Lucien (Flambeau Apprentice Development)

Thinking of ways to work him in. Suggestions are welcome. Where is he now? Where could he be?

Some ideas:

  • he could still be at the orphanage in northern France. If so his living conditions are probably getting slowly worse as his gift manifests more and more.
  • with than manifestation of the gift should come some turbulence (expressions of magic). That won't help things even if he's not blamed. But he's likely to be blamed for at least some. Could related to Ignem but any Form really. Perhaps sometimes the good evens too.
  • when that starts he'd start knowing that at least part of what they say about him is true. Unnaturally different, and probably not in a good way. He still has a child's mind and thinks very simply about right and wrong.
  • Lucien would try to withdrawn from the direct confrontations and either hide or continue to study alone. He'd not back down if forced and would end the fight definitely when forced.
  • Lucien is smart enough to know that life at the abbey is too dangerous then he'd leave. It would have to be violent or life threatening though. The world outside isn't friendly either.
  • in preparation for that he starts to hide simple traveling items in a variety of caches outside the orphanage. Blankets, clothes, food. Probably started doing that even from a younger age, but now in earnest. He'll not take anything which is actually valuable. He's no thief.
  • but hiding the items might get him in trouble too.
  • if forced out he might look for work if given enough time to think. Anything using the fact he can read and do numbers a little.

Not quite home yet, but throwing an idea out from the airport. Solomon is planning to cast his "Cerebro" spell in Arans (hopefully finding Gabriel) and would detect Lucian as well if he is within the boundary of the city. Or, if there were rumors from somewhere else, he could always cast it there as well.

Since it has a range of AC, all he needs is a stone from the city he's casting on to detect those with the Gift.

Lucas still has friends in Cunfin, which is located at a monastery in central France. Maybe he heard something from the religious community there about an abbey up in norther France with a strange orphan in residence, perhaps even mutterings about him being a devil child - you know, just the sort of thing that makes magi think that there might be some of the Gift floating around. Knowing Carmen was looking for an apprentice, Lucas would have passed that knowledge on to her.

Correction. Carmen is not actually looking for an apprentice. But ot is a responsability she is willing to accept.
In other words, I don't see her going to Normandy any time soon, nor would she travel out of her way to pick some kid up that can be trained by someone where he already is.
I inquired about location because I imagined bumping into the kid somewhere. Cunfin works because magi are headed that way en route to Wadanzee. Cunfin is in France, so the kid could easilly be there randomly.

Then lets place Lucien on hold until it suits all the characters and players involved. Easy.

Please also let me know when the moratorium on new Magi is dropped, as I'd like to introduce a character into play.
I'll draft one when that ban is lifted, and it won't be a dependent/apprentice level.

There was never a ban. It was a moratorium, and it expired last week.
Also, I do suggest not placing Lucien on hold. the conditions you set forth will never occur. This saga is an example of organized chaos. I know, this troupe takes some getting used to. And I am the worst one .
Part of it is also my imagination of the setting, which is not the same as everyone and the group as a whole gets to contribute.
Anyway, it just does not seem realistic to me that anyone would range as far afield looking for an appentice, even actively looking. The cannon rate on gifted is one in ten-thousand. With the population of Mythic Europe being around a hundred million in the high middle ages, that means there are ten-thousand gifted individuals on the continent. The Order is only 15% of that number. Say a like amount are hedgies and such. That leaves seven thousand. Now even say only half are of appropriate age. That is still 3500 potential apprentices roaming about. So yeah, Rare. But not so very rare that anyone would travel half a continent to find one.
Long story short. I am looking for a logical reason for paths to cross "randomly". It isn't about me as a player. The character in question, Carmen, is easily distracted by immediate concerns and has not considered an apprentice. In character. She also has age issues and likes pretending she is young. She is over 50 and is upset that she appears thirty. Her mom is over seventy and looks 22. So yeah, age issues and not aware of her true place yet.

Work with me here

Ah, ok, I misunderstood what you were saying. I'm happy to say that the boy leaves the convent and travels in search of a safe haven (that was in the ideas blurb). I'll start mucking about with a Magus character as well as well.

Very possible that he comes either under the effect of the Cerebro spell, or that he travels within the purview of Andorra's surrounds. To look at it differently - once you're homeless you're not restricted on staying in the one spot, and you're certainly Ok with taking the odd small liberty to keep watered and fed.

I'm also happy that it doesn't start straight away - the other pbp game I'm playing in has a slow pace and that's ok by me.

IMO, the cerebro option is the best. It explains things nicely, and does reward Solomon's efforts.

That could segway nicely. The thing I said about it seening unlikely that someone would travel hundreds of miles to search for an apprentice? Solomon is the exception. He is looking for something specific and is willing to travel. He is inventing an item to help him locate the gifted, so it isn't random wandering afar.
Lucien is not what he is looking for. But the Mark I Cerebro (or is it Mark II?) is not discerning enough.

Finding this kid with the Blatant Gift, he may figure Carmen is best suited to teach him (she also has the Blatant Gift and could maybe teach him how to cope with it).

Works for me too. After travelling that far Lucien would be tired and probably living hand to mouth.
Might be stowed away somewhere, trying to think of his next move, or trying to find gainful work. He'd be frustrated by how badly people are reacting to him, as he's trying and wouldn't understand at all what is happening.
Assuming his location is found by Solomon; who actually would retrieve him? How do you want it to play out?

It's not actually an item, as it turns out a ritual can't be placed in an item. The "easiest" explanation would be that Lucien was in Andorra when Solomon casts Gifted Among the Masses, targeting Andorra. This way, he would detect both Gabriel and Lucien there. Not intent on teaching two apprentices, he'd mention to Carmen he'd found one with the Blatant Gift.

I'm not sure if you guys are following Gabriel's thread, but Solomon is planning to cast Gifted Among the Masses at the end of the Winter of 1239. I'm not sure how that fits into your timeline, but if that works, it would be the most plausible solution to finding Lucien.

Works for me. It means I'll start planning advancement from 1239.
Could Lucien join classes with the other students?

Start up a Story Thread and let's play it all out.
And Lucien ain't planning nothing. He will study what his Mistress tells him to study when she tells him to study it

I'm thinking about the Mythic Blood ability I originally wrote and would like to tweak it. "Fire in the Blood" currently a ReIg30 effect which grants short term +30 fire soak.
I'd like to alter than down a little to include a sub effect which also keeps Lucien warm. His blood runs hot and grants a small amount of protection from cold as well. Perhaps just natural cold.
I also am pondering having both powers constant.

Sounds okay to me. A guesstimate: start at 15 for soak +20, two mags for sun, one mag for both hot and cold, equals 30.
you will want a power that can be turned on and off in case you need to enter an area with (or touch a person with) magic resistance.

Darn good point on turning it on and off. I grabbed the guidelines from the wiki on wards for the level for protective personal wards.

Fire in the Blood (personal power)
Grants Lucien a +20 soak bonus to heat and cold, Sun duration.
(Base 4 for +5 soak, +3 to add 15 extra soak, +2 mag Sun, +1 mag for cold as well as heat, Personal, Individual)

We need to update Lucien's development. I have mentions of trainbing him all over my notes for Carmen and Roberto.

Will do. I’ll suss the advancement and post a version mid-apprenticeship
