As I am taking over playing Julia, I am modifying her to take advantage of her now companion status (she was initially created at grog level). Therefore I am adding four virtues/flaws. In addition she is using transformation in Fall of 1220, adding a possible additional quality. I am hoping to get troupe input on the appropriateness of the following:

Given that her character archetype is seer and guide, I am looking at Intuition and Inspirational to round out those needs. I would like her to have Personal Vis Source to allow her to continue to grow, and am considering Independent Study for the same reason. Lastly I am considering Piercing Gaze or Strong Willed as being appropriate for her strong, but not combative personality.

I am leaning towards:

For flaws, I think both Visions and Compassionate (Major) are no brainers.

the two flaws to start sound right to me. Intuition and Inspiration also sound good, as long as Silveroak is comfortable with Inutition. PVS seems odd (veyr useful, but odd) for a magical creature.

For the flaws : Visions is good, altough it is similiar to Premonitions.

For the virtues I like Intuition and Inspirationnal as well. But I think student of the divine should be a virtue and not a magical quality. Also, I would like her to have one quality that help in the lab. I was thinking about inventive genius; maybe she feels intuitively feel ways where experimentation can lead. That would not be too out of character I think. Also something to facilitate her advancement, maybe apt student, as she is of the social kind, that would make sense for her to enjoy being taught to.

I disagree with Personnal Vis source. I think gaining vis through adventure is a hook for character; receiving a fixed amount kind of discourage that.

For an essential nature, crossing realms is a bad idea
I have no problem with a personal vis source.

I hardly see how a magical quality would grant anything to do with the divine. However, student of the divine could be granted as a divine virtue to a pious dove by the Divine.

Anyway, it would probably just best to scrap this quality.

I'm going to defer to JP on PVS. Also, re-reading the rules on companions gives us ten virtues/flaws, not seven (I think I'm showing my 3E roots, here). Moving some qualities over to virtues gives us:

She can have one story flaw (visions), two personality flaws with one major and one minor (Compassionate and Pious), and no more than five general flaws, so the last flaw needs to be a major, restricted to general and supernatural. Possibilities that fit her might be:

Essential Flaw
Hunger for (Vim) Magic (kind of an anti-PVS, guaranteed to get the pair out on adventures)
perhaps a creative Greater Malediction?

Alternately we can move three back to qualities and stick with 7/7.

JP - you may notice I did not add Inventive Genius in here; I think that while it's a good idea to help in the lab, IG does not describe Julia well. She will quickly learn Magic Theory at equal or greater levels to provide that bonus you are looking for, especially if she learns from Vulpus (combined SQ of 29, AND she can specialize in helping in the lab).

I disagree with your assessment on inventive genius. In this case, I do not see inventive genius in the classical sense, but more as her intuitive connection with magic (i.e. in the same vein as the premonition and intuition virtues), i, which I think fit the concept well.

That would enable her to still be somewhat helpful in the lab without having her to spend a lot of time learning about magic theory, after all she is not as scholarly as Vulpus or the other familiars can be.

In mechanical term, the goal was to keep her at a relatively low MT with the bonus of "intuitive" genius to somewhat counterweight that. If you prefer to have her with a high magical theory score, that will have the same effect. However, she will have to spend seasons after seasons strudying MT, time that could be spent develloping other aspect of the character.

In the end, I am not especially concerned by bonus coming from my familiar, otherwise I would not have made a familiar with exactly 0 MT at game start. So your call.

I do think it is inevitable that she will eventually get sucked into the scholarly atmosphere of the covenant familiars. She has No Fatigue and therefore has two extra seasons per year that will not be filled with adventure, and cannot benefit from exposure, practice, or training. Thus she will eventually fill her nighttime hours with reading, writing, teaching or learning. I do not necessarily see this as her essential nature, it's simply a matter of filling the time while Antonius is asleep.

Haven't gotten that far. It will depend on how many, if any, extra qualities we end up with.

Might points may be recovered as normal once the effect is withdrawn or expires.

Changelog:
The virtues were hashed out in the character thread with the troupe. Additional flaws were proposed but not commented on much, so I went with the ones I listed as favored. Abilities and characteristics were unchanged, taken directly from the prior thread (corrected a typo in characteristics).

Counting up the Qualities, I believe she was supposed to have a reduced might x10 all along, otherwise she would have a 15 might, not ten, and corresponding fewer qualities. Because I moved several qualities over to virtue category, she gained three minor qualities, two of which I invested in virtues.

  1. Strong Willed: I believe this fits her personality well without much explanation needed
  2. Voice of the (Air) – I think she should be able to speak with creatures of the air, as she is a bird. It has an additional effect of not being seen as a threat or as prey, which fits the peacemaking aspect of the dove
  3. Grant Puissance in (Etiquette): Same as above, really fits the peacemaker aspect of a dove by enhancing politeness and diplomacy. I like the idea of a skill granting power, but couldn’t think of anything else that really fit her personality, and would be useful (puissant theology might fit her background also, but it seems odd to grant puissance in an academic skill)

I get the intention behing grant etiquette. What do you think of a power that would do the equivalent of Calm the motion of the heart? (core book).

Also, I was reading RoP:M and I noticed that the size give more might, but that this increase in might doesnt give extra magical qualities (p.32). It seems everyone has done it, so we could house rule it or remove a few qualities from each familiar, depending on what silveroak wants.

Bound to magic: This could be problematic, as she is interested in the divine, but will probably never be able to leave magic auras.

Bound to magic is problematic for 2 other reasons- Antonius has traveled and there has not always been access to a magic aura of 5 or higher. Also it seems to me like this is doubling up on the trouble caused by acclimation, and that this flaw is really intended for characters without a might score.
Also you cannot have both premonitions and visions, as visions is a less reliable version of premonitions.

That sounds like a fine power. It costs 15 levels and the remaining 10 can be used to reduce the might cost to 1.

I believe you may be correct. I think I did Julia right, but I just checked Vulpus and he clocks in with two more qualities than he should have. I could easily balance those with a couple of inferiorities.

Ok, so we’re dropping both Visions and Bound to Magic. We can easily replace Visions with Restricted Power (minor, supernatural, must sing prior to use) on the Lesser Power: Peace of the Dove (basically Calm the Motion of the Heart, substituted from Grant Puissance in Etiquette).

That leaves us with one flaw, must be major, can be story, supernatural or general.

Any suggestions?

I have been treating the might modifier for size as an adjustment to the base might, allowing both the purchase of virtues and taking reduced might to offset it.

OK, I've finally decided on her last flaw - Essential Flaw (Major, General) (ROP:M) "Rose-Colored Glasses" Julia sees only the best in people and whenever making a Perception Roll, she is at a -6 to all rolls meant to discover deception, negative intent or similar.

Assuming this passes muster, I'll be updating the first posts with the final character sheet.

In addition, she will use her 7 vis gained from the Lab Incident for Transformation, aided by three confidence laundered through Vis mastery (10 vis required to attempt transformation). Unfortunately she rolled (10,4) and while she avoids a botch, she gains a mere ten experience for the season (aura 10 + die roll 0 = 10).

Ten xp is still enough to gain a single magical quality, Alluring to (Magical Beings)

this means in the aforementioned situations your perception score will be replaced with a -6, not just a -6 to rolls.
and it is approved.
