Failure reduces the sand into a block of useless material as if an incompetent beginner had worked on it. This spell has an Ignem requisite because of the heat required for the process. [This is similar to The Invisible Glass-Worker for glass making. The main differences are the Ig requisite, the change to Group target, and the change to Voice range.]

Background
Back in the days of the Ancient Greeks, when gods walked the earth, Zeus fell in love with a beautiful maiden. In order to hide their love from Hera, Zeus granted the maiden the ability to become an owl and taught her some of the hidden ways in the clouds that they could use to see each other. This plan worked very well, and Hera was never the wiser about their relationship. But it was still doomed - not by Hera's jealousy, but by Zeus' fickleness. In time, he tired of the maiden and moved on, leaving her devastated. She vowed never to have a human lover ever again, and became an owl one last time, remaining in that form for the rest of her days.

But while she had no human lover, she did eventually mate with a wise owl of virtue, having several owl children. And as her family grew, she found that they had all inherited her abilities to some extent. From their father they got wisdom; but from her they received the ability to speak to humans and sometimes the ability to change into humans. Over time her bloodline spread throughout parts of Greece and sometimes even farther afield. For the maiden remembered the byways in the clouds that Zeus had shown her. And she passed this knowledge down to some of her children, who did so to their children down the line.

Sophia is one of the descendants of the maiden and the wise owl. She has proven to have their blood flowing strong within her veins, having both great wisdom and the ability to change into a human. She has also been told the secret of the god's highway. She used these pathways to explore parts of the world, blending into human society and learning many of its ways. But always she had toreturn to a place of magic power. For without such power to sustain her, she knew that she would gradually fade away forever. So despite her love of the human world, all she could get was glimpses of it before she had to return to her home.

All that changed when she was visiting the great Forest of the Rhine. There she met a man who captivated her. Magnus was wise and intelligent, and everything she might want in a mate. But she knew any relationship between them was doomed since she could never stay with him. Still, she couldn't help herself from falling in love with him ove the course of the next month. So it was with a heavy heart that she finally told Magnus she must leave him. She had intended to leave with few words, but couldn't help herself from telling all to him, including that she was only partly human and partly an owl of virtue.

Magnus thought the matter over and declared that he could free Sophia of her need to stay in an area of magic if she would agree to become bound with him. If they did so, the bond between them would sustain her and she would be free forever. Happy to have both freedom and magnus both, Sophia agreed immediately. Soon thereafter she became Magnus' familiar.
