Lucas of Mercere - Development

So, just to confirm, WRT familiars:

1.) I start off with a beast, change it to a magical beast, then change it to a familiar, right?

2.) All Abilities need to be bought, with a minimum being the abilities a basic animal would have. All abilities must be appropriate to the animal type.

3.) Can I swap out the timing of my familiar binding, as requested above, so that I will have had more of an opportunity to train him?

4.) Future advancement must be associated with Lucas.

Dude, please tell me you are not a Bronie...

Okay, let's hope third time's a charm.

I started with the falcon from the Beasts supplement.

Then I altered it to be a magical beast.

CHANGES MADE TO MAKE INTO A MAGICAL BEAST

 • Change Cun to Int, and lose Ferocity
 • Swap Survival 3 (cold climates) for Survival 3 (mountainous climates) since it’s a peregrine falcon not a gyrfalcon
 • Add Magical Might of 10 –(-4) = 14
 • Add Improved Characteristics, Magical Animal, and True Friend (Lucas) Virtues
 • Add Magical Friend Flaw
 • Add Reduced Might (x4) and Susceptible to Deprivation Inferiorities
 • Add 15 Qualities (10 for Might and 5 for Inferiorities):
 1. Gift of Speech
 2. Improved Abilities
 3. Improved Attack (talons)

 • Add 425 points of Abilities (360 for Summer creature + 50 for Improved Abilities, +15 for leftover points from Improved Powers)
 • Add languages that the familiar gets for bonding with Lucas.

This leaves us with:

Hopefully I'm closing in on something that's looking like a proper familiar.

I have a ten year-old daughter and an eight year-old daughter. Like it or not, I've seen my fair share of My Little Pony.

and you love it, don't you?

The sad thing is that there are far, far worse things they can (and do) watch. I'd rather be forced to watch My Little Pony than Littlest Pet Shop Adventures - any day of the week.

As long as you refrain from creating a faerie blooded magus named Brony of Bjornaer, we're cool

My heartbeast is a pony with a cutiemark!

My condolences. My girls are ten and seven. I found that taking the oldest to see things like Hellboy and Iron Man in the theater kept her from getting too hooked on 'little kid' shows. It also meant I had a five-year-old girl laughing hysterically as Iron Man incinerated terrorists with a flamethrower, but you can't win them all. We were less proactive with the younger one and she's still a Sprout addict, though she's coming around to Parks & Rec.

My oldest never cared for movies until just this year. She had no desire to go see them. (Go figure!) Finally we're getting into a time when I can take her to see movies.

My ex was feeding the kids a steady died of Nick, Disney, and Iron-Curtain era Polish cartoons. Deciding they needed American culture the sort that I was raised on, I bought them a DVD full of classic Tom & Jerry cartoons. At first she thought it was too violent and that it would frighten them. But before long, it became their favorite.

Brohoof!

(I've watched every episode, most more than once, and that's including Equestria Girls. I have no kids nor an excuse...I just really like the show)

It's better written than a lot of what's out there.

It's like the old Animaniacs in that regard. Yeah, it's "target audience" is children, but there's enough stuff in there that only grown-ups would get so they can enjoy watching the shows with the kids. (I mean, really...how many seven-year-old girls would get Doctor Hooves and Rose running around in the background?)

My wife wouldn't believe me when I sang the Chicken Boo theme song and told her that it was a gag from Animaniacs. I had to find a clip on YouTube to convince her.

My gaming group is full of Bronies :unamused:

Okay, having found the Expanded Familiar Rules on the wiki, I've given it another shot using those rules. Any comments about what I may have gotten wrong are appreciated.

So how does it look? Good? Bad? Ugly?

Looks good, but I am worried about what you found as "Expanded Familar Rules". I do believe I prefaced that section with a statement that they are an experimental idea that cannot be used yet without troupe approval and guidance, and I know for fact that the section you refer to is unfinished. But it appears you made minimal use of it, and I am fine with where you are at. In fact, I am glad it worked so easily for you, and indeed I do want to conduct this experiment. Other players might throw a fit since they did not get a chance to approve or permit the use of these rules. And each Familiar Quality awakened requires a separate season I think, so you may be short on time. And your Virtues & Flaws do not balance. All PC's must balance. Only generic NPC critters may be off balance.

Marko, I think the reason the virtues and flaws don'te ven out is because he "bought" some of those virtues with Qualities. I didn't do the math, but I think that's where the disparity is. If that's the reason, then it shouldn't be an issue.

Beyond that, here are some more thoughts...

 1. I almost hate to point it out now, but I seem to remember that Lords of Men actually has stats for a Pergrine Falcon, so you might want to at least compare that to what you came up with.

 2. You have the "basic bird's" size listed as -3, but I think it's supposed to be -4, right? That's the size you seem to be using throughout the rest of process.

 3. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about the Familiar Qualities optional rules since, as Marko said, they've never been 'peer reviewed'. However, that doesn't really matter since the rules on the wiki state, “the concept of incorporating and/or altering Bond Qualities is restricted to Advanced Magic Theory, those magi possessing a score of 6 or higher.” As far as I can tell, Lucas’ Magic Theory is only 3, so he can’t use bond qualities anyway.

 4. I’m not sure what Magic Blood (Human) means. Does that mean that Horus has Magical Human Blood in him?

I didn't see anything there that said it was experimental. You might want to edit the Introduction to mention that.

Some of the Virtues were acquired as Qualities during creation of the Magical Beast (i.e., they were taken in lieu of Qualities). In particular, one of the Qualities you can take is "Minor Virtue".

Minor Virtue: The character gains a Minor Virtue, usually either General or Supernatural (Magic), to represent an advantage of its magical nature. Note that while this Quality may be taken more than once, only Virtues that allow a character to take them multiple times may be duplicated. Also, if a Virtue has requirements or restrictions on the characters that may take it, the magic character must meet them. For example, only a magic character with The Gift (or the Gifted Virtue described below) can take Hermetic Virtues.

Here's how the Virtues and Flaws map out:
