Background

Adeline was born in the town of Ay, along the river Marne south of Reims. Her father was a clerk there, keeping the account books for a number of tanning and weaving businesses. The girl was born with a weak right leg, which made moving around difficult for her and reduced her prospects for marriage, so her father taught her her letters so that she could eventually earn a living.

Unfortunately, while the family was travelling to Reims with a group of merchants, they were attacked by a band of brigands and her parents killed. She spent several weeks in captivity, forced to cook and clean for the brigands, but was rescued when two magi along with their grogs dispatched her captors and their leader. Bereft of any close family, she pledged herself her savior, Quintus Clusius of House Jerbiton. (This happened in Fall 1199)

Adeline spent a bit over a year at Confluensis, and followed Quintus Clusius when he moved to Triamore and stayed there four more years. During that time, she received additional training from Triamore's librarian, learning Latin as well as the basics of Magic Theory and some arcane lores. This allowed her to help gather and make copies for the new covenant.

She arrived at Tugurium in Winter 1204, after a season on the road.

Appearance

A rather pretty slender woman of with wide hips and dark brown hair, Adeline tends to stay in the shadow of Clusius, to whom she is utterly devoted. Despite rumors that she was the magus' bed warmer when they lived at Triamore, she has never worked up enough courage to approach him in that way. She suffers from a persistent stutter and her shyness usually means she keeps her brown eyes down when adressing most people.

Background

Louis was born in Reims. His father was a charioteer, driving his wagon for merchants carrying their goods from town to town. Louis was an only child, his mother having died from a coughing sickness when Louis was only 6. After his mother's death, Louis' father had taken to bringin Louis along during his trips instead of leaving him at home, so the boy learned his profession from an early age.

Louis was 13 when their merchant train was attacked by a group of brigands. His father was severely wounded, and without proper care died a few weeks later. Louis himself was treated reasonably well by the brigands at first, who were perhaps hoping he would become one of theirs with time, but still forced to work for them and take care of their horses. He tried escaping once after his father's death, but was beaten badly for his trouble.

Before his burgeoning hatred drove Louis to some desperate and empty gesture of defiance, two magi along with their grogs dispatched the brigands and their leader. Vowing that he would learn who to fight, the strapping lad pledged himself to one of the magi, Quintus Clusius of House Jerbiton. (This happened in Fall 1199)

Louis began his training at Confluensis, and followed Quintus Clusius when he moved to Triamore and stayed there four more years. During that time, he received additional training from Triamore's turb and learned a bit of Latin.

He arrived at Tugurium in Winter 1204, after a season on the road.

Tall and strong, Louis has dark brown hair and brown eyes.

*Vincent has always been exceptionally unfortunate. The GM can apply a -1 to -3 modifier on simple and stress rolls depending upon how great a factor luck is in the situation. Essentially the opposite of the Luck Virtue.

Background

Vincent was a younger son of a struggling merchant family in Brittany. He often found himself the target of trouble, having to learn to trust his own guts rather than the whims of fortune. Vincent grew up knowing much more about lying, scheming and swordplay than he did of markets or commodities, and so he decided to strike out and help the first person he came across in need of a good blade.

To Vincent's misfortune, he first ran into the Magus Phorcys Tytali, and even though Vincent was dreadfully afraid of the mysterious individual, he accepted the opportunity to see something new. The Magus brought Vincent to Exspectatio, where Vincent served as a shield grog. Phorcys recognized Vincent's unlucky nature, and more or less released him from service, as he was a bit of a liability. Vincent next found himself working for Magus after Magus, usually until he made some sort of embarrassing mistake. It wasn't until he ended up working for the most loathsome Magus Vincent had ever met that he found some sort of stability. Although Perion seems far less interested in destroying his rivals than the other Tytali Vincent has known, he can't help but feel that something about Perion is far more menacing than the typical destructive spats of the other Magi. He has accompanied Perion to Tugurium.

Appearance

Vincent has a thin head of light brown hair, a wide nose, and a grin that is missing a couple teeth. He is above average in height, but not exceptionally so. As he has grown older, he has started to get a bit of a beer belly.

Background

Edwardo was born to a relatively rich family, his father managed to attain the status of a Caballero Villanos in Aragon. However, he had the excellent fortune of many of his sons surviving to childhood. As a result, Edwardo was the fifth son of a moderately wealthy man. He grew up learning some of the skills of a warrior at his father's side, but ultimately he was left without inheritance or great status.

He decided to become a warrior, but without his own equipment, he failed to find a place in the retinue of any noble lord. At first, he starved and lived as an outcast on the street. Then he slid further down the social scale to become a bandit, and not a very good one. He liked people and hated to steal from those who could not afford it, preferring wealthy targets.

These wealthy folk were either skilled combatants or could hire them, so Edwardo failed. He was captured swiftly and slated for execution. However, the strangest thing happened. A woman from the Holy Roman Empire appeared and promised to get him free in exchange for a pledge of loyalty. He immediately didn't trust her, but faced with the hangman's noose, he accepted.

