winter[/strike]

I'm an idiot. I forgot that I have Strong Faerie Blood and don't start aging until age 50.

So drop the LR and put back:

Instill Mental Communication (familiar-to-master) into familiar bond (CrMe 15) [-2 Me vis]
LT = 10 (Cr) + 0 (Me) + 3 (Int) + 3 (IG) + 3 (Aura) + 8 (MT) + 6 (familiar) = 33

This is way late, but I wouldn't think so. Faerie can outright grant the Gift which could then be used to make a Magic Being. There are no rules that say they couldn't have a power that mimics a Creo Animal for making a Magic Animal. We also have the reverse occurring, with Faerie Magic using their magic to make Faerie creatures.

I had gone to the wiki to try to read a description of Gavin before responding in another thread. I noticed five Items of Quality as opposed to the one (Alembic of Quality) mentioned above. Nothing wrong with a bunch of them. However, most of them don't seem to follow the rules for Items of Quality at all:

Alembic of Quality (Container): +5 to create or transform within
Glove of Quality: +4 to manipulate at a distance; +4 for things by touch, bonus to affect
Mirror of Quality; +7 with illusions; +6 to display images; +5 to see truth; +3 to summon/bind ghosts
Quill of Quality: +7 for scribing
Wand of Quality: +4 to control things at a distance; +4 to destroy things at a distance; +3 to project bolt or other missile; +2 to repel things

You get one bonus (not all of them) for what the tool is used to do (not just anything in general). So the Alembic of Quality would theoretically give +5 to rolls to distill things within it. That's fine. And the Quill of Quality can give +7 to rolls scribing with it. No problem there, but do be warned that Items of Quality are not super-durable. You may want to enchant that quill before using it. However, the other three are all problematic. Are you using a wand as a tool? I suppose you might be if you were using it to cast spells, but you use your ring to cast spells. What sort of glove is it? Manipulation at a distance with a tool that is a glove seems difficult, but I can definitely see purposes for the latter bonus. For example, a fencing glove that gives you a bonus to hold onto the sword. A mirror could also be used, but a lot of those seem difficult, and I'm not sure how often you'll be doing rolls with a mirror.

I will confess that I'm a bit shaky on how items of quality work. I've tried to model my use on how I've seen others use them both here and in other sagas. But even then, I never feel like I know what's going on. The one truism seems to be that when other people get them and I don't, they're awesome. But when I get them, they're okay.

If it's easier for me to just drop them and pick something else, I'd be fine with that.

Oh, and the change in number is because the discussion of build points ended up moving to another thread where things got changed.

Here is what you need:

The tool/item and profession/trade is pretty broad, and there is nothing limiting it to mundane professions/trades. But the bonus applies specifically to rolls using the item in a manner appropriate to the bonus. The bonus being to rolls is rather important. It won't apply to lab totals, nor to things like checking a craft level to see what the crafting limit is. It can be really good if you find the right spot to apply a bonus to a roll and choose an appropriate tool. For example, a suit of armor providing +7 to Soak rolls could really save you when you're hit by a spell doing a lot of damage, even if it doesn't help against a sword.

FYI: I've updated the wiki with a list of one-shot items that Gavin created in Spring 1220. (It's a page linked from Gavin's character sheet.) I'm not listing them here because the formatting is so much easier on the wiki.
