This is a huge Rule 1 violation but......

Of course there were many stories and legends of giant spiders. An epic ritual which was intended to destroy a cabal of shady influential people called the Spider's Web, botched. Instead of killing the Illuminati like Spider's Web, the ritual killed all giant spiders and destroyed all records of their existence.

You can always make the story fit the world.......