Little did he know that he was coming into the service of a hoplite. He was trained to be able to fight as a group with his fellow hoplites, many of whom had similar stories of being rescued from penury or death by the woman. She trained him hard, but was a generous mistress, for all it rankled to be commanded by a witch. With time he found his place in the turb she had acquired and learned the ways of combat at a magus' side.

During one particularly nasty showdown with some sort of faerie, however, there was some sort of magical accident, and he found that he was "warped" as she described it. Apparently the magic had effected him too much, and now whenever he walks into an area associated with the creatures he starts to bleed and suffer.

Having been saved from certain death, he found that his worries in life have largely evaporated. He has seen the worse, and providence delivered him to something better. This has made him worryingly willing to trust to chance. The only habit of caution is obvious when he has a sword in his hand, and his father's long years of drilling him show.

Appearance

A good looking man, with strong muscles and a chislled jaw. He is quick for his size and quick to smile, with bright blue eyes and the hawk nose well known of many of iberian descent.

Background

Heinrich is a third son of a minor noble from the Mostviertel (Austria). He was an aggressive boy, and strong like an ox, so he was predestined to become a knight. Only his mother, a French noblewoman who had been married away far from home for political reasons, tried to keep him off the battlefield by teaching him her language and the basics of the law.
When troups from the 4th crusade came by, they were looking for young fighting men with nothing to do but fighting at one tiurnament after the other. Their promises were doubly tempting: Land and glory in the east, plus fighting for the good of your soul.
At the Sack of Constantinopel, they all drank to courage and he bragged to his unit before the battle of their rewards in plundering and raping, hoping to screw the soldiers' courage to the sticking point. But this was no tournament or campfire for big words. This was war at its ugliest. Once through the breach, his words turned prophetic. He himself killed women and children in his battlelust, but he saw others drag nuns into dark corners and piss onto church altars.
And then something in him broke: He didn't want to kill anymore. But he knew fully well that fighting was his only talent that he was responsible for this butchery. He didn't want to turn to a God that let these things happen in His name.
And his darkest hour, when he cried out his desperation to the world, Eikona appeared, beautiful and unafraid, reminding him of his mother. She asked him in French why he was crying, and he told her, and she sat down next to him, and they both cried.
Then she offered him a job as her bodyguard: He would never have to kill innocents again, she promised, but protect her from aggression, and free the world from monsters and demons. It was a way for him to put his talent to a good use and to do penance for his sins.
He now uses his name in Latin to remind himself he is a different man.

Appearance

Henricus isn't particularly tall, but so broad you can call him squat. his hands are large. He has dark hair, the kind of idiot cut known from early Robin Hood movies, and is icredibly hairy all over (his nick is bound to be Hairy). His eyes are a watery blue and look sad and gentle. He speaks slowly and quietly, with a voice you'd more expect in a preacher than in a muscle-covered war machine. He keeps his equipment in working shape, but refuses to fetishize it like many other knights. He sometimes talks to his destrier Paulus.

Background

Simon is the middle son of Geffrey le Blanc, one of the oldest grogs of Augustus Nero. Young and dying to prove himself, when Augustus asked for voluntaries to serve under Regulus he was the first to offer “his name, his cause, his blade, his blood”, as he has put it himself. He expects to, some day, deserve the same level of respect that his father has from the other grogs, and considers a big personal victory that Regulus chose him.

Regulus decision was driven by Argos necessities: someone not too old or bulky (Argus still gets a bit uncomfortable next to large men), who seemed minimally competent and could possibly be a good role model for a young boy.

Appearance

A blond young man with dark eyes and a nose that was broken at least twice before, Simon is carefree, confident and at the same time, eager to please magi, specially Regulus.

Background

Dagny was born in the city of Augsburg, daughter of a swordsmith. Her father had no sons, so he taught her the trade, but as she got older, and skilled enough to be named journeyman, she found that it wasn't an option, even though her skills surpassed any of her peers. The only way for her to become a craftsman was to "sponsor" a man, and do work under his name, which she found distasteful for a number of reasons. Refusing to get married just so she could practice her trade, she took to the roads, hoping to find a way to settle down and practice her craft.

She got lost often, and had dangerous encounters, but her hammer and her broad shoulders always proved protection enough. But while she could find work at simple labor, she found it impossible to start a smithy, or find work in one.

Increasingly desperate, she eventually sought employment with the strange people who wore robes and lived apart from everyone, in a manor house called Fengheld. Due to her reaction to the Gift, and poor social skills, she wasn't clear about her trade, but she was clearly big and strong, so the covenant recruited Dagny as a grog, training her in the sword. She didn't fit in well, though, and eventually she was sent to Durenmar, where she met a tiny magus named Wolfgang. She was at his side for the short-lived war in the northern reaches of Norway, and trapped with him for an entire winter, during which time they became good friends. She still finds him strange, but they've saved each others' lives several times each, and their bond is solid.

He was the first magus to pay enough attention to her, as a person, to learn that she was actually a smith, not just a big strong warrior; and he's promised her a chance, to put her real talents to good use, which she is eager for.

Appearance

A plain but voluptuous woman, well over 2 paces tall, with long pale-blond hair and ice-blue eyes. Though Dagny towers over many people, especially the diminutive magus she protects, she is a gentle soul, although she doesn't back down from anyone, sometimes not even when she should. She is reserved, even shy, and gets tongue-tied around people she doesn't know, but she is confident in her abilities as a warrior and a smith, and she is brave enough to go into battle against giants (which she has done) armed only with a spear and a shield.

Notes and details

Dagny and Gwyneth are both very close with Wolfgang, and to outward appearances the three of them sometimes appear too intimate, but this is a simple bond of friendship they share from their years spent together in various wild places. In fact, the two women are a couple, and while Wolfgang doesn't understand it, and it makes him a bit uncomfortable, he is very fond of both of them, in a platonic way, and happy to provide them with cover for their unconventional relationship.

Background

Gwyneth was born in the traveling covenant of Semitae, daughter of the turb captain. She was raised to fulfill two roles – an archer in defense of the covenant, and a crafter in times of peace, creating the equipment she and others wielded. As she grew up, the magi discovered that she had remarkable magical abilities, and there were high hopes that she had the gift, but it turned out that she didn't. For a while, one of the magi there studied her, wondering if some strange effect of traveling through auras had resulted in changes to her nature, but he discovered nothing. She's always been very curious about her abilities, and where they came from, and about the nature of magic itself, but she was surrounded by mysterious Criamon and secretive Verditius, so there were no magi willing to answer her questions.

Eventually, the legendary Hugh of Flambeau asked to borrow a few of Semitae's excellent archery-trained grogs, and after some unknown renumeration, he brought a few of them to Durenmar, to join the ill-fated Muspelli war, alongside a tiny magus named Wolfgang. She was at his side, and trapped with him for an entire winter, during which time they became good friends. She still finds him strange, but they've saved each others' lives several times each, and their bond is solid.

He was the first magus to be patient enough with her to answer all her questions about magic; and he's promised her that when they settle down in a covenant, he will make sure she is taught to read, and allowed to spend her free time in the library, which she is very excited about.

Appearance

A tall, lean, athletic woman, with long flame-red hair and deep green eyes. She is freckled, and pretty, but has a very intense energy, full of questions, and has a tendency to talk too quickly, and sometimes forget her manners, which puts people off.

Background

A former professional criminal covenfolk retainer of Rellantali. Benetto thus is city-raised and spent time as criminal and enforcer for the clandestine activities of the Covenant, a role in which he served with Vorsutus more than once giving him a long history with the Magus. Benetto was born greatly affected by his Goblin heritage and it is apparent to anyone who looks at him. He never had much of a chance at living a normal life and instead grew up raw on the streets of Venice before being recruited into the service of Rellantali. Perhaps this shared history and feeling regarding the Mundane World gives him a connection to the Blatant Gifted Magus Vorsutus that even the two of them do not know how to express in words.

Appearance

Appearance

Benetto is slender but deceptively athletic. His slight build containing both more strength than expected and being wielded with aggressive competence has surprised many would be opponents. Such hair as he has is patchy and thin and thus kept militaristically short. His eyes have slits, his teeth are sharp, and his voice is just slightly but noticeably unnatural. He keeps his nails carefully filed short lest they grow and begin to curve and sharpen. There is no mistaking him for anything other than goblin-touched. He dresses well, clean and practical for a man of his profession. Yet there is no trace of finery or upper class wear about him. Instead everything about his dress is purely functional, nondescript, and easily replaced.

Background

Background

A proud norse soldier and skald who wanted to join the varangian guard in Constantinople. Originally from Denmark Halfdan set out to make his fortune in Byzantium. Unfortunately he arrived in the city just in time for everything to fall apart. He doesn't therefore have a long history with Vorsutus instead being hired on initially to guard Thermakopolis by the Covenant. Yet he came to throw in his fate with the Magus over the course of the siege and sack of the city, the two having found some natural rapport. Vorsutus took an interest in him after hearing him muttering in Norse and both were glad to have someone to speak to in their native tongue. After that they slowly bonded over the course of the siege of Constantinople.

Appearance

Appearance

Halfdan is blonde, big, and handsome. And his bearing says he knows it. He dresses well, well enough to attend Court somewhere as a non-noble. He projects the air of a confident and educated man of the world, even if perhaps slightly above his station. Almost ever present with him is his Lyre, and he is prone to entertaining himself and others during any lull in activity by employing it to great effect. He wears his hair and beard long in the norse style but always well kept and braided to be both hygienic and out of the way for any actual combat.
